by not working do you mean not registering at all or just not moving as the car gets hotter or colder? because once warmed up i'm yet to see a stock temp gauge on a 32 budge a mm my mate had his car up to 108c and the gauge just sat where it normally was if it wearn't for the after market comp we prolly wouldn't have noticed it was hot till it was a bit to late the gauge on my hyundai on the otherhand is excellnt, go figure.

I'm guessing you're actually referring to the temperature gauge. The sender is the single-pin sensor located in the front of the engine - just follow the top radiator hose towards the engine, and you will stumble across 2 sensors (the other has 2 pins / wires).

Simple check is to switch the ignition to "ON", then ground the wire going to the sensor (connect the sensor wire to a metal part of the engine, an unfolded paper clip is useful for ensuring the terminal can connect to "earth") - if the gauge goes "full scale", then the gauge is working, and the sensor is faulty.
