i just rang shannons to get a quote on my 1992 r32 gts-t, i am on my P's as i am only 2O and the guy i spoke to said unfortunatly it is over p/w ratio so therefore uninsurrable

i sed: are you serious i thought it was only the r33s and r34s

he said: nah it 6 cylinder turbo so its over power to weight ratio

i said: are you sure because im pretty sure its not

he said: ye if we insure you and you have an accident you wont be covered because its over,

youd be better going to justcar because it would cost you about 4 grand through us anyway

im like: yeah ok whatever mate

Im sure others on their P's have insurance with them, thats rediculous!!!!!!!

last time i checked it was 160kw/1290kg = 124.03

some models may vary but this guy had no idea

iIf anyone here has had experience with Shannons i would very much appreciate their expirences/addvice, how old you are, wat car you drive how much you pay anything relevent

:):woot:

i think i might see if i can speak to someone else

Don't tell them soneone declined you or they will be full of prejudice and are likely to do the same despite the (ridiculous) reasoning.

Just call again and if the same idiot answers the phone hang up and try again! No one will know! Looks like they should be careful who they are allowing to provide advice, whether they are adequately trained etc. Because stupid lies like that are a serious breach of code.

I've had insurance with Shannons for over six years with everything from the current 318i and the previous standard 300ZX, to modified 200SX, MR2 GT and my old tarmac rally GTR. I have always had only the best experience with them and would strongly suggest calling them back, if for nothing other than to talk to someone else.

I've never hear of them talking about power to weight ratios... but if you have motorsport involment or participated in any car club activies or track days that will interest them and help them in gaining confidence in your abilities.

:D:)

I'm with Shannons and highly recommend them. I've also had my contact get in touch with my mates and help them out too. Bottom line, get in touch with them and speak with them but bare in mind 18yr olds are going to have high premiums no matter what.

Good luck.

You mean they told the truth? omfg.. and you get angry about that? you'd rather they take your money and try to weasel out when you make a claim?

nice..

How is it the truth? The car is UNDER the power to weight limit in victoria, therefore there is no truth in what the guy said...

Even if the car was over the limit, they still insure it. If your car gets stolen from your driveway, you weren't driving it illegally. You can own a Ferrari on your p's, and insure it, so long as you pay the premium that comes with it. If it gets stolen from your driveway, its covered.

To add to the topic though I think Shannons are cracking down on young drivers with imports because of large claims recently as I tried to get my mrs as a driver and she is 18 and the said not till 20

Off topic your scaring me guys im on my red ps currently and i wanting when i pass my green ps to buy a turbo silvis s13.......What the fark ilive ins NSW can i drive one? i got my reds before all that bullshit law came out as i understand im excempt unless i am caught and suspended and have to re-apply?????

ON TOPIC RING SHANNONS ive herd good things about them.

Send a PM to _8OO5TED_ (Matt). He works for Shannons and can put you in touch with someone in the insurance quote section. You should be looked after much better. :)

Yeh i'm also thru them, paying just over 1k full Comp, with a excess of about $400, Also got my daily 79 Corolla thru them also on 3rd Party at about $100! All of this was insured when i was 24, but am now 25 and i live in SA, So all good here with the laws and so forth!

They really should have a deal with SAU, as there is quite a number of people thru them on here, they should have a discount, not that i can complain!

Are you in NSW or VIC? Vic has p/w laws, NSW bans all turbos. The person you got may be thinking of NSW rules.

I didn't think they insured anyone under 25 though?

Yeah thats what i thought too...

From the website...

Does your car/bike qualify for an online estimate?

We can provide you with a quote on-line if:

It is in good repair (except for Laid Up cover only)

It is for private use

You are the registered owner of the car/bike

All drivers/riders are aged 25 years or over

Sorry, we do not offer insurance if:

Your car/bike is used primarily for business use, or

Your car/bike has not been insured in the last 30 days, or

Any of the drivers/riders have lost their licence in the last 5 years, or

Any of the drivers/riders made more than 2 motor claims in the last 5 years or

Any of the drivers/riders have had more than 3 traffic infringements &/or offences (excluding parking fines) in the last 5 years

You are currently bankrupt or in receivership.

If you do not meet these criteria, please call us on 13 46 46 as we may still be able to help you.

Guess the last statement is actually true...

Matt aka 800sted (whatever) is definately the best person to speak to (give him a contact number so he can call you), but he's moved into a diff section afaik so he may ask you to PM his workmate. If you are eligible for a policy he's definately the person that will be happy to give it to you.

Deluxe: give Matt your contact number and details eg rego/address etc and ask him to have a look at your policy. Definately worth the time.

Matt is 'da man' :)

Also do you guys know they have 'laid up' cover? My car is currently in the garage in pieces and it's only costing me $30 a month or thereabouts to insure it. I'm covered for theft, vandalism etc but it's just not covered if I drive it. Saving cash without having to cancel my policy is pretty good.

    • Appreciate the feedback. It is street car, but not a daily. Last week I got a quote from a good exhaust shop for a decat, one which is bolt-on, bolt-off to be easily replaceable. I got quoted for around €150. I usually do push the motor, but I wasn't in this case to make sure that no damage is done until I get the cat sorted. I think it's best to also ask the exhaust shop for the other option and see what they can do. If (big if) I were to decat though, would it be best to tune the car or would the stock ECU handle it? As far as I know, the stock ECU is not tunable and that would require additional purchases.
    • As above, definitely bash it or get it replaced with a high flow unit.
    • get some flares on them, or wider guards haha
    • Another question sorry, what stainless do u use in the turbo external WG plumb back piping? Is it 321, 316 or 304?
    • Right, its been a while for updating this car, but I made some small but important progress today. In the end I bought an Ecutek dongle from the Australian distributor Tunehouse (for local hardware support) but have gone with a remote tune from Racebox in the US (because they have done millions of these, and I could not find any tuner where I could access the tune anyway as they are all password locked). The App is reasonably easy to work with, but the PC software reminds me of Haltech's ECU Manager that you need to use with the Plat Pro ECUs, it is a nightmare.  Anyway, I sent the details over, got back a tune file and a request for data logs. I finally got a chance to access a private test track today as they want redline logs in 3rd and 4th, and have sent them back for the first round of reviews. The main difference in the tune is going from 1.0 (stock) to 1.3 bar (19psi), although I'm sure is a lot of other stuff in the background. Keeping in mind this is a dead stock car with 125,000klm, this is what the App's performance test claimed: Before After Interesting to note that both 400m tests had the same terminal speed (158klm/h) but different ETs. And no, the speed limiter seems to be higher than that at 186kl/h. Summary of the key logged parameters for the 3rd and 4th gear runs were: Those little turbos were certainly whizzing at 200,000rpm+.  Also I'm really not that excited about oil pressure 55psi at redline so I think I'll go thicker than 5w30 (nissan recommend 0w20....) and see if that improves it. Other than that (and the big boost spike....) everything looks good as a start to me.
