OK guys and gals

I have an R32 GTR with a twin plate clutch that is in need of repair / replace. It has not started to slip yet, but I get some serious groaning sounds when at the balance point, and the clutch only needs to be pressed about an inch for it to disengage (which I understand can be adjusted – yes ?)

So ..... I have a few questions.

I do not know the make/model of the current twin plate as it was in the car when I got it just over 2 years ago.

1: It's an '89 R32 GTR – so how do I find out if it's a push or pull. Could it have been converted. (apologies in advance if this is a silly question :D)

2: Should I reco the exiting twin plate or replace it with a conventional single plate clutch. The car is a daily driver – currently seeing about 300awkw.

My current thinking is to swap over to a single plate to make the car a little easier in traffic (as long as it can take the stress) and sell the twin plate on the forum.

I'm open to suggestions and recommendations here pps

1. more than likely it's push. but it's easy to check, just get down on the ground and have a peak at the slave set-up. see if it's push or pull.

2. depends if you are happy with the current clutch. if not, then search out something else. if you are then a rebuild may be the go.

thanks BB

just checked - the slave cylinder seems to be a push type to me

I am happy with the current clutch - but if I can get a better fly / clutch / presure plate setup for the same cost as a rebuild - I'd consider it

I'm guessing that a rebuild should be around the $1200 mark - is that a fair guess ?

well if it's OS Giken and the flywheel is ok, and the diaphragm is ok, and the bearing is ok, then you just need:

pressure plate disc

sandwhich plate

2 X clutch plates

new bolts

cost will be around $1K and you can "rebuild" it yourself. Just pull it appart, and re-asemble in the same order it came appart.

seems like a lot of IFs in that post

how difficult is it to remove the g-box ?

If I get my mechanic to do it - how many hours ?

Edited by itbmils

remove and replace gearbox, inlcuding replace clutch probably about $400. could be as low as $300 and as high as $600 depending on where you go, and what they charge.

Silly question, sort of, but if you have a traditional rattling twin plate and have it recoed is it possible for it to be modified so as to do away with the rattle?

I wouldnt think so..

whats wrong with the rattle?

im in exactly the same boat as itbmils

say we dont rebuild the twin....would say, an xtreme 5/6 puck ceramic be able to hold 300-320rwkw if limiter launches were to be avoided and not overly ridden?

I just spoke to Xtreme. They advise to use the XTRA XTRA HEAVY DUTY DSB clutch range which should support up to 350-400 rwkw on a GTR.

For my late 93 R32 GTR (pull type) Im considering the KNI25003DSBXXHD kit. Its a 6-button carbotic clutch with about 1500kg clamp pressure.

Should be very street drivable and should take the punishment of circuit racing and the occasional rev-limiter launch. They reccommend 'solid centre' clutches for constant drag racing and high rev launches. DSB range is a good compromise for street/track!

I was quoted $1500 by Jim Berry to rebuild a Nismo twin, for that price id just buy a new one and throw the old one away :)

I am in need of a new clutch an a Nismo Supercopper Twin is what I am after.

$1650ish from Perfect Run, not delivered. $1850ish delivered from Nengun.

Then $400-$600 fitted you say?

I need a new one aswel!

Hows the timing ?!

Anyway.....the ones im looking at are:

Nismo twin from Nengun

http://www.nengun.com/catalogue/product/509

Nismo twin from perfectrun

http://www.perfectrun.com.au/performance%2...ppermixTwin.htm

For early ones though there are 2 choices:

670ps 9807 (1000kg)spring rate 3002A-RS594 ¥150700 Only for push type cluch

Standard spec

740ps 10787 (1100kg)spring rate 3002A-RR593-C ¥162900 Only for push type cluch

Competition spec

Now the 670 one would be the quiet one, and the 740 would be the rattler ( AFAIK ). The rattling doesnt bother me, but if the street spec one will do then that will be the one to go for ;)

Also, perfect run have this page

http://www.perfectrun.com.au/ordering/freight_list.htm

...which shows shipping costs, unlike nengun who of course do it for you

I have considered all the other twins out there, but the nismo ones have the best reputation from the people ive spoken to about them. The next one in line would be an OSGiken twin - but without trying for a discount from anywhere, have a look here:

http://www.otomoto.com.au/osgiken/str_twin_plate.htm

I guess the wholesale would be around the same as a nismo twin delivered ;)

When do you need your clutch by if you dont mind me asking?

Why you wanna split freight?!. I can put up with mine for a while, its still bites pretty good so its drivable. I need to pay off my suspension first anyway. But before that is Christmas ......ah, I need so much money right now!

Mine is an August '93 model so I need the pull type standard 3002B-RS599

    • Wow the colour matched hard top completely transforms the car. Are there any nice front lip options for the car or is that off the table?
    • Generally yes but for some reason I've been ruthless this time around!  I might even need to do another tip run after the way I've finally been able to hit the delete button on shit I've stepped over, stepped around and tripped over for the past 10 years!

    • More than happy with the colour match Talking to the painter he recommended to give the top a few weeks for the paint to 100% cure prior to sealing it with the ceramic stuff Also, because why not..... I have a fancy pants Fluidampr harmonic balancer on order, the 2.5 engine uses the OEM 2.0 balancer off the old motor as the 2.5 balancer is a larger unit and doesn't fit clearance wise, which, because the two engines have different harmonics, isn't optimal, the OEM balancer does the job, but as the gear driven balancer in the bottom end is removed to fit a RWD application there is slightly more vibration, the Fluidampr helps with the harmonics that the gear driven balancer once took care of,  basically makes life easier on the oil pump and bearings when thrashing it around Hopefully the weather gets better soon because I'm keen for some cruising around, and currently, with the winds and storms we are getting, the amount of detritus being blown around from trees on the road isn't something I want to be driving around in
