It's about as close as most people can get to doing a defensive driving course in their owns cars unfortunately :) Damn govt cardigans, give us back our skidpan!

this was my point exactly

less and less places you can actually do a "defensive driving course" in your own car

afaik there's one left and that's queensland raceway, but how do you expect to get skills up by practicing once in a blue moon when you can afford the stupid amounts of money

hey now this has all been brought up, people keep saying burnouts should be kept for the track. Does that mean for example the track day on the 25th, if i wanted to i could bring my stockos and do a smoke show & donuts in the middle of the track while everyone else is off the track watching or atleast at a safe distance? Or would that be frowned upon as well becuase its using up precious track time? Dont mean to be controversal just seeing if you really do save it for the track or just use that as an expression.

Track days dont really have time for skids but a few people have let a couple go...

Plus you can do as big a burnout as you want once you have left pit lane... To warm up them tyres of course... :whistling:

isnt there a place to do burnouts though? around drag strips?

Best place to let loose with skids is at willowbank drag strip... You can do as big or as little as you like, just dont take too much time cause they will wave you on...

Ok... this is quite funny some of this.

Burn-outs. Burn-out comps are best. My mate got 1st prize with his efforts the other day out at archifield = $220 some oil and free entry next time.... in his dunga v8 commo, if he wins 3 more times he would have made money on the car! But there are HEAPS of them about, you just need to look. That and willowbank before you have a run.

Advanced defencive driving courses... There are HEAPS again. If your cars exaust is legal (ie less that 90db at 4000rpm) then you can do them anywhere. Mt Cotton run them with a few places, but due to my wanting a free plug SDT is the only one I'll recomend. They use the LMVA and the skidpan, as its an actual COURSE its ok... It is done in your own car, and if they know you have been a few times before they change the LMVA things to mix it up a bit and make it more fun.

Advanced race courses are a little more limited, but once again QLD raceway, and Morgan Park. Hopefully after Chrissy Mt Cotton will see the light with SDTs drift school and that will with any luck re-open. That and Paul always says with his track days there are a few people with the skills to help out with people driving.

They are all held resonably reguaraly. The cost can be a bit prohibitive, but it is controlled conditions, your more likely to have some form of insurance (I know shannons do as it was one of the reasons I went with them), you have someone to show you what to do if you keep stuffing it up. And its safe, from crashing and cops... and your car wont be impounded. So when you weight it up it aint that bad!

My thoughts anyway.

now you mention mt. cotton as a defensive driving school, but "drifting" is banned there, and i don't see ANY of that changing on the horizon

the cops and the council are shutting down most places where it was acceptable before

i'm sorry but defensive driving courses that don't include regaining control of a car that isnt in control, are a waste of time, money, and intelligence

any moron can put their foot on the centre pedal

LOL! I could reply two ways. But dude, I do this every weekend, and its the same thing every time. Trust me a lot of people who think they can drive cant. Yeah anyone can put their foot on a brake. Just 90% of people cant do it very well or with any thought in an emergency. You dont want to make people think they are bullet proof, we have had people do the advanced course with much the same additude as you, then they realised they should go do the basic one, to learn the basic skills properly.

The whole 'drift school' thing... Joel has between now and christmas a booking at mt cotton and willowbank almost every day of the week. So creating ripples with Mt Cotton now is a REALLY bad thing. Trust me something will happen in regards to that. If Mt Cotton say no, then SDT will make their own skidpan most likely at willowbank with limited noise restrictions.

The only place I have ever known drifting to be done legally in qld is QLD raceway and occasionally at indy etc. So councils have shut down nothing.

Also Mt Cotton is a training center which companies hire out off the qld govt. So different schools/companies have different uses for it, with different courses.

i could take that one of two ways, and i'm taking that as a threat

last i heard, mt cotton drift school was shut down, and any form of drifting was banned due to noise complaints, i'm sure quite a few other people have heard this too

you're being a little overzealous no?

Ahh, no. It means if Joel starts legal precedings or whatever with them they could potentially tell him to get stuffed on all his bookings he already has... Which has the snow ball affect of no income, ie no money to fight back, and no money to build his own.

All Im simply saying is your trying to justify your want to do illegal and potentially dangerous activitys without doing any proper research to find out what is actually out there for you to do.

I also love your 1 line quote.

i've done a advanced driving course at mount cotton & it was great. It has got me out of trouble a few times. It's not just about preventing you from doing something stupid but largly about avoiding an incident when someone else does something stupid. If someone cuts you off or is about to hit you, you learn to react quickly in a safe matter to get out of the danger area.

    • Realized I haven't been back here in a while. Still here, still alive, still waiting for the car.  I went back again the only time last year from Oct-Nov for R's Meeting and drove it around some more, including a few laps on Fuji Speedway(in the wet, sadly). The car still feels good, but have a couple small things to address. I've been getting more parts but have slowed down still, and most of the bigger purchases are now out of the way. I find myself getting impatient more and more when it comes to getting started on this project; it's quite hard for me not being able to really dive in and start making this car my own because it's halfway across the world. At times it doesn't even really feel like I own one of these. Haven't really been motivated or had the desire to document the last trip on here or social media for, well, reasons... but here's some pics...it's also still alive and well as you can see: I've narrowed down to the last large part purchases(anything over $2k) before the engine build to be: 1) Ohlins Road & Tracks 2) ATS Twin Carbon clutch 3) Endless BBK with some custom options and 4) Kansai Service carbon driveshaft I don't think the budget exists for all of these this year, but I'll try for one or two items I think. Though, every time I look at my spreadsheet I sigh, shake my head, and get depressed just that little bit more.  'til later.
    • It's a stunning location!  I've been to NZ twice but haven't made it to the North Island yet.  Definitely on the cards but the South Island is hard to tear yourself away from too... Looking forward to see what you can wring out of it once you can get it to hold together!  Be awesome to get a low 11 or even sneaking into the high 10's pass out of it.  That's a bloody quick car that most people will never experience in their life.  Enjoy!
    • Nominally yes but I’m not really at that stage yet. Outsourcing to Japan is also a relatively good deal at the moment because their currency has devalued much more against the USD.  You would assume this but a lot has changed from the pandemic. Mechanics are in short supply and demand for fixing old cars has gone up from the cost of new cars. 250-300 USD/hr is not an unusual shop labor rate in California and you’re paying that regardless of whether the guy is competent or not. Coworkers have been quoted 3000 USD for a water pump and thermostat at a dealer on an N54. Oil changes went from ~75 USD to 150 on fairly normal cars like Civics. The cost of the oil and filter hasn’t even kept up with inflation.
    • The downside to that is that the cost of everything, particularly labour, is significantly higher here than it is over there in the Disunited States of Slavery. You can hire 3 tradesmen over there for just the Ranger Raptor allowance of a single 3rd year apprentice over here.
    • Shit. Starting to look like a car again.
