hey man

now i am speaking from experience, givin i have a pritty exceptional driving record, but when i was 17 i was crazy, i admit it, it was a mirical that i didnt get caught or worse. now i look back and am glad i drove a 1995 lancer stocker for over 4 years, then a 4x4 and then an astra, and now i finally got my r34 GTT and im stoked, i pay 1440 a year full comp and im 22. im glad a waited to get the skyline, i looked into it when i was 19 and it was like 4000 a year, just not worth it man.

and being 17 no offence but everyone drives fast when they are 17, and if any 1 says they dont they are full of shit, its a freedom thing. im not sayin its not wrong its just the truth hence the big premiums. stats prove it and you can argue it all you want under 25 drivers are a risk for insurance companies.

so take the advice, dont buy an import str8 up, just not worth it in the long run, in 4 years you would have paid as much as the car in insurance, let alone rego and maintainence.

get something that you can make look good for eg something that has alot of bolt on stuff out and do that. the new lancer mivec is a quick lil car and doesnt look 2 bad, a mates got one and i like drivin it.

from one car enthusiast to another:

get some experience with driving etc....im glad i got my R33 when I was 24. Had I got it when I was 17, i surely wouldnt be here now. You said you had a years worth of experience driving a vl - with no licence too might I add - a years worth of experience isnt going to teach you much. And at 16/17 no kid realises that he/she has to be responsible on the roads - most kids just speed (i know one guy - he was 18 at the time - who did 110 in a 60 zone - got caught by the speed camera, then did 130 in a 70 zone - and curry parents, when they know their kid(s) did something stupid its a beating for sure), show off to their mates and do the "cool" stuff that they see on the fast and furious.

Its obvious that your mind is made up. But do pause and think about it. Get the experience - preferably with someone who has been driving for a while (i.e your parents), and use a car that is easy to control if situations get out of hand.

Even with my 9 years worth of experience (including L's), when I first got the skyline I had to get used to the fact that it was a rear wheel drive - and the first time i really got reminded was when I slid it in the wet while taking a turn. Let go of the gas, and concentrated on controlling the car. Wasnt in any danger, but it certainly woke me up. Had this happened to me when I was 17, I wouldnt have known what to do.

Lifes short, but you dont have to make it shorter.

Every insurance company I have spoken to has given me a full NCB even though I've been driving company cars / fleet vehicles until I bought my current car. That means I've pretty much never had insurance with my name on it until now.

All the companies I spoke to (NRMA, Just Cars, Young & Cool, Famous & Classic, Shannons, to name the ones I can remember) just asked me how many years I'd been driving for, and how many accidents I'd had, and calculated my NCB off that. They just took me at my word.

Even then, some of them didn't ask for the name of everyone driving the car. The only thing they wanted to know is the age and driving history of the youngest driver. Some asked for the number of drivers, and the above details for the youngest only. And that youngest driver is what they base the premium and excesses on.

Just remember, it costs insurance companies almost nothing to let you give them money...which is all they're doing when they collect your premium.

Now, if you get into an accident, they'll run a history on you themselves. If they find out that you were lying about your accident / infringement history....not only do they get to keep your premium, but they don't have to pay out your claim either. Win-win, for the insurer.

Its in the insurer's best interests to not scrutinise you too closely when taking your money, and let you lie as a convenient escape clause from the policy.

It doesn't matter too much to them whether an idiot pays them $3000 a year or $3500 for a sheet of paper and an entry in a computer database, but it does matter to them whether they pay said idiot $15000 or $0 when they inevitably smash their car.

Here's my experience

I bought my R33 GTST within two months of my 18th b`day... and boy did i thrash that car, almost died in it. I sold the car 11months later b'coz i knew if had kept it any longer it would be my end. It truly is a miracle that i never got caught speeding but that doesn't mean it wont happen to you either. I was speeding pretty much every time i got in the car, doing wild insane stunts, switching lanes on the freeway etc.. it was crazy :);) Until i once had a near death experience, could of died but i guess it just wasn't my time yet and that woke me up so i decided to get rid of the car and it was a the best decision i made. So i went out bought something reliable and near new Pulsar and had been driving that for almost 3 years till recently sold it.

So what I'm saying is, no matter how much you say " nahhh i wont be like that bloke, i'm going to behave " we both know you are only kidding your self. When your young, you do all these crazy shit you find amusing and mostly come from peer pressure. It's your money buy what ever you want but these are just an advice from those who once have been 17-18 yr olds and has been threw it, experienced it all. If you know for a fact that you will behave when driving then go for it man, but from what I have gathered from your posting tone I highly doubt it.

Once you mature up to 20-22yrs old, you don't even speed anymore, you just cant be bothered to speed.. Like my self, i know when to speed and when not to. During week days i stick to the speed limit and drive calmly but weekends, on open roads, no traffic.. its a different story!

You would be crazy to pay a premium like that for an NA R34. As has been said you are way better off buying something else for the time being until you build up a driving history and then the insurers will give you a better price on the Skyline. It dosn't have to be a shitta of a car either - there are plenty of cars for $20K and under that you would get insurance for - just an example but what about a BA Falcon XR6 (N/A) (easy find one under $20K) - damn nice car for a 17 year old, cheap insurance and pretty quick as well. Plenty of other cars to choose from as well that have already been mentioned.

mate seriously if you are buying a $20K car u need comp insurance. but in 4 years u have repaid the value. if this is not to your approval by a non imported car and just wait a few years. I had to drive a pulsar around for 18 months and before that it was a VR commodore. it costed me $950 for full comp on the 2001 pulsar for agreed value of $16000 and $250 for third party prop for the commodore. its your choice, pay super high amount for the skyline now, or hold off and get the same car for alot cheaper in 18-24 months.

um.. ok u know how everyone does that put it under mummy or daddys name thing? is that worth it.. my parenst have 2 cars isured with NRMA, have our house isnured with NRMA, u reccon with all there no claim bonus etc i could get insured for less.. or no chance with nrma?

Thats the go mate. Get it insured under your mum or dads name and make sure its covered for drivers under 21. Then be named as a nominated driver on one of their cars, this way you still get a rating.

cheers

And the problem is, he has to be listed as driving the car 90% of the time, which again, boosts the premium right through the roof.

It works out cheaper for me to insure my skyline under my name, with my father listed as a 10% driver, then to have him insure it under his name (With brilliant record) and have me listed as a 90% driver.

If you list yourself as a minimalist driver, they'll soon find out, when they check out "Hey, Mum/Dad drive there own car to work each day, they possibly couldn't rack up another 1000KM on the weekend, so Son X has to be driving it most of the time."

It's blatantly obvious that sort of stuff.

no that NOT the go, as i said above, i done that, was named a nominated driver, and got bent over when i got insuance under my name.

its simple, get a cheap car, and by cheap i dont mean a bucket of shit VL. get some newish, aircon, 4 banger etc. and wait a couple of years.

Wrong.

my advise

im 19 and i had my r33 gtst for 2 yrs

from my experience just be really carful if u do get a turbo skyline

it does get tempting to hit boost and get sideways but if u can learn to control urself if feels like a normal car

everyone told me i was gonna die when i was about to buy my r33......but if u drive ur car normally IMO it should be ok

nothing great about an na gtt

looks like your just after looks

its you cash and your life. if your heart is set on getting it then you'll get it.

i went through the negativity when i bought my r33 gtst (it was my present for myself for my 21st).

just be very careful but. 2hours after buying mine the back end slid out and scared myself 3 people in the car and about 4-5 cars of oncoming traffic. they tend to do that if you unexperienced. but 3 years later it does it on command :ninja:

haha

just think about it man it really is an expensive car

lol you know just because someone is on their Ps and they get a turbo skyline it doesn't automatically mean they're gonna kill themselves..... :pirate:

and seriously what is it with people telling others to get shit boxes or lasers to get some "experience" ? coz thats the biggest load of crap ever. honestly what kind of experience do you think he's gonna get driving a laser? just because you get a slower car deosn't mean you'll never have an accident.

if you have the money and you know what you want then get it. FFS why get a shitter when you can get a decent car. if you're worried about insurance then ofcourse you'll need to stay away from these kinda cars atm.

i got a wrx when i was 18 for my first car, never had insurance coz i knew it was probably impossible to get but i chose to drive what i want rather than worry about insurance (probably stupid but thats me) and i've never had any incidents and hopefully never will (touch wood)

like skyline17 said if you know you're mature enough(your brain not your age) to drive a more powerful car then go with it.
