Hey guys I realize this has been covered in an older post but it didn't adress a few questions i need to know!

Firstly who has brought a halfcut in perth (rb25det) for a GTS-T? $$$$$$? turbo/manifold or just basic engine?

Anyone had one imported? Import taxes etc cost?

I got quoted $1700 for the basic engine yesterday (thus use my own turbo manifold etc) compression 160 x 5 and 150 x1! does that sound alright? I dnt think it 2 crash hot!

Ive worked out i will also need aout $400 worth of additional parts!

And how much would my old engine be worth 140000km, wouldnt be worth jack hey? (maybe for a rebuild project)?

I am seriously thinking about doing the work myself! I know that may sound a little silly but i do have a motocross backround and have rebuilt a number of bikes and i think i could nut it out!

Has anyone jumped in and done conversion themselfs with little mechanical background like myself?

has anyone got someone to do it for them? cost?

Anyone out there prepared to give us a hand ?(paying offcourse)

just replacing the engine with a fresher one?

half cuts in perth would be $3500-4000

thats engine, gearbox, wirin loom, turbo, manifold the lot

i think hyperdrive charges around 1k to replace an engine (dun quote me on this, it was a while ago)

rebuild with forgies would set you back 5-12k depending on parts

but if you only need your engine for daily drivin and mild mods a replacement is good enuff, if ur chasin big power get a rebuild

or go for a rb25/30 rebuild :(:D (2-3k ontop of the rb25 rebuild)

If you already have an RB25 why not buy a RB30 bottom end (~$100) and rebuild it with nissan parts (~$900) and put it back together again. Add your head studs and gaskets on top of that and you have a new engine of monstrous proportions (300rwkw on a stock bottom end has been done).

Go read the RB30 thread in the FI section... cmon do it... you know you want to :(

i'm swapping my dead 25, for a fresh 25 at the moment.

and im not the most mechanically minded of people either :(

admittedly its taken me a while (i've been lazy as i have a company car, and rarely drive my skyline...)

but its not as hard as you think..

remove all the intercooler piping, radiator, etc etc..

unbolt air con and p/s pumps, take out radiator, remove all the wiring loom, heater hoses, fuel lines, exhaust, remove driveshaft, unbolt engine and gearbox mounts, and its essentially out.

Yeh mate compressions down in 6th so I guess Im just preparing for the inevitable! I mean the car could last me quiet a while longer if i drive fairlly sedately for majority of time; however as you know it is a skyline and thats no what they were made for! haha and who am i to argue with manufacturers! haha

Yeh so Im trying to decide how to best spend money!

Do a buy a 2nd hand 25Det stocky with say under 80k on the clock with decent compression for what $2000 and thus just replace my engine????

So yeh i dnt need a halfcut really , i was just thinking it would be nice to have some spares and new gearbox without a 4th gear f**kd syncro, but chances are 2nd handy will hav same prob!

I cant see myself being able to rebuild the engine (and it pritty pointless to replace with OEM when for k more can chuck in sum forgies)! so looking t about $6000 but then i guess the skys the limit with Hp!

Or do i simply refresh my engine for what $4000 provided pistons and cylinders are still in good nick!

I would also like to state that I'm not after too much over 300hp and would be quiet happy just to get to 300, so do I really need forgies and a rebuild???????

That is a good point! Risky business! But whos to say rebuild will last there is no such thing as warranties on turbos! I mean yeh you obviously get parts warranty but shit I think its risky whatever way you go???????

Have a quick look at the RB30 Results thread. I think it was cubes saying that when he used a stock RB20 turbo he made 100kw by 2000 rpm and a max of 180 at 5000 rpm (iirc). A larger turbo should shift the power curve towards the redline and stop the wheelspin :wave:

You won't get 300rwkw off the stock turbo however.... or stock engine management... or stock fuel system. Theres alot of money thats goes along with it. And those prices don't include labor, thats if your building it yourself.

It's not a cheap exercise, but if your thinking of building rebuilding an RB25. I dout it'll cost any extra to do the RB30 instead.

Ben at I think its KPR or something close but his on president street welshpool and has just landed a pile of import parts.

Its KYP by the way, I highly recommend them. They got a new shipment in last week I think.

Did I mention that someone else made said 300rwkw on a non-rebuilt stock RB30 bottom end. Bet it was the best $150 he spent on his engine :wave:

We could always drop it into my 32... I got a R33 gearbox in there already just screaming for an overpowered engine :)

Yeh had quick look those results are bullshit! Im intrigued now Im going to have to have a better look into it now, theres quiet a few things im not understanding! But i guess upgrading the stock turbo; engine management; fuel system is inevitable either way if im headn for some decent Hp!

I just started reading the "R33 RB30 Conversion by JNR24" ha 231pages and yeh it is way way over my head I think i have a lot to learn, maybe i will read my manual front to back and try grasp better understanding of components!

By the sounds of it it would be "HUGELY" beneficial if i was to rebuild ;rebuild with the RB30!

True but a refresh to get my compression back up to where I want it will cost $4000+, provided no cylinder or piston damage (no way of knowing)!

On the otherhand I might pick up a better 25det for $1500-$2500 drop it in myself and save $2000! Still there is no way of knowing what kind of life engine has had!

Yeh I was thinking bout your second point all i need is ECU (power fc $950) Turbo kit (decent one what $2000-2500) and everything else i have already put in car 'clutch, fuel pump, timing belt! will need injectors tho (lots of 2nd handys around tho)!

Do I settle for 300, thts the question!

S2’s have different front bars to s1 so that lip with the 3 holes are *probably* mounting points for the s2 bar. im not 100% sure but im almost certain it will still fit a s1 bar       
    • Everyone is too used to learning from places like HPA "how to tune" and what to expect at what point, rather than being able to see "The computer says I'm in cell with Row = 8, column =4, and I can see my fuel is lean, so lets add more" Everyone wants "real units", which helps for someone picking it up for the first time and seeing how bad the tune is if they're not used to touching it.   However, I think for most of us who want to play with it, you're 100% right, we're only needing to learn about it for OUR CAR. Which makes it great, and we don't need to care what the real values are, we just need to know which cell it is, that's causing the lean or rich point, or that we want more ignition timing or less. But again, everyone wants everything super you beaut and nearly self tuning, with VE maps, and a billion compensations...   Though then there's me over here when I'm doing reverse engineering work just reading data in hex format that most people couldn't work anything out from. Yet I can see what's going on.
