firstly what is the difference between bar & plate cooler and tube & fin? what are the performance gains/losses? also i will be upgrading my intercooler shortly and am after a 600/300/100mm core size with 3" end tanks. where is the best place to get one of these? all i can find is kits for various cars. not after a cheap one either. thanks..

search, search, search

its been covered a million times before

the main differences are drag vs track use

both have advantages and disadvantages for each use

what core do u currently have and what do you hope to achieve?

Im after a FMIC upgrade from stock on my R33. I have read all the links above and still cant seperate them. The bar and plate seems to be easier to get my hands on and cheaper. Im after a cooler that is good for a couple of runs at the drags but also is being effective to cool over long periods of driving, as i drive an hour to work and from work every day. This heak soak mentioned for the Bar and plate, is it going to be an issue over say a 2 hour drive? is it still better then the stock? Im just after something for Around 200kw, bit of drag, but more importantly something that will work best for everyday use. Thanks!!

nismo god after reading the trhreads i can safely say you would be after tube and fin. bar and plate should definately out perform the factory cooler.

paulr33 u think so? what the problem with going too big? can get a good price on a second hand hks one 600/300/110 but seems a lil large. just dont want to have problems down the track and have to change piping etc..

If it's for dragging (and you're going to enjoy trying to get 400rwkw to the ground) then throttle response is less important so bigger piping would not be a hinderance in that respect and can only be better in terms of flow.

But... (and I am purely talking out of my arse here).. the restriction of the system is only as much or little as the most restrictive part. In other words, what plenum and throttlebody are you using? Don't bother going any bigger than that.

Also I think that changes in restriction aren't helpfull either. Ie, from restrictive afm (for egsample only) to big piping to small throttle body. You might as well have had piping the same size as the smallest one of those 2 in the first place.

And finally for general reference; Bar and plate = cooler, tube and fin = flows better. You trade one for the other.

spend the money elsewhere

Agreed, i think most of these 600x 300x 76 cheap intercoolers really are fine for 600hp. ive made 327rwkw with a stuffed r32 gtr cooler(looks like some kids ran their finger along all the fins)Realistically they are all basically similar, about 10 times bigger than the stock one so none of these would be too small.

When GTR's with stock coolers make a lot more than 350rwkw pretty easily.

I reckon it leaves the door open to anything that size or bigger will do.

If your dragging (auto) then it really wont matter, manual it might more-so.

abo bob currently i am using a greddy plenum with a rb25det throttle body (need the greddy adaptor). there is a pic attached. the thing i am worried about is the piping and throttle body (2.5") being too small as well as the cooler. dont want to get the thing going then realise its not cooling to the levelit should be..
