Thinking Of Buying A Porsche Boxster

Hi All,

Thinking about my next car. I don't necessarily want a car with loads of power. Would like something that feels good to drive and every review I have read suggests that the boxster is a great drive.

You can get an early model boxster for around $50 large.

My only concerns would be the drop in power (the 2.5 litre boxster generates 150kw at the fly). Currently my skyline is generating around 155kw at the wheels so there may not be a huge difference as I am led to believe that Porsche tend to understate their power figures if anything . Also concerned about ongoing costs.

What do you guys think. Is there anyone who has driven one and how much more is ongoing maintenance than say the average car?

Cheers

I heard a term they use on the UK top gear show Porsche Boxster are a Poorman's Porsche.

Still if you have enough money to buy and maintan one i said why not its would be hell alot nice to drive than a R33.

If i had the money i would get one

This is actually a good time to buy them second hand with the new 987 boxsters been introduced for nearly two years now there are plenty 986s on the market. and they have depreciated to a point that you wont lose much money should you decide to sell the car later.

Important point to consider is try to look for a 3.2l boxster S, these are into the low 60k mark nowadays. with 185kw its performance should be similar to a turbo skyline.

Yeah, I'd be looking at a Boxster S or nothing. The standard just doesn't have the grunt.

I rented a Tiptronic Boxster about a year go for a few days. Great handling, average power, ratshit gearbox.

I was up in Cairns, and driving it up the side of the escarpment (with your typical mountain road switchbacks) was great. The brakes are amazing, and the car handles really well. Definitely more handling than power.

The thing is, do you want to brand name or do you want the driving experience? If its the latter and you can handle not making any power, give some serious thought to buying an NC MX5 soft top. It'll be a crapload cheaper to run, and just as much fun to drive. It'll also be brand new, or with demonstrator mileage.

I took a NC for a test drive, and to be honest there's almost nothing in it between the MX5 and the Boxster. There might be a bit more rear end grip in the Boxster, but there's not enough power to make that a major issue.

I wouldn't take that as gospel. That boxter is absolutely shagged. I used to work for that rental company and have driven that particular boxter extremely hard, just like everyone else who rented it. It doesn't get looked after as well as it should, I mean there isn't even a porsche dealer in cairns.

At the end of the day, its a rental car. I wouldn't judge any car I was looking at buying by driving a rental.

forget the boxter. if you've got $50 or $60K then there is only one car to be looking at if you want porsche. and that's 70s/80s 911. they are magic. they may not be as fast. or handle as well. but the noise, the look and the feel of them is hard to beat. be a man. do tha right thing.

911 all the way. like they say in risky business there is no substitute. (and yes I realise he wasn't driving a 911, but the point is clear).... as mud.

911.

911.

911.

or run the risk of me calling you a massive shirt lifter for life.

yeah, that's more like it. but only thing I'd change is skip the soft tops all together. go hard top, and thank me later. also switch the colour from white to black and we have a weiner. i mean winner.
