Ok - the SBS theory is officially busted.

5 GT-R's from Vic - where we don't suffer from SBS - just made the trip to NSW all on semi-comp tires and packing a decent punch to complete 2 full days at Eastern Creek and Wakefield and have seen no sign of SBS. All that was needed was an extra litre of oil - and making sure the oil to start with is good stuff.

So SBS - Busted.

R32 FFS however (firewall fire syndrome) is definitely confirmed. 2 out of 2 R32's igniting their firewalls at EC is definitely something I'd be looking into if I was an R32 owner. That shit isn't cool. Engines can be fixed. Burnt to the ground shells are a little harder. Luckily that stuff burns slower than a cigar but still...

WTF?

Anyway, If you didn't all drive like girls you would get oil surge :(

What did you guys think of Eastern Creek, and how did you go for times?

lol. i needed 2L extra. unless my oil pressure guage needle is efected by hard left handers :)

although its pretty hard to hold a nice line while staring at a guage to see it bounce. wich it does. (not the factory one)

ps..WTF does sbs stand for?

sbs = sump baffle syndrome, it causes gtrs to sit in the garage instead of on the track until they have a baffled sump. It first appeared in NSW after a couple of cars spun bottom end bearings on the track (mine included), but has never seemed to spread to Vic.

Wierd.

well thats just rubbish.

I don't know why you guys haven't had as much trouble as we hasve had up here but here are some things to consider:

* You guys have seen the same issue

All that was needed was an extra litre of oil

fair enough if you are happy with band aid solutions but don't try and claim there is no issue

* there is *far* more experience with proper circuit racing in NSW. Mark and I have been racing GTRs up here for 4 seasons, and sydneykid and those guys have even more experience. There is a world of difference between a 3 lap supersprint and a 12 lap race. There are no gtrs circuit racing in vic.

* may even be as simple as there are no big g, long right handers in vic, oran park off the bridge for instance is huge for surge.

Ever since putting in the trust sump we have had no oil pressure problems anywhere, circuit racing or at targa. This includes a 1 hour enduro at Oran Park where we ran out of fuel after 57 minutes racing but had no surge issues.

Its not rubbish far as i see it.

The problem is not due to the sump at all. The band-aid is spending money on the sump when its not whats causing it.

Its to do with the head retaining to much oil... hence the overfil counters it on a stocker motor to last out a 3-4lap sprint.

The problem arises when people dont overfil, after some laps there is not enough oil left down below and low-n-behold it does a number on the bearings.

If you have the motor apart, do the head right and there wont be a problem. Just over fill it and run around happy as a pig in poop.

That many cars that are doing some scorching times have no issues...

But then most of them have been loved by Racepace :D

Hay shed at P.I. is a 180+ right hander in a car with good rear end grip.

I have a 1994 R32 with a stock bottom end. So far 7 events with oil filled to the top of the dipstick "hump" with Castrol Edge 10W60, so good. Have had 3 20 minute sessions at P.I. with no issues.

That said, when the engine comes apart for a refresh - every manner of oil control issue will be addressed.

Regards

Andrew

    • Plan on the day will be to park trackside. Depending on space availability we will try put a small shade tent and a few of the cars on top of the hill inside turn 3, this is an easy to get to parking area with views of Turn 2, Turn 3, Turn 4 and Turn 5 and limited other pieces of the view around the track. IMPORTANT NOTE! One consideration from previous years is from memory the trackside parking sells out before the admission tickets, for that reason I encourage anyone planning on coming to buy tickets for parking now via the official website; https://www.worldtimeattack.com/ The type of parking you are looking for is 2 Day Park & View (Access Around Venue) Vehicle Pass Only Please note this does not include admission to the event itself, remember to grab that also, and kids under 12 get in for free!
