1971 Skyline, rebuilt to GT-R specs using genuine GT-R components. I reckon she looks pretty hot, even if it is only a replica. It's almost R34 GTR money (wait a few weeks for the R34 to devalue another $20,000 or so and it will be!), but I reckon it's far cooler, far sexier, will hold it's value far better, get more admiration from the right people, less admiration from the wrong people and not attract too many coppers. Yeah, I want one! So, what would you take? This or an R34 GTR?

Do you think it would still look this good in the Australian outback? It just looks so at home on those mountain roads! It'd also be nice to see a little more of the interior...

I'd take a real KPGC10 over an R34 GTR anyday. That said I'd rather buy a GT-X and retrofit it with newage skyline gear.

When we came across this one in the office we ooh'd and aaaah'd for a while, and agreed that we'd all love to see it in our garages. Its about as good as a GT conversion's gonna get. Genuine KPGC10's cost about the same as an R34 GTR V Spec :D

I just love how there's an R32 and a <edit:S30> in the background in a couple of the pics.

Damn nice car. It's not rebuilt to "GT-R Specs" though, it "just" has the GT-R look. I dare say it has a fair bit more power than an original GT-R :P heh heh

A good price for all the goodies you're getting!! This over an R34 any day of the week thanks.

For people in the know, what exactly does the $7,500 go towards?? I thought there wouldn't be much to do for a 30yr old vehicle in regards to compliance.

P.S. That's an S30 not a Kenmeri.

Awesome! For me, as cool as an original one is, I'd have no interest in a fragile, irreplaceable and gutless 160hp 2 litre (even if it sounds nice) when I could have a replica with everything else and a thumping 3.1+ L motor.

And yeah I'd probably rather have that and a HR31 GTS-R, instead of an R34 GT-R.

The breakdown goes a lil something like this:

J-Spec Fee: $1000

Shipping: $1800

GST: $4700

THere's no compliance (in Victoria) or import duty necessary on a car that old, which is pretty cool. The large chunk of it goes to the tax man.

We're goin with oldschool cool as a theme for now, as we've had a fair few requests for good quality restored japanese classics of late (fairlady's, celica's, C10, C110's, etc)... esp from cashed up collectors in the US. If the car is mint they're willing to pay the asking price of japanese sellers.

Good stuff. The Americans are really lapping this stuff up lately. Still don't know of any authentic GT-R in the U.S.A., but at this rate it won't be long. Be sure to let us know if something special does make its way over there (or here, as unlikely as that is).

When I started thinking about this I started leaning towards the R34 out of practicallity with being able to afford spare parts and because of the difference in power.

But then I started thinking of that old cartoon 'Speed Racer' and I thought this car would best suit that cartoon so I'm going with this oldskool machine.

That's a strange comparison. Why are you quoting the power figure for a totally standard S20 when the L28-based engine in the car in question is so highly modified? Talk about comparing apples to oranges.

The S20 is hardly "fragile". It is certainly not "irreplaceable" or "gutless" either.

Have you ever driven an S20-engined car?

    • GTSBoy on your suggestion on another thread I had a look at those injectors and ended up getting them because of the quality.  Got the expensive ones.  
    • Hey guys been looking everywhere to try and find the correct gtr hood latch support part number but only found the first half and when I search with that number it sends me to an r34. The first part I found was 62515. If anyone could help me with the rest then I’d really appreciate it. Or if there’s some alternative hood latch support that would work even better cause I can’t find any for sale. (Searched on upgarage, partsouq,buyee,rhdjapan) 
    • If you've only done the upper control arms on the rear, AND you have changed their length (by more than about 1mm) to set the camber you want, then you will definitely need/want to install traction arms also. Adjusting the camber arms on their own WILL introduce bump steer and make the car unpleasant to drive. Most owners have no idea that their car could behave infinitely better than what they put up with. I'm not entirely sure what the Stageas need, but I am thinking that unless you have massive front spring rates and pretty soft rear springs, you have waaaay too much rear bar. Oversteer city, in my estimation. Combined with possible excessive bump steer from maladjusted arms, that could be a recipe for nastiness. ATR43SS2 is not a highflow. It is an outright replacement turbo. It's a little bit bigger than the largest highflow profile that Tao does. Probably a solid 300rwkW turbo where the bigger highflows will be about 30-40rwkW less. Nevertheless, we're only talking about ~300 rwkW, which is well within the abilities of the stock ECu to run with a Nistune on board. I would do so without hesitation - and I will be doing so when I get my finger out and actually get the injectors and AFM installed. But, if you would prefer to drop a whole lot more money on the ECU side, then I suspect you're looking at Haltech. The Haltech fanbois here will all spout on about all the available engine protection you can have, that you can't have with the Nistune option. And they're right. But it doesn't really come for free either. You will spend more money on extra sensors and the like, plus the work to install them. If the engine was built and therefore represented a big investment to protect, then I'd say definitely do it. If you view the current (and forever into the future) shortage of replacement engines as something to prompt similar protection, then also, do it. If you see a destroyed RB25 as an opportunity to put in a Mercedes or other V12 (like I kinda do)... then your perception of the risk/reward might differ. These are good injectors. You can also get a "better" set of the same with more flow matching, for more $$. 1000cc is where you will want to be. You will need an R35 AFM and adapter tube if you want to stay with Nistuned stock ECU. Otherwise, if going Haltech, you can ignore. As for intercooler. Just about anything will do. You're only talking about ~300rwkW. Just put a big core in there. Be aware that return flows do add significant pressure drop and will cost power and will make the turbo work harder to achieve the same goals. If you can manage a proper crossflow, do it. I'm keeping my very good return flow because I'm only expecting to be in the ~250rwkW range, and will live with whatever outcome I get.
