It's that time of the year again - time to guess who is going to win Wheels Car of the Year! My money is on the new Commodore, since Wheels hasn't stopped raving about it for several months. But admittedly there are a few others will a real possibility of victory, including the Mazda CX-7 and Toyota Aurion.

I had to group a couple of the options together as there are more eligible cars than there are slots available on the poll generator! These cars will obviously be judged seperately at WCOTY.

For the record, the following new models were not eligible for WCOTY this year:

- Alfa Romeo Brera (Sales)

- BMW Z4 Coupe (Sales)

- Ferrari 599 GTB FIorano (Sales)

- Ford Fiesta (Insufficent Change)

- Jaguar XK (Sales)

- Kia Carnival (Safety)

- Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 (Sales)

- Lamborghini Gallardo spyder (Sales)

- Lotus Exige S (Sales)

- Mitsuibishi Colt Ralliart (Too Similar)

- Nissan Tiida (Safety)

- Proton Savvy (Safety)

- Subaru Liberty (Insufficient Change)

- Volkswagen Golf R32 (Too Similar)

Cars can be ineligible if they don't have a lap-sash centre belt (safety), if they don't sell in large numbers (sales), if they are too similar to the previous model (Insufficient Change) or if they are too similar to existing models in the range (Too Similar).

Woops, it appears that the Alfa Romeo 159 missed the poll. Oh well, I don't think it will win anyways  If you think it will win, then feel free to flame my incompetence!

I might not be a fan of the VE or think its the top contender, certainly not the lowest on the list either, but they never shut up about the damn thing...

Few advertising $$$ for the magazine doesnt hurt either so I reckon it'll win.

Toyota Aurion probably should win, seems too be a well put together machine in terms of design and value for money.

Pity theyre not RWD or AWD, they'd then take a bite out of the Subaru and huge chop into the large-car market.

The above is some past winners , just because u win a wheels car of the year award doesn`t mean u have a good car anybody who has driven a VN will agree with me i think

unfortunatley i think that the ve will win

the territory winning in 2004 is the primary reason that dad bought one. he was looking at a toyota prado or a (puke) ssang-yong. but (thankfully) he bought a territory (thank you wheels!!)

Ditto on the VE. Wheels been comparing latest Mercs and Beamers to the calais, and they always claim it comes out on top in every area. They had a whole magdevoted to it, and another mag half wheel half holden devoted, not to mention the 2007 wheels commodore calender. holden have paid wheels some big bucks, the ve will win

The VE will win, and rightly so.

VN commodore did win in 88, but rewind to back then if you are old enough and think about the market/car in that scenario. Then look at the sales in that year of the car versus anything else and tell me I'm wrong :P

    • Sounds like it is rotational in the driveline. CV? Tailshaft CB? Also.....didn't you just pay to have that bit painted and put on the car?
    • Yeah, when I dialled my idle down, given how much time I spent idling at the lights in traffic on my daily commute, the effect on overall fuel consumption was absolutely noticeable.
    • Emissions, fuel consumption, heat, noise, etc. most likely.
    • For me at least the reason why it bothers me is because it's indicative of a deeper problem. And that will nag at me forever. Especially because I have tailpipe emissions testing + evap leak testing every 2 years.
    • WELP. I went to the track, and I suppose it went okay because any time you can drive home is okay. You may notice the car is not on the circuit in this picture. It was about 35C day out in Benalla which means the track was approximately the surface of the sun, probably. Good things, car did not overheat but it _was_ warmer than when I had done track days in similar heat before, I think, I'm not sure - I can't quite remember. Coolant got to ~105 via the ECU after 20-30 minutes of belting it in said heat. Oil got up to 145C in one instance which is pretty crazy due to oil cooler. Pressures were fine. I seem to remember this not getting quite so high before the vents. More HMMMM'ing to be done. On the subject of HMMM'ing, can anyone identify the sounds in the video below, you will know which ones I mean: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uj3BkI2cbTc I included some 'normal' sound as a reference for the first minute or so. The microphone in this instance was where the license plate is. It stopped working later in the day which is why my "best example of a lap video (not produced)" had internal audio - Isn't hearable from inside the car. I don't mean the chirping of the un-bedded/badly bedded track brakes which you can only hear while braking... Thoughts, brains trust?
