As I've somehow been bitten by the mod bug in the past 2 days I've decided that my power goal for a nice car to drive on the streets and occasionally on the track would be ~250rwkw.

Been doing abit of research and from what I gather this what I have/will have - will these be enough for a reliable 240-260rwkw output figure?

- Hi flow turbo

- Turbo back exhaust

- K&J Core FMIC

- EBC

- SS intake + pod + cai

- Bosch 040 (enough juice?)

- Sard FPR

- 440cc Injectors (big enough?)

- Z32 AFM

- Aftermarket Management (either remap or PFC)

My car has done 38,000kms, has an RB25DET Neo and manaul transmission. Completely standard internally and I plan to keep it that way. Also a few questions:

1. The 9-puck single face Exedy clutch seems to be the right clutch for this application? How much are people paying for this kit (pressure plate + clutch face + bearings).

2. Will I run into any gearbox/diff/driveshaft problems at this power? Taking into account that I don't really do any drifting and always take it easy on the box - no bang-bang shifting.

The answer is tuning, keep the knock below 20 at all times, the A/F ratios no leaner than 12 to 1 and don't increase the standard RPM limit. Tip, buy a PFC now before they run out.

No idea about clutch, never used one of those.

Drivetrain will be fine.

Regarding clutches: what would be a daily driver friendly clutch that can easily handle 250rwkw? Would the 9-puck I'm after seem like the best choice? I previously had a Exedy heavy duty organic clutch in the GTIR and it was very easy to drive, but I'm assuming a clutch like this is not enough for the power I'm after in the GTT?

Prior to this it did have a 3-puck Nismo-style one in the GTIR and while it was hard to press on the clutch pedal I did get use to it after a while, so anybody in Sydney with a 9-puck want to let me see what their clutch is like? :P

Adam, are you suggestion I get 480cc or saying you have 480's? The 440cc I've worked out to be able to give approx 250-260rwkw at 90% duty cycle. (440x 6/5 x 0.9 x 0.75 x 0.7 = 250rwkw).

Tomei Poncams are also cards depending on budget. How much was the Jim Berry special, could you PM with the details and price of the clutch?

That’s a conservative calculation, the 440 cc = 440 bhp includes a 20% allowance for spare duty cycle for acceleration and cold run enrichment. So 440 bhp / 1.34 = 328 kw – 65 kw losses = 263 rwkw. Up the fuel pressure from 34-36 psi (standard) to 45 psi and make sure you don’t use more than 10% acceleration enrichment and you can get to 320 rwkw pretty safely.

Coilpacks? Might want to replace them with Splitfires if not already...

Fuel Pump; spend that extra bit more and get a 044 setup + surge tank - get you set for the track and will support more power later on. Else buy a Nismo Pump or Tomei Pump

E-manage seems to be a good way to go these days with the PFCs getting rare as dino eggs...

Link it up with a E01 EBC and you have quite a tuneable system that controls largely everything...

Else you can always go for Haltech, Microtech, Motec or HKS :D

nicks performance clutches in brisbane make a solid but driveable clutch. Not to badly priced either, 4 of the guys around here including me run clutches by them and we all think theyre excellent. two of the guys are running 350-380rwhp and it seems to handle it fine

Because larger injectors use more fuel?

Isn't it the case that the larger the injector the less 'fine' tuning you can do: Read: At idle and low rpm work the minimums aren't as precise?

Because you buy injectors that suit IMO.

Why get 600 sards? They are not a "bolt on", they need collars and rooting around.

The Nismo are a bolt in job, and will supply enough fuel for 260rwkw.

IMO - its the best choice of injectors.

As for the coilpacks - wait. Your stock ones might be 100% ok. Mine were, as many others.

Rather than spend the $600, get the car going, if you have miss firing, then spend the coin on the splitfires.

OnGsTa - if you wanna save even more cash, dont get a FPR/coil pcaks yet.

With your injector choice, there is no need for an FPR, the stock reg is perfectly fine.

Spend the money on a batter radiator and oil cooling as injected_flow pointed too. That will serve you better on a track car

there clutches are great im using one in my rb25 cefiro, great feel and iv never had slip.. from what i member good price too, im running 1100lb pretty sure.. think bout it people speakin with experiance with the product is good thing not people sayin they heard from there cousins mates sister

Thanks guys, appreciate the feedback on the clutches. Could you guys post up what you paid for it so I can get a general idea of what they cost?

Abo Bob - the 440cc I have aren't Nismo, they're Dephi and are apparently direct fit replacement.

R31 Nismoid - I don't plan on buying coilpacks yet, I'll try the cleaning the carbon rod and silicon method first before I decide to fork out $600 odd. The fuel reg is already in my posession so I might hang onto it to see if its needed when the tune is done, if not I might just sell it off.

Wessa02 & 2gceffy: which clutch are you referring to? The twin plates or heavy duty ones?

Sorry Paul, incorrect.

The JDM thing is a myth. S15 manual spec are 480cc, auto spec are 370cc. Doesn't matter where the car was sold; I did the parts number checks before getting a set.

BTW, this sort of injector would only fit with a R33 spec. SK has posted on this topic previously.

I believe the original question related to a Neo.

    • You know, that is exactly the thing that I was thinking a coupe of hours ago. I even had a plan for a meme, involving one big one, another big one, and the Old El Paso girl saying "¿por que no los dos?"

    • 2 does "sort of" applies, maybe......but looking at what parts would be needed for the swap to get engineered, registered, and insured, and basically that's everything under the car, the modifications the make it legal would be problematic and horrendously expensive, all for a street car that just cruises around and hits a few twisty roads on the weekends Also, from looking at the NSW rules and Regs, with all modifications that is required just to make the car safe and not twist itself to pieces, and then actually get registered for street use, may still be impossible nowadays As for 1, when you add in a fresh engine, fresh transmission, rear cradle and diff, tailshaft, suspension, brakes, cooling, and all the other fabrication required, your probably looking at up to $100k to do it right, all for a 20 year old MX5 that is over engineered and you would never be able to actually use the power it has on the street, much like your beastie, which I love, but you actually track that thing and can use all of its powers in anger, in a safe environment  Hell, the old Bogan Cruise Ship had more power than I could use on the street, and in hindsight, I went a bit silly on that thing, it didn't really need the 500hp it had for what I actually used the car for, it was fun, but basically unusable on the street if you value your licence  As for cams, yeah, I'll probably book it in for them to get installed and tuned soonish, like next month after MX5 Mania are back at work....... and yes, I've already sent a email to bin the turbo quote and quote instead to install cams and a new Fluidampr balancer that will suit the 2.5 better than the OEM 2.0 balancer that is swapped over for the 2.5 install, as the balancer needs to get pulled to time the cams it's a while your in there sort of thing I did think a bit about flex fuel for a laugh, but being na, and no where really around locally anymore to get E85, I've binned that idea, so no sweet sweet corn smells are set for the car I wish E85 was more of a standard fuel, it's better for the environment, better for tuning, plus that sweet sweet smell we all love As for fitting in the family, that's not needed, as everyone in the family already owns a car that can seat 5 humans comfortably enough, the MX5 is "my toy" As for buying a car that is already built, nah, I would rather pick and choose my parts, I enjoy the process, and in the big picture, the additional cost is well worth the enjoyment, and the occasional frustration, I get out of doing it, albeit with other people spinning the spanners, and me, just paying the invoice 🤣
