Hello all,

Well i've been searching and learning what to look out for when getting an R32GTR. I've just got two small questions: -In one of the threads i noted that the "earlier GTR's had oil probs due to crank collar design". My question is -how early are we talking? Was it just with the 89 models? The one i got my eye on is a 90 model...

Also, as i've never actually felt it before -so wats the tell-tale sign the gearbox synchros are on their way out? Im presuming its just a bit hard to find the gear????

...feedback appreciated :P

A 1990 model has the same oil pump drive as an 89. They are fine unless you habitually launch the car from 6000rpm+. Then they tend to break. They were revised in about 93. There is no actual difference in the oil delivery between the two pumps.

You will hear a synchro graunch as much as feel it. It feels like two gears grinding against each other, which oddly enough, it is. You will still probably get it in gear.

not sure about your oil problem question wouldnt mind to know myself cause ive got a 90 model

with the syncros my old box was losing them and i only noticed it when doing high rpm/quick gear changes just ground the teeth a little bit and needed slightly more force to put into gear at these times

other than that changed fine thats the tell tale sign as far as i know

Don't rush into buying an R32 GTR especially if importing. Most R32 GTR buyers now will look at late 93 - 94 Vspec models with minimal mods. If there is no service history you may need to change a few things like water pump, timing belt and the crank collar ike you say.

My gears are always a bit tough to grab when cold (especially 1st) and 5th always grinds if I just gave it a bit of stick in 4th, but its ok if I hold the clutch for a few seconds and slowly engage 5th.

The oil collar was updated on late 1994 models. Earlier models all had the 'design flaw'.

Not quite correct. I have seen a number of motors where the oil pump drive has completely rounded off on the corners. Its just daily wear and tear and it does happen without continually launching the car.

early GTR's didn't have "oil probs due to crank collar design". The crank collar is a weakness if the car is bounced off the harsh factory rev limiter too much it can break and then there's no drive to the oil pump - which means one stuffed engine (not to mention two turbos). if its not broken, there are no problems caused by the crank collar design, and if you stay off the rev limiter there's no reason to expect any problems. AFAIK all R32's have the same crank collar oil pump drive except for the uprated N1 version.

all GTR's have oil problems with running at constant high rpm (ie track work) with too much oil supply to the overhead parts. you will be able to find heaps of info about this posted by SK.

and all are suspect for oil surge during track work. some say even a hard launch on the street can cause oil surge! common advice to prevent this is to use an extral litre of oil.

obviously if the engine ever comes out (ie to change turbos), it would be money well spent to fit the N1 oil pump and drive and a sump baffle kit. otherwise, be careful to stay off the rev limiter and use an extra litre of oil.

So does that mean that my current 1993 R33 GTST has this "design flaw"????

Yep, i've definately seen this in many threads on the forums....

Thanks for the info pplz.

The GTR's i got my eye on are already in Melb which will give me the advantage of getting a compression test and leak down test just before purchase. Although i will loose a few $$$ buying one that's already landed as compared to importing myself, i think its worth it if it insures i dont get a dud.
