The December 2006 issue of Motor has an article on the upcoming GTR. Highlights (and lowlights) of the article:

"We've previously mentioned the GT-Rs twin-turbo V6, but we can now tell you the new Godzilla will have a specially-built 3.8 litre (3789cc) V6 with twin turbos tuned by Cosworth, pumping out more than 357kw.

"Nissan's R&D division - in cahoots with Cosworth - have tuned the V6 to come on boost as low as 2000rpm, staying hot all the way to a 6000rpm redline. The mark is 1000rpm less than previous GT-R straight sixes, suggesting that the new engine will focus more on torque than power, with the car's acceleration expected to behave more like a big-block V8"

"Nissan is also working on a six or seven speed (still undecided) DSG style transmission... Manual will not be offered"

"Details on the AWD system are still sketchy... the system is totally new, and will not employ a centre differential"

"The Super-HICAS 4WS is also expected to be replaced"

"...one source reveals the new engine and 4WD system... may make the GT-R tip the scales at around 1800kgs"

"...by the time it hits Australian floors in early 2008, the price will have risen to more than $150,000"

This issue also has a few paragraphs on the upcoming Lexus LF-A Hybrid supercar and Audi R8, plus drives of the twin turbo BMW 335i, Audi S3 and Alfa 8C Spyder to name a few. It also details a rumour that Ferrari are developing an all-wheel-drive system (suitable for both front and mid engined cars) that will launch as an option on the Ferrari F430 replacement (possibly called the F470).

But it's the GTR you all care about :D

(EDIT: Added the Motor quote about the GTR weighing a wopping 1800kgs...)

6000 rpm redline. performs more like a big block v-8.

ummm.... that better be incorrect........

I wouldn't get too worried - there have been some fantastic low reving high torque turbo engines of late. Mazda MPS, Porsche 911 turbo, Ford F6 Typhoon, BMW 335i, etc. Plus there have been some fantastic big V8s, such as the 6.1 litre HEMI, 7.0 litre LS7 and 6.3 litre AMG engines. Whatever Nissan choose to do, Im sure the results will be spectacular!

The prototype running around the Nurburgring sounds like its hitting more than 6000RPM.

It would shit me if the GT-R was running a VQ38 that only revved to 6000RPM. The VQ40DE in the Pathfinder has the same redline, and while I realise its not boosted but at the same time one of these is a cheap 4WD engine and the other is in a flagship supercar.

No centre differential means its also more likely to be running a beefed up version of the e4WD. I just hope the engine continues to power the rear wheels full time, and the electric motors only drive the front wheels when necessary.

only 6000rpm? and THATS 1000rpm under the current redline?

Mmm, unless its different for R34's (and may well be) mine revs to 8000rpm before the redline, ovbiously a 2000rpm difference

1800kilos? send it to weight watchers first! Thats HEAPS!!!

Ya.. I better look out for that when I'm hitting 8500rpm since my redline was a fair while ago according to this obviously educated Australian motoring journalist.

FYI Factory cut in the R34 is 8200rpm.

  • 3 weeks later...
if it goes on sale for $150k, i've got a few 'told you so' replies to post in GTR threads

how heavy is the 997 Turbo?

In the lastest wheels magazine, it was mentioned that Nissan is bench marking the new GTR against the 997 Turbo. The 911 turbo redlines at 6750rpm, weighs around 1580kg and laps the 'ring in 7minutes, 40 seconds. Nissan is aiming to beat that time.

i was aware that Nissan is using the 997 Turbo as the benchmark. I've said for a while, 997 turbo beater, for half the price. That's where i reckon the new GT-R will fit.

I think there is next to no chance of the next GT-R being 1800kg, i'm guesing around 1600kg.

I don't think there is going to be any issues with the car, or its performance. The huge issues will be people spending that much on Nissan, and the ongoing service provided. The service levels provided between BMW M car owners (and BMW in generaly) and a say a Nissan 350z owner, are ENORMOUS! Current service is no where good enough to sell a car like the new GT-R. It will definitely need its own specialised team to look after the GT-R customers.

It also costs $1000 to do a minor service on an M3, from what I've been told. It costs less than half of that to service a 350Z.

If you want to pay your Nissan dealer $500 a pop to kiss your ass, I'm sure they will. But you'll get better value hiring a hooker to fellate you while your Nissan is having its oil changed than having some BMW service drone make you a coffee and offer you a danish.

Looks like my next car is going to be a R34GTR.........the new bitch has nothing I can play with and

she is fatter than a Monaro :ninja: .

Give me thin ,trim and a killing machine anytime. :)

1540kg is your idea of thin and trim?

    • Also had a look at the Nissan JP website looks like the 400r has a slightly shorter ratio than than the regular V37 3.133 VS 2.937 which from a guy who has driven both 3.69 vs 4.11 ratios in the S15 is bugger all. Seems that the AUTO Z runs the same ratio as the 400R but can't find any info as to if its an open or LSD? More often than not the auto LSD is open
    • Do not replace the power steering lines with this stuff. If it's anything like the Chase Bays stuff it will leak and be worse than stock. The reason why the reservoir is on the LH/passenger side of the car is because that's just where the reservoir was most convenient to fit. Don't overthink this stuff. The intake/cold side of the engine is pretty busy on these cars. And again, the hardpipe is designed to be a janky power steering cooler. In theory you can replace it with a real power steering cooler but that's really only for track use where boiling the fluid is a distinct possibility. Start with the low pressure lines feeding the pump from the reservoir. Make sure there isn't a bunch of junk in the reservoir filter. Be careful to not get ATF all over the engine bay. I hate dealing with ATF spills, you can clean it up and the slightest crevice will still release more oil that can still drip over time. You also want to inspect for leaks before you make a mess and can't tell what happened. Most likely you have a leak somewhere that is allowing fluid out and air in. Failing that it's allowing air in but not fluid out. Only place I can really see that happening is on the low pressure side because the pump will pull a slight vacuum to draw fluid in. Everything after the pump is high pressure or lower pressure, approaching atmospheric by the time it returns to the reservoir.
    • I did a skidpan night at SMSP this week, it was much cheaper than $350. But yeah, you need to slap an LSD in that thing.  I put an OS Giken in the 370Z and it's f**king MARVELOUS even compared to Nissan's viscous LSD. So you're saying it's free now that it's a housing estate? 😂
    • Nah, the car seems to run exactly as it did prior, in saying this it does "seem" to be better down low, like more eager to rev, but that may be 100% placebo effect from intake noise But, I'm not worried about it at all, in the end it is a fairly low compression NA engine that has a well shrouded intake,  if it is getting hotter IAT I cannot notice anything negative performance wise from the seat of my pants thrashing it about on the street or sitting in traffic, so meh, car now now makes induction noise so I'm happy
    • Do you have an IAT sensor? It's worth checking it to see. You may be suprised how little gap you actually need to flood your engine with hot air. (I tape up my airbox for a reason) :p
