Hey all,

well over the weekend my car has been playing up, it kinda feels like its totally loosing ignition for a second or so, ill be accelerating and the car will just die and slow for a sec then pickup back to normal.. only happened a few times but getting worse each time. Im thinking the main coil box thing that sits ontop of the coil cover might be on its way out....

Kinda started happening when i washed my engine bay a week or so ago, it was missing for a couple of min until the water in the coil crevace dried out, the it would have an intermittant missfire under load, i had "Knock Sensor 46" error code come up a few times in that night but hasnt been up since....

thats my issues, dont know if its related but its really worrying me that the car will die on the harbour bridge/tunnel in peak hour traffic....

The fuel pump was done 2 yrs ago to a bosch, plugs are 40tho old, 2 years on them too..... ive been told that it might be the plugs, but i dont know..

So whats your theory?

Plugs?

Coils?

Something ignition related?

Some sensor on its way out?

anything?

Anyone have an rb20 coil thingo that i can borrow in sydney to try it out briefly?

Thanks all

would the plugs all cut out at the same time to make the car lose power like that?

Normally not a problem when i wash the engine, i wont anymore though...

did the alternator earlier in the year, had battery light come on and car lost power in a similar way but not on/off like it is now.....

doodz and i took the sparkies out thisavo, they look ok, coils look fine, put it all back together and got error codes,

ignition

and

air flow meter...

farken cars, still doing the surging too....

FARK!

UPDATE

Serviced the car etc etc, runs alot better, but is now idiling on 1000rpm, with a missfire (always had a slight one) and if the revs go any lower then it missfires like shit, barely runs kinda thing.... im stumped now, im thinking possibly injectors? it is lacking a bit up top too....

thanks

Upping the idle is a cheap way to get around the problem I suppose.

It does very much sound like a AFM. A bloke I know with an r32 had problems with his car dying on the road, we suggested giving the AFM a hit with his hand which promptly stalled his car (once you get breaks in them little hotwires - its goodnight). He has replaced it now, and everything is running like a dream.

Only way your going to really tell, is if you start checking signals returning from AFM's and by measuring your injector pulse width. If the coolant temp sensor is borked, your car will be running rich the start with and foul your plugs - which unburnt fuel will kill your O2 sensor and your cat.

Cheers

I didnt up the idle, the car did it by itself, the sounds of it at the moment it sounds like one of the cocils has totally died, or isnt flowing enough amps on idle to get a good spark hence the missfire.

Swapped my afm with another one and same problem, swapped ignitor pack same problem.

Thinking it could possibly be the O2 sensor which ill check this weekend, along with cat.... ill try taking my coils out one by one and swapping them to see which one is faulty, along with the wiring.... Coolant temp sensors are ok, one on dash works fine, and my ECUTALK© from one of the members on here works off the diagnostic port and reads coolant temp so both the sensors are fine..

So got it down to

Coils

a sensor of some sort

i doubt its the injectors but it could possibly be

im still a bit unsure about afm, all looks ok but that will be a last resort again if everything else is fuxord

Atleast the surging has stopped, that was a really scary thing to happen in peak hour traffic, kinda a "when is the car guna not run at all" moment

thanks for your help guys, ill let ya know ppl

Same thing is happening with my car.. it happened after i washed my engine bay aswell, unlike normal rb25's my egines top has breather slots i wreckon maybe water could of gone in there.. does anyone wreckon it might be from the fuel pump? like probly for a sec not enouf fuel going in? ill have to take it to autoking and get them to check it out.. Let me know if you do find the problem though

    • Not sure the US can import anything other than the C34 Stagea's, but if you can and you need to to tow, DO NOT under any circumstances get an M35 Stagea. If it is just as a family car and your country/state allows it, absolutely and definitely get an M35 (3.5L if possible as it is effectively a 350Z) over a C34.
    • Punch your VIN (nm35-xxxxxx) into Amayama.com You can see everything there quite easily.
    • Thanks for that, I'll check it all out. I can always do the brakes last anyway if its a problem.  The 16's are super cool, if they do fit I'll cruise around with them for a bit.
    • Well, that's kinda the point. The calipers might interfere with the inside of the barrels 16" rims are only about 14" inside the barrels, which is ~350mm, and 334mm rotors only leave about 8mm outboard for the caliper before you get to 350, And.... that;s not gunna be enough. If the rims have a larger ID than that, you might sneak it in. I'd be putting a measuring stick inside the wheel and eyeballing the extra required for the caliper outboard of the rotor before committing to bolting it all on.
    • OK, so again it has been a bit of a break but it was around researching what had been done since I didn't have access to Neil's records and not everything is obvious without pulling stuff apart. Happily the guy who assembled the engine had kept reasonable records, so we now know the final spec is: Bottom end: Standard block and crank Ross 86.5mm forgies, 9:1 compression Spool forged rods Standard main bolts Oil pump Spool billet gears in standard housing Aeroflow extended and baffled sump Head Freshly rebuilt standard head with new 80lb valve springs Mild porting/port match Head oil feed restrictor VCT disabled Tighe 805C reground cams (255 duration, 8.93 lift)  Adjustable cam gears on inlet/exhaust Standard head bolts, gasket not confirmed but assumed MLS External 555cc Nismo injectors Z32 AFM Bosch 023 Intank fuel pump Garret 2871 (factory housings and manifold) Hypertune FFP plenum with standard throttle   Time to book in a trip to Unigroup
