hey lads, took me car in for a compression test and i have suspect piston rings, just wondering if anyone has had to get them changed before and how much would a set of rings be for my skyline. i was also thinkin abo ut just buying new pistons as well, if anyone has any advice on what to do i would be glad to her from ya. cheers

If the pistons are in good condition, there is no real reason to replace them. Unless... if the rings have damaged the bore, you will definitely need pistons, because you will require a re-bore. But you won't know that until you pull it all apart.

You should be able to buy just the rings, but if you buy pistons, you will get a set of rings.

While you have it all apart, it's wise to also replace, at least, the big-end bearings, and maybe the crank bearings.

You are not going to pull the engine out and strip it just to replace the rings, they are very cheap though about $220 from Nissan , cheaper aftermarket, pistons about $700-800 from Nissan, cheaper aftermarket , gasket set $300 from Nissan, timming belt $100 , water pump $130, bearings $250 , oil pump $500.

Then you have all the machining and labour to r+r the engine, strip and re-assemble. All up from about $6k up , depending on what parts you use and what you find when you strip the engine.

First its going to cost you heaps in labour and secondly if the rings are stuffed more than likely a lot of other stuff will need replacing as well.

A full rebuild is on the cards for you

thanks lads, i hope i dont have to go as far as a rebuiled, ive only got about $3000 to spend on the engine, hopefully its only the rings and bearings i change cuz im keen on the vielside body kits. anyway appreciate it

cheers

I have to agree with the others, you don't want to strip the engine down (which you'll have to do to change the rings), and only do the rings.. ! That'd be a waste....

I would NEVER replace just the rings, how are you going to know that your bores are ok... When the bores are bored and honed, I believe they put this crosss hatch type pattern into the bore so it files the new rings down a bit to help them bed in. This to me is a critical part of bedding in new rings.

This is just my opinion but I have just rebuilt my own engine myself, I got the block professionally done and while they were doing there thing, they found 4 cracks in the block. They fixed the problem but this is a prime example as to why you should never just strip a block down to change rings.. Get it checked while it's apart.

Keeping in mind that if you get your block bored, you'll need to buy oversized pistons... then you need to know if it's been bored before. Get them to measure your bores because you'll need to know what size pistons to get.. I'm guessing it hasn't been rebuilt before so probably go for 20 thou oversize...

Anyway, that is just the tip of the iceberg mate. You really need to do your homework, it's not just a matter of saying, "I want to change my rings". I've learnt so much rebuilding my engine so if you want to ask me for anything, I will do my best to answer them and help you out...

I don't pretend to know everything but please take into consideration what I have said..

GOOD LUCK!! :-)

    • Means something is not set up right, tune/calibration related.
    • Finally replaced the previous temporary mesh indicator surrounds (temporary was the last 10+ years 😂) with a 3D printed GTR style version for the front indicators. I think it looks a lot nicer than the old setup and at least the indicators now point in the correct direction rather than angled off. Needed a little bit of tweaking to deal with the intercooler piping but got there in the end. Old and new photos below.
    • It's weird to me that you say this because I'm pretty sure locals with relatively standard standalone tunes (boost/barometric compensated alpha-N) still have driveability issues when they pop intercooler hoses. Maybe with enough data I can just train some kind of model that spits out an expected grams/cyl given every sensor input except MAF like what FCA did with their Pentastar 3.6 ECU logic. Basically stock everything. The main motivation honestly is to have a sensor that can be a decent baseline source of truth. In scenarios you're describing obviously it won't work every time but it seems to me the number of corner cases that exist in MAF load is maybe not as severe and difficult to manage vs ITB alpha-N with some MAP/barometric compensation.
    • What are your plans for your blow off valves? Purely plumb back? How soft will the spring in them be? AFM can be tricky to get super smooth and nice, especially depending on the rest of the system, and then can be very easily upset if something slightly changes. IE, even if you run recirc blow off valves, you could still see issues getting it to behave at certain load points as turbos might start to spool, but you release the throttle but it's not enough pressure to crack the bov open to recirc, and you can end up with reversion which can cause double metering, and hence dumping of fuel into the system, and stalling the engine.   If you're going to run a map sensor for closed loop boost control from the ECU, what makes you want to keep the AFM?
    • It's not bad, it's just not flexible. And say if you have any leaks between the MAF and plenum, well then your load axis goes out the window. Here's a real world scenario, I blew off an intercooler hose last track day, as the clamp decided to Bluetooth itself somewhere. Still continued to do 2 laps and drive it to the pub for a couple of beers then home. Good luck doing that with a MAF setup
