Hi Guys,

I am after some info on the legalities of car mods in Victoria as I am moving to melbourne just before/just after christmas.

Could you please let me know if I will have any problems with the authorities using my car in Melbourne. I can probably keep the WA plates on it for a few months, but in the end I might need to register in Vic...or can I keep it registered in WA and drive on WA plates? Any knowledge on this will be greatly appreciated :O

Do you know how it will affect insurance if I have it registered in WA, and then need to claim in Vic?

Thanks Paul :)

If I join SAU VIC can you post the gear over here? or do I need to wait until I have a Melbourne address?

oh...and do you know if I will get much crap from the police because of the WA plates?

Thanks mate

:O

Jason....I've done the exact opposite and moved (albeit temp) from Vic to WA...you should've asked me about it at the drags :O

Forget getting your car rego'd in Vic with obvious big mods like on your car.

Basically the rules are that if you still have an address in WA you can keep your WA licence and rego. If not, you can keep them for a max of 3 months before you need to change them. It will only be after this 3 months that you won't have a leg to stand on in regard to police.

Any other questions feel free to PM.

Jason, as i told ya a while ago... you come with that car... pray.

And pray hard.

Its the only thing that might save you :O

If you get pinned and sent to the EPA, its pretty much remove every mod on the car and return it to standard.

You can join SAU-Vic anytime, we'll post to WA no problems :)

With WA plates you might get singled out more

Plus you car from the exterior doesnt exactly look standard... so you will be a target.

What area of Melb are you going to be in?

Insurance wont matter, but if you live in Vic for 4-5 months and are permanent, and you insure the car in WA as a residency, they i think you'll be voiding your policy.

Best to talk to the insurance company about that.

Vic - you can keep the WA rego/license for 3 months only. After that you wil get fined also if your pulled over and they find out you've been here for a while

:)

Thanks Ant...I knew you came over from Vic, but didn't get around to asking you about it. If you will be at the member dinner and/or cruise I will have a chat to you about it :P

I can leave the car registered at my parents place here, so that will be ok, and insurance is combined with their car/house insurance :)

Only if you don't have a residential address in WA Ash.....

and Jason I will be on the cruise mate. :P

Hi Ash,

I will be praying hard :P Most likely will be around the Brighton East area.

Surely there are guys there with pretty modded cars...how do they get around it?

your goin to get raped :) nice car btw

Thanks :P will have to keep my back to the wall then lol

Only if you don't have a residential address in WA Ash.....

and Jason I will be on the cruise mate. :P

Cool, I can have keep a residential address in WA :) Will have to question the insurance policy about being in a different state to the registered address :P

See you on the cruise :) ...or before :)

Only if you don't have a residential address in WA Ash.....

and Jason I will be on the cruise mate. :P

But if the same copper see's him once, and then 2-3 months later... and with WA plates its a standout for sure.

Questions will be asked... questions you dont really want.

Unless i was mistaken about how the rules work... you cant have a car rego'd in WA and be living in Vic (over 3 months) even if you have a residential address, its not classed as your residence if your not living there permanently

They dont drive thier cars @ night

In high-risk areas

Dont hit boost anywhere

Have quiet exhausts

Stock wheels/body kits

etc etc. The less attention the better basically is the aim if you wanna try live :)

Either that or they have RB26's with low mounts and live a hassle free life :)

Brighton isnt too bad, im only 10mins away. But when you get here i'll show you where to and not to go haha ;)

Just be careful where you drive it and how you drive it. If you are doing a lot of night driving with few other cars on the road, you will stand a higher chance of being pulled over.

I have been driving around the Brighton area for 4 years plus on and off and never once seen a car being defected and only once a traffic car parked up. Its a nice area and several others could probably elaborate more like Sarahb.

Is it a daily driver as if not, several people drive more outrageous cars for weekenders only and dont get a lot of bother.

haha cool ;) I will let you know when I arrive and we can go over the safe areas :P

what is the problem with driving at night?

It will mostly be a weekender only, and it sounds like tht is the way to keep it :P

brighton has porsches and ferraris - but down beach rd i have seen a fair few imports.

This might be a very long way of doing things, but cant he borrow stock parts, install them, get the car registered and what not and then put back the mods? Thats if he wants to have Vic registration?

Bah - Ask Blaise about the secrets of the WA 'get out of jail free' plates.

He'll be in the grey Lancer being pulled over somewhere near Perth :P

So was it a good experience with the secret or a bad one? :P

yeah what ash said... try and take off the stickers, keep the noise down, and try and make it near legal height...

should be OK

oh and don't drive like a pratt

The height is sitting on 100mm which is the legal limit here...is it the same in Vic?

Thanks for all the info guys :)

Insurance shouldn't care where its registered, but you should give them the correct garaged address.

I don't know what it will be like with WA rego, but with NSW rego you can get the renewals sent to a Victorian address, so you don't even need a residential address out of Victoria.
