Over the last two tanks of petrol that I've used, my car seems to be guzzling it down like theres no tomorrow. I thought it might have just been doing it's normal thing of having a bad tank of petrol and then getting heaps of k's out of the next tank.

This wasn't the case. Then I went down the coast sat night on our cruise and it used 1/2 a tank of petrol. That was just with normal driving and no hard acceleration. It doesn't seem to have the pick up it normally does.

If the turbo's blown, it wouldn't be making boost... right?

Also, when I first start the car it idles at 1500rpm and seems to drop spasmodically when ever it wants, meaning it doesn't idle like that until it gets to running temperature (sometimes it just keeps ideling like this until I turn it off). I find that if I rev it to 3000rpm for about 3 seconds the rev's seem to drop and stay at around 700/800rpm (normal idleing) sometimes 1100rpm.

Could this have something to do with the injectors?

Auto choke not working properly??

Or someone said something about cam belt/gears or something. I just heard the part of $600 to fix it and died. Apparently these should be done around the 100,000km mark.....

I soo ****en wish I could get streetmachines for some of this shit, It's just one thing after another and quite frankly, I'm ****en sick of it.

Any thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated. I can't get hold of my mechanic until the 28th so I thought I'd ask here first and see if anyone else has had this problem.

Thanks again.

Hmmm, not good :)

To me it sounds like your air flow meter is playing silly buggers.

You've got the same symptoms that other people have had when theirs have needed a good clean or replacement.

Apart from that, it could be your O2 sensor if it's going through lots of fuel, but the O2 sensor doesn't usually make the idle go wierd like what your experancing.....

Your right about the turbo, if it's stuffed (wheel spun off) it won't make any boost.

I hope you get it sorted.

J

Humm.

I recently had really bad fuel economy, but recently I just changed the O2 sensor. Haven't been able to test it out yet, but it appears to of fixed the problem!! woohoo!

Also, then the dickhead did my timing belt (under warranty) he adjusted it 2 teeth out on the exhaust cam. That caused it to ruff idle.

Thats what happend with me anyway. The other guys seem to be on track with the AFM. I heard to use the non-resedue carby cleaner on that.

Can I just by this stuff from supercheap?? I'm not game enough to clean anything on my car incase I break something :)

I'll get Andrew to try and clean it and see what happens. I might just wait to reset the ECU until the weekends over. I don't really wanna be caught fanging it when its double points, double fines.

How long do you have to fang it for when you reset the ecu??

Dont panic and do the little things first, give the AFM a squirt with some circuit board cleaner,

put some Nulon Injector cleaner in the tank, (the ones that has 2 hits in one bottle... use the whole thing in one full tank)

And how long has it been since you have changed plugs, wouldnt hurt to gap some cheap copper plugs and throw them in, my Iridiums are claimed to last 80,000kms but i notice an increase in economy and grunt (cleaner up high in the revs) with new plugs every 20,000kms.

I think my car is hard on plugs because it pings a little and i run jungle juice from time to time.

Maybe on the 28th of April when Gavin reopens I should take the car down to him and say "fix... Broken" :|

I'm not game enough to touch anything incase I stuff it up. I might get him to do a full service and change the plugs and get the injectors cleaned. I've only done like 2000k's on my normal service but :)

Damn cars... Why does it always break.

It's over a year now. It was at the end of march like the 23rd I think..

Theres nothing I can really do because even when there was a problem in the first few months of owning it, they didn't fix it. What's going to make them fix it now? I even rang the MAAQ or what ever it is, the ones that they get the warranty's through, and they said I could go through small claims court but I really don't think its worth having my car stolen and torched by the bikkie gang that owns streetmachines.

Speed sensor, abs, hicas, wires removed, speedo stopping (that problem I've given up on) ... diff leak, then I had to replace the diff (which cost me ubber amounts of $$) because the bearings went .. now the bushes need replacing (which in turn I need new tyres).. Aircon's ****ed itself... and probably the cam things... ERGH.. just one thing after another.

It might not sound a lot to you's but I'm not exactly rich so its a **** of a lot of money to me!

Dude thats buggered... fix whatever ya can to get it back to sorta normal then get rid of it. Ya much better off in a less costly car that lasts forever than a car that costs heaps to buy and costs even more to keep... with all the money you've had to fork out on fixing it, it coulda be fairly decently modded. I reckonz to get rid of it n look for another one, cos they are a lot cheaper nowdays. Best bet is to import one yaself, get hold of an importer (a good one) get friendly with them and then get them to help you purchase a car off an auction and let them import it for u. Thats what i did, and i havn't had one problem at all with my car and i got it for far less than what it would have sold for in the yard ($8,000 less!!).

Either way tho dude, think of what ya still gotta get fixed and if that much has happened already what else could come. Jus sounds like one of them cars that no matter what ya do or what ya spend ya gunna keep getting things with it. Dunno, but to me with the things that have gone wrong with it, it seems like its been driven hard overseas... ya probs didn't want to hear that but yeah... :S. Sorry dude.

That's what we are meant to get... Or should I say, normally get around 400. ATM i'm getting like around 300 (can't tell cause the odo isn't working)

I'll see what this problem is, if it's something big, I'll fix it and **** it off, if its jsut the AFM dirty (which could just well be it because we've been told the oil air filters (K&N) stuff around with your AFM's) so.. I'll clean that and see what happens. All these problems are from streetmachines. The diff's been ****ed since we got it, the wiring was broken when we bought it (which we didn't know till we got it data streamed) ...

ERGH.. I love it too much to get rid of it :)

"All these problems are from streetmachines"... thats what makes it sound like its been driven hard overseas dude. Not that common for a diff to go unless ya thrash it and it doesn't sound like u do, and for the hicas and that to be disconected is usually a sign of drifting?? Ah well best of luck with it dude hope it all pulls together.

    • Bushings are almost done. Check the date stamp 馃槀 these are likely the original bushings with 27 years and 243ks on them.     Was too dark to get a pic of the worst one.
    • Porous blocks are a known issue on something like a Porsche M96, it's not really something I've ever heard of on an RB26. It's possible what people thought was a "porous block" was really a cracked block that they just didn't spot the crack on.
    • This is a controversial subject really, the whole power vs fun thing I mean And this is the main reason I got back into a MX5 Of the last few notable daily cars I've owned whilst I have frequented SAU R33 GTS-t: fun, but because I'm a idiot I modified well past a reliable fun car and ended up hating it, although that was my fault because I tried to have a daily cruiser and race car all in one, the family called it the sometimes car, because sometimes it was working, sometimes it was broken, gladly sold it NB MX5: brilliant car, thrashed the Bejebus out of it, but, again, was stupid and deleted the air con, power steering and stripped the interior out, whilst still fun, and reliable, and super cheap on consumables, it was not a fun place to be going on long cruises, I did love it, but basically every family member hated going anywhere in it, sadly sold it 2015 WRX STI: soulless thing that looked like your average Kia sedan and had that horrible boxer engine with glass ringlands, the family did like it though, that thing was one of my stupidest purchases and I still regret it 2017 Toyota 86: 馃槳 if I didn't crash it, I would probably still have it, it was a fun little thing, even with that horrible boxer engine, the family did like it, the only reason I didn't get another 86, or, BRZ was the boxer engine, I should have learnt after owning the STI, but I'm a idiot VX SS: great cruiser, fits the whole family, and was fast as.....in a straight line, but a big fat thing, so no enjoyment throwing it around corners, the family was unimpressed with the whole boganness of if, but they did admit it was a comfy place to sit on long cruises As for the NC, I feel it is perfect for what I want, or need out of of a car, whether I'm cruising the Hwy, back roads, twisties or peak hour traffic, the Mrs doesn't mind driving it either, or cruising in it as well, although she does bump her head of the roof nearly every time she gets in, which is farking hilarious, and the kids love taking it for a thrash as well So basically, I've had constantly more fun, and way less headache and heartache, both on the track and on the street, in low powered cars,  go figure.....LOL One thing though, the Mrs has stated that the cams have made the exhaust sound much louder, which they have, but it doesn't bother me, in fact, I actually like it, but, to negate any future comments from the Minister for War and Finances I may look at some changes to the rear muffler set-up to drop the volume down a tad to appease her when we are out and about in it
    • You will need to extend the turbo inlet pipe somehow, which could/might be done with silicone/rubber pipe, but might need steelwork, depending on your intake. And you will need to change the pipework on the outlet in teh same way, but this is more likely to need steelwork.
