You can't go wrong with a boxter. Beautiful cars. But just make sure you're willing to accept the stigma associated with being a Porsche Boxter driver.

What about the previous generation Mazda MX5 SP? Turbocharged for 155kw if I remember rightly, Just make sure it's a genuine SP, and not the wimpy later model turbos with only 120-odd kw. Can be had for under $30k, so you should buy two of them.

What about a Lotus Elise? So much cooler than the boxter, and handles just as well (if not better), and it will be cheaper. If you can stretch to a 2ZZ engined model (or even an Exige ), that's the go, otherwise you'll have to settle for the inferior K-series engine.

Or you could go really extreme and get a Caterham Super 7, or pre-order the Arial Atom 2 (due mid-2007 in Aust, apparently).

What about a Honda S2000? More powerful than a boxter and much cheaper. And it has VTEC, yo. Probably not as fluid as the boxter or elise in the handling department, though...

Dunno if you could stretch to a Mercedes SLK32 AMG. It'd be a rocketship, but hardly the refined balanced handler that the boxter and elise are.

If it doesn't have to be a roadster, how about BMW M3, Mazda RX7 Spirit R, Nissan 350Z, Nissan R34 GTR, Mitsu EVO IX, E-Series HSV GTS, Porsche 964 911, early model Honda NSX, etc.

If you can get through all those other temptations and still want a Boxter, then clearly your decision was already made!

P.S - A Porsche Boxter is the cheapest of all the porsche's, i see ppl drive them and think that they are king d!ck but i feel sorry for them. Its like ordering the salad at McDonalds....why bother

I would have bought a boxster if the 350z didn't exist....the 350 is a top road car, great fun, great torque, impractical, looks good etc etc.

That or the new mx5.

The rest of the cars in the class are crap:

bmw m4 - horrible wallowy drive. the big engine one is good but handling is poor

slk - auto only forget it. and the slowest and most expensive of them

honda s2000 - brilliant fun on a race track at 9500rpm. gutless the rest of the time

audi tt - hahahahah they crack me up. 110k for an understeering, underpowered fwd biased 4wd hahahahaha

convertible sports cars are a great daily driver

*edit* sorry I forget beer bitches' choice, an old 911....overpriced, underpowered posers car. You have to be kidding. Imaging paying to maintain one of those, may as well buy a 308 ferrari

My fav car ever is a porsche so personally even though it is a boxster i would buy it any way.

it may not have as much power as a skyline but it will be much nicer to drive plus u would get more looks just cause of the brand name

everything that i have read about a porsche they all say its a good car with plenty of power eitherway

but i guess its ur decision i would get it but thats just me.

^^^mr keets???

easy choice?? that is a hard freggin choice...

a second hand hairdresser car, or a brand new even gayer hairdresser car...

the new mx-5...pffft....waste of money...unless ur a chik

Outed on the boards....mmmm *puts hairdrier down and picks up ratchet to look more butch*

I love the look of the older pooches but I already have one wallet destroyer. Plus I see alot of these 80s models with the "update" title in the sales blather...Looks like a panel beater found a couple of bent ones, ripped the panels off them and hey presto! a pile of crap no one trusts. If its an old porsche then i'd go a clean low(ish) ks 930, at least you will have some cred, a quick ride and a decent resale.

Anyone who knows anything about cars would not respect a Boxter driver!! I know I don’t, I wouldn't look twice at them, I view them in the same light as a Toyota Corolla....but if you want to delude yourself that you own a Porsche and that is impressive then it’s your prerogative!!

If you wanted to do burnouts and nothing else then maybe buy the HSV... lol

Ive driven the Porsche Boxster S and all i can say is it has no balls what so ever. The above v8 would sh*t on it in a straight line(not in anything else). Brakes, pretty damn good, handling very good, interior is really nice and exterior they look fairly good but what i couldn't understand is driving a porsche and bein able to be chopped by a normal Ford/Holden v8.

They are over-priced and under-powered in my opinion!

Regardless of how much of a poor mans porsche it is...A porsche is a porsche. You can always say yeah i own a porsche. But remember just because you can afford to buy a porsche doesnt mean you can afford to run one!

it may not have as much power as a skyline but it will be much nicer to drive plus u would get more looks just cause of the brand name :P

actually u'd get the wrong kind of attenion...u'd get ppl lookin at u thinkin...'has that guy borowed his g/f's convertible?'

Don't worry, I'm sure they don't look twice at your car either.

Sure, a lot of posers drive Boxsters, but that doesn't make them a bad car. In fact from all reports they're a bloody awesome car with a bad image...

It is a Porsche, and it is an impressive car, just not to you :P

Me? I'd love to own one, but I am a MASSIVE Porsche fan, and I respect it's heritage and think Porsche build the best cars in the world. If I was in the market for a convertible/roadster I'd buy one for sure. I'd prefer a 930/964 but hey, different horses for different courses.

Don't worry, I'm sure they don't look twice at your car either.

actually they usually have a nice long view of my tail lights.....

boxter is a ghey porsche , get an older 911 or similar . atleast its a real porsche and able to hold up its own on the track and not just look like it could

if you have a porka and its not a 911 then you need to rethink your priorities...

for instance if you have a porka and its a Cayenne may god have mercy on your soul (or lack of soul)... if you have a porka and its a boxter then your just like my sisters ex bf, and he was a MAJOR dick (he was a pom so its not all his fault)!

forget the boxter. if you've got $50 or $60K then there is only one car to be looking at if you want porsche. and that's 70s/80s 911. they are magic. they may not be as fast. or handle as well. but the noise, the look and the feel of them is hard to beat. be a man. do tha right thing.

An early 80's Porker - terminal oversteer & massive maintenance bills. They are not even that quick. Nice for a bit of nostalgia & a gread sounding motor, but there isn't much more to them than that.

Why has no one mentioned an M3 BMW yet?

I've been looking around that pricepoint lately at a few things, Boxster S was the first thing on the list. Becomes dangerous as you go from looking at a 986 to a 987, non S to S, and then the budget blows out, then its not too much more for a 996 911... and the whole process falls over.

Don't buy an old 911 unless you are into astronomical maintenance costs. And they are not quite so good to punt around thesedays when you look at the alternatives in terms of what you get for your dollar to drive on the road.

Some interesting options thrown around in this thread otherwise!

Man its hard to know what you'd really want, but if u want something that has some punch and doesnt look too bad id consider this.... 0-100km/h in 5.4secs

and market value $50k - $20k in 5.4 seconds as well :)

Having bitten my tounge until now...

To old mate about the M3, its been mentioned 5 times at least that I read.

To the guy saying its like buying a macdonalds salad. It isnt dude, its like going to the most expencive place in town and ordering the salad, its still going to be 'just' a salad, but its going to taste better, get presented to you better, and you wont have to line up in a que for 20mins to get served by some fat 14yo snotty nosed kid.

To the guy that said a porsche is a porsche, 100% correct mate! Only trouble is if your at a party and say 'ooh I have a porsche' then someone else pikes up 'I have one too, new 997 turbo, whats yours?' you have to answer honestly.

Duncan is right tho, kinda... See this guy is looking for a partcular car. So yeah the 350z might be good, but you need to be compairing the convertable version to the porka. Which isnt as good am I not correct?

So to everyone saying what about this this and this. Well the only cars in this market are the boxster, clk, and mayybe the m3 convertable. If it was my money, and I HAD to have one of those 3, I know which was I would be going. And 99% chance the rest of you would to.
