Hi Guys,

I am after some info on the legalities of car mods in Victoria as I am moving to melbourne just before/just after christmas.

Could you please let me know if I will have any problems with the authorities using my car in Melbourne. I can probably keep the WA plates on it for a few months, but in the end I might need to register in Vic...or can I keep it registered in WA and drive on WA plates? Any knowledge on this will be greatly appreciated :P

Thanks :P I am hoping to not get too much hassle, and will drive it al little as possible...at 104db do you think it's a little loud? haha :)

Will be in bayside...from Brighton down to Beaumaris and inland to Brighton East. We were looking at buying a house in Brighton East, but going to let it go...house here not sold yet.

Mmmm yeah not the best for that kinda car. If you were going west or north no so much of an issue I think.

It can sit in the garage most days, and I can get it off the road for a few months with a rebuild

Can I email my membership form in or does it have to be posted? :)

If you want to scan and e-mail thats fine. Just make sure you attach some DD info. Ta.

I just edited the pdf document  Do I email it to you, or someone in particular?

Ah, i was in WA while you were in London

I met heaps of SAU people, was hoping i didnt forget you haha

Damn...I missed out on heaps of things while I was in London. Only just getting to know some of the SAUWA guys

Hey all,

I'm curous about the legallities of modifying your car in vic as ive only had my skyline for a couple months now and havent really done anything to it yet.

But what is the legislation on it, which piece of paper should i be trying to find that states out what is legal and whats not?

Cheers

Cam

ok i pretty much answers my own question with my last post with these two links

VicRoads Standards Information

Australian Design Rules

Although i still do have question to do with intake systems. I have read else where on this formum that in melbourne you can only get away with one intake mod so either a pod filter or an aftermarket intercooler for example, but not both. But over these documents i didnt see anything about the intake side of an engine (except for installing a bigger turbo).

I have put a pod on the car and will prolly put a fmic after the turbo back exhaust gets installed.

So are you telling me that every single person ive ever seen with an aftermarket intercooler and pod is driving illegally, or is it that easy to get an engineers certificate?

Thats what the link says :P

And no, emissions stuff isnt feabily engineerable.

Too long of a discussion to get into

I did the move down from Sydney; sold my mildly modified GTR rather than face any potential problems bringing it down here.

Have certainly noticed driving around that there is nowhere near the amount of imports on the road as in Sydney. As to if this is because of the areas I have been around or that the reputation as the police state rings true I can't determine.

Whats the worst that they will do down here? Either way, good luck with it all. There are alot of racetracks and alot of days on!

Worst:

Defect the car thus meaning a potential large amount of work to make it legal again

If it is returned to the illegal state and picked up, there are further ramifications

It really sucks and makes me think carefully about stuff for mine. :P

I don't know for certain but as far as I am aware, if you get EPA'd, a testing station must be within X amount of kms of your registered address. Now if you have an address in WA for example I can't see how they can make you attend an inspection in Victoria.

My car is registered in another state as I am in Victoria temporarily but I have always be interested to get to the bottom of these things. I can't see how legally you can receive a yellow sticker if your car is registered interstate unless of course it was for obvious unroadworthy items such as bald tyres, lights not working etc. Even then I still wonder whether they police have any legal right to put the car off the road??

Interesting discussion none the less :P

Honestly I would never drive a car like that anywhere in Melbourne without Engineers and emission test. The TMU will see you driving and get very happy indeed! But considering the time and money you seem to have put into the car already, you should investigate getting an emission and engineer cert. Expensive but worthwhile.

When an engineers is only valid for 28 days?

And when an EPA approval test is probably going to cost anywhere from 3-8k...

Just to drive a car in a certain state? hardly worthwhile if you ask me.

its made ocstly for a reason, so people wont do it.

    • Coming home late at night and driving past the police is the only reason i need one haha And yeh, definitley needs a switch to quickly enable it, dont have time to be getting my phone, opening an app, waiting for it to update etc before being able to make the change
    • Because it is financially convenient for them lol. Why wouldn't they want to give you the lowest possible valuation for your car?
    • Yep. @Duncan also shannons they will rip you dry and will be probably limited on how much you can drive. Also keep in mind that you always have to have it garaged with Shannons, with enthusiasts as per their PDS you can have it 2 times per week on the driveway for example.
    • I had a generic 4" Varex rear box on my old V8, worked a treat for sneaking home late at night, it was as quite as stock when closed The car was "fairly" loud when open as it consisted of 1" 7/8 headers to 3" catted Y pipe, to 4" single, it did have a resonator in the mid pipe and only the Varex out the back I also hard wired in a Varex dash mount switch, as the key fob thing is a pain to use when driving I wouldn't recommend giving the beans when it is closed though as it creates a large restriction in the exhaust  It also can in very handy when pulled over for "random" breath tests or just cruising past the constabulary
    • Here is the before and after of the scraping/sanding of the IC pads on the tachometer board for the fix mentioned in this thread. And yes it worked fine after. Just a note if you change any components on the board the tach calibration can be wrong showing the wrong idle etc...only problem is once it is installed back in the cluster you can't get to it to adjust...ouch! My fix was to cut out the calibration pot (the blue one) from the board and run it with two wires to the fuse panel under the dash where I could adjust the idle calibration once everything was installed. And yes I soldered everything up again including the half soldered components either side of the IC in my photos
