Hiyas

Im looking at buying a new turbo off another dood, just wondering if you guys could offer some advice/info on it for me.

heres some details...

Specs:

Oil cooled

Front A/R: .50

Front blade: 57mm!

Front housing: T04B

Rear A/R: .58

Rear wheel: T3 with cut back blades.

This turbo will be coming of a Mitsubishi VR-4 that weighs 1600kg (boat!) and has dynoed 250kw at all fours and has run 12.2. It has T3 flange so will bolt up to RB20/25 stock manifold and SR/CA with adaptor plate. This turbo should make well over 250rwkw on these motors.

Will i have any problems physically fitting it in there, and im guessing i will probably need another dump pipe made up? are the specs any good?

All I know is it *should* be a pretty easy swap into my engine, is there anything I should be aware of.

Current mods are custom FMIC, 3" exhaust/dump, pod with cold air, brass button clutch, 11psi. How much of a gain should I notice just running the same boost with this new turbo?

Will the fuel pump/injectors be able to handle this..

sorry for all the questions, i just dont want nasty suprises when I get it :D

thanks in advance.

you will need a bigger fuyel pump at least and a s-afc its not as simple as bolting on a new turbo for more power. you could possibly need bigger injectors. got to my web site and read the article on modifications and get the turbo fitted and tuned buy some one who knows what they are doing as it wont be straight forward as it came off a different type of car.

This turbo sounds pretty serious. I read this thread but thought the turbo may be a little too big for my liking.

With this power you will need at least the following mods:

-Some kind of engine management, i personally feel that a s-afc will not be safe for you engine when making this power.

-550cc injectors

-Larger fuel pump

-fuel regulator

-External waste gate(no mention of it in the thread)

-Maybe a oil/air seperator (due to the high boost required)

NOTES:

-11psi of boost is not sufficant to get that power, ask seller how much psi was required to acheive 250kw at all 4 wheels, and if the car was running pump fuel on the dyno run.

-There is alot of things involved to acheive this power.

-Boost may not hit till at least 4K rpm (if not higher), can you live with this lag?

I am not trying to turn you off, just informing you of what little i know. Lately i too have been considering a turbo upgrade, so i have done some research. Infact i have very recently posted up a thread about building an RB25DETT (twin turbo setup) to see if i can acheive 280-320rwkw with less lag than a 600hp turbo.

Hope all goes well!!

Alan

Thanks for your input Al

Yeah I think I might leave the turbo upgrade till I at least get a new fuel pump and fuel regulator, maybe a chip of some sort. I already have a catch can.

I wasnt expecting to make that sort of power/time with my current mods anyway, just thought a turbo upgrade would be a nice step.

    • It's something we all have to consider as time marches on. Also consider lifted rally MX5 conversion at that point.
    • I should be fine for a few more years, whilst I do have arthritis I also exercise and do mobility training every day to keep as fit and healthy as I can, military life, which is the actual cause of most of my joint issues, has set daily regimes, which I weirdly enjoy I also train alot smarter now, not really focusing on lots strength or puffy muscles, I'm more focused on maintaining what I have for my future older self, I actually train as much mobility now as I do exercising Check out this "simple" drill I have been doing daily prior to training now for a while now, this has worked wonders in my all round mobility
    • I'd say one thing that may make you sell is the same reason the guy with the hard top roof sold his. He got old, and his back was giving him too much grief stopping him getting in and out... Old guy said he was 73! He looked and sounded younger than 73 to me! Or maybe I'm just aligning with old people more...
    • Already looked at a few prior to getting the MX5, really nice car, had all the mod cons, but I wasn't really sold on the new "look" I did miss my 2017 Limited, and I personally prefer the "look" of the older car over the new model, but, when pondering I kept going back looking at MX5's But it was same same for the new ND's, I wasn't sold on the new "look", especially the RF with its weird roof, which only half goes down, like a targa top sort of thing As I stated before, I did look at NC's, but the cars I looked at were PRHT's, but I didn't like their roof line "look" of the PRHT, until I saw the soft top version, (someone on SAU posted a for sale ad for one with a soft top that caught my attention, you can blame them for my choice.....🤣) and.... that old style detachable hard tops were available for them, which keeps the old MX5 more smoother flowing roof line, and the more rounded body style, similar to the NA-NB, to me, the arse end of the ND looks to "modern" Much like how I prefer the NC1 front bar, over the later models How long will I keep this car for is unknown, but currently, there's nothing else out there that "floats my boat" for a small, fun, little "sports car", that I can play with and enjoy looking at and driving But, who knows what the future holds, and going off current new car styling, if I replace it, it will be a older model something something
