Just like the "Japanese Resturants In Melbourne?" thread, what are people's recommendations for Jap restaurants in Sydney?

I'm looking for nothing too expensive.

I've had Sushi-Ya in Chatswood/Artarmon.

Tetsuya

Rengaya

The one on York Street opp QVB (next to adult book store)

Totoya in Neutral Bay

Kenta in Neutral Bay

Some small one in Chatswood past Crystal Car wash on the corner

All are very nice in my opinion; prices do vary though - especially if you go to Tetsuya

Thanks Stan

The "Some small one in Chatswood past Crystal Car wash on the corner" is Sushi-Ya

Makoto is more a sushi-train. I'm looking for more restaurant type joints.

And Tetsuya is abit too expensive (not to mention excessive waiting time for bookings).

I'll check out the others.

Musuya

These three would be more your liking then.

If I had to choose I'd go for Musuya; it's more a little bit less "traditional" but the food is top-notch and great value. Be sure to book and bring a map or else you'll walk right past it and won't even know it was there.

Do you mean Masuya stan?

I couldn't find anything for Musuya

That being said, this Masuya place looks nice and reasonably priced.

Thanks once again for the help

the musashi 1 is better imo. atleast 4 wagyu beef

My top places are:

Sushi Suma - Cleavland St Surry Hills

Book ahead for this place because you'll know it from 3 blocks away by the queue waiting to get in every single night of the week. If you book ahead you wont necessarily get a table first but you go to the front of the line. The meals are cheap and large and the ingredients are fresh which are the main points I look for in a sushi place. Seating is tight and cramped but authentic Jap really.

$30 - $45 for two people is a huge feed here.

Masuya - O'connel St City

Classy Jap restaurant without being overly expensive you've probably all been here. The best thing on the menu is the sashimi boat which I can finish myself but really could feed 4 with assorted other things. They take bookings in two sessions. Early starts 6pm ish and you must be OUT by 8.15pm. Late starts 8.30pm and goes all night so book the late session if you want to tackle a few Sapporo cans with your giant sashimi boat.

Deserts here are awesome and somehow I once managed to get one of each on the house. Worth saving room for if you're into macha ice cream.

oh yeah and the specialty is Shabu-Shabu if you're into that.

Tetsuya-san is Japanese yes but it's not technically a Japanese resteraunt. I would rule this out of the thread. Especially since to book a table today you'd be looking at Feb - March dinner........

Another vote for Sushi Suma - Cleavland St Surry Hills, (right near the BP petrol station)

As Sewid said, LARGE meals, awesome value, and very tasty Teriyaki chicken. The Teriyaki and sushi combo is good pick, its around $14 and a big meal for one person.

Also true is that it is always packed. Im walking distance so its not so bad to turn up there and find a massive queue but booking is a good idea. Ive only ever been to have lunch there, ill try dinner soon!

Sewid, sounds like Masuya is my type of place, im excited to go check it out soon!

Kyushu in Neutral Bay - Affordable, fresh food and delicious. They're always busy so book ahead. They have the best teriyaki squid.

Tsukasa in Surry Hills

Juju's in Darlinghurst - Japanese Saloon-like atmosphere where you can hit the piss, eat good food then sing some karaoke!

Kai on King - King st Newtown. One of the best sushi bars I've been too in Sydney. Always fresh, excellent prices. Plus they had a stunning waitress there last yr :(

If you don't mind not so traditional types of Japanese food I would say Musashi near Capitol Theater is a good start or there's this new place in Sussex st (walk down from Liverpool st its on the right hand side) called Takeru. Both of those places have pretty good foods and quite affordable. At any night expect to stand in the queue for at least around 20 to 30 minutes though. Oh yeah there's also one more place on top of Oporto opposite Entertainment Centre which specialised in ramens but also other normal meals.
