hey guys, my RB30DET needs the valve springs changed but its too hard for me to do so i want to pay for someone to do them but none of the well known/big workshops wanna do it due to the fiddliness of it. so i'm looking for a small workshop perhaps, reasonably close to metro adelaide that you persoannly would recommend/let work on your car and wouldn't mind a small challenge.

cheers in advance, Ash!

by the way don't tell me to rip the head off and do them cause i really don't wanna and i've already asked Shaun @ boostworx and he said he wouldn't do it!

I too have rung around all the major Adelaide workshops and they don't want a bar of it.

Rip the head off they say. If you find some one to do it, my plans may change.

heheh don't want to give it a shot yourself after the cam gear install????

Chris Milton Engineering are the blokes who did the work on my head.

They too said to rip the head off. They only wanted $100 to fit the springs up but wouldn't touch it with the head on the car.

Reason being.. A custom tool is required to be made and really doing the springs on these heads is a pain in the arse.

I'll probably end up ripping the head off and have them do a valve grind while its there, its done almost 45,000km's so it could do with one.

pity his workshop is far from reasonably close to metro adelaide :)

Some maps say Gawler is metro. Most say Munno Para is metro so Gawler is "close". :)

Personally being non metro is fine by me :) Means i can get my car in whenever i want!

could give Dave from The Motor Shop a try

i did work experiance with him many many many ma.. well u get the picture

ye, if i can't even get that right who knows what i'd do trying to install these.

Should offer Andrew (sky30) $100 to do them seeing as he's done them before! hehe!

rang motor shop and john moyle race engines, both said they wouldn't even want to attempt it so i then rang rhemac and they said ye we'll give it a go but i wouldn't get much change from $800 (i don't think so). mmmmmmmmmm dunno what to do!

lol @ $800.

Bugger that.

As that horrid saying goes Ash.. Suck and see.

Push the boost in to it and see how she goes. Your springs have been shimmed up where as sky30 and my won weren't.

Bl4ck32 has had no issues on 16psi with his spring shimmed.

So give it a go. :ninja:

Shaun shouldn't charge much for a retune on more boost as it should only take two hrs including cam gears.

As much as you don't want to hear it, if the shops won't touch it without the head off, then I sure as heck wouldn't be trying it myself.

It sucks to have to take the head off, but if you break a spring and do further damage the cash it would have cost you to fix might seem like chicken feed.

If I remember your dyno graph, you should be right to try and save some cash up, as it only looked like a problem right up top (which is not surprising for valve springs).

If you do end up having to take the head off though, I know I'm the sort of person who couldn't put it back on without some tickling.

I know I hate it when the two choices that I have are ones that I think both suck - "she'll be right" or "big cash bummer".

lol thats my problem. I've already had the head cleaned up with valve deshroud and mild in/exh porting, I wouldn't mind doing a little more work to the exh. side of things. :)

Was that price from Rhemacs to re skim the head as well? They do tend to be more expencive but i've always found they do more as well, they don't do things by halves. The price probably included all new gaskets and seals etc. add labour onto that and it's probably not too bad.

All though Ash asked for valve springs to be done without the head coming off the $800 price is probably to cover incase they had to rip the head off. ;)

It is fairly pricey. Definitely worth the work doing mine myself. Miltons only want to charge me $100 to fit valve springs up so I'll have them do it + throw a different set of cams in and maybe a little more work to the heads exh. side. Hell its all apart anyway.

I'm happy with the head work Miltons did on mine last time, there was a noticeable difference before and after by just feeling around, and the main thing. The economy is pretty damn good being close to what the rb20det used to get. I was a tad worred about porting etc as I had heard a few horror story's of it buggering up economy. ;)

    • Good morning all, Bit of a random question but figured I’d finally throw it out after wondering for a long while. Before I start, I'm hoping to do this purely out of personal preference. I think it would look better at night, and don't mind at all spending a few hours and dollars to get it done. I've copied this from a non-Skyline specific forum, so I apologize for the explanation of our headlight switch setup that we all know. Here we go: Zero lights (switch off) Parking lights (switch position 1) being a rectangular marker on the outside of the housing, my low beam being the projector in the centre (position 2), and a high beam triggered by my turn signal stalk. Most North American cars I’ve owned of this era have power to the amber corner (turning indicator) light as part of the first switch (parking lights). I’d love to have these amber corners receive power when the headlights and parking lights are on (headlight switch), yet still blink when using the turn signal which is of course a separate switch. Hopefully I’ve explained my question correctly. Is anyone aware of a way in which I might be able to achieve this? Thanks in advance
    • My heads are cathedral port! It's likely possible, but I don't want to add any extra moving parts (I know they don't move) between the heads, manifolds, etc. It will also affect how injectors/fuel rails etc sit and I don't really know if it would change how the FAST manifold goes/sits/fits. I have the LS6 steam pipes already as I have a very late LS1 block so it should be fine. I couldn't find anyone who had ever actually used one for this purpose, it seems 100% of people grind the water pump. The thermal spacers are 12mm and are half way to the cost of the newer water pump anyhow... so if it comes to that I suppose I'd rather buy a new pump. The bearing in the pump I do have is a little.. clunky, but it hasn't done that much time and I never noticed it when the car was together in the past few years, so..
    • The bushing has failed, not all that uncommon for a car of this age.  Any mechanic should be able to push in a new bushing for you, or you can probably buy the entire lower control arm, complete with bushes.
    • Could you not use "thermal" spacers to give the clearance, like the ones I used between the blower and head? That raised the manifold height by around 10-15mm Albeit the ones I used were for cathedral ports, but I assume they have similar for rectangular ports????
    • Thanks Paul I reached out to Autotainment but they no longer work on JDM cars as the guy who used to do the work moved on and is no longer doing that kind of work. I am talking with Level Up Audio though.
