* EPA emissions test -> passed

* Back to EPA for exhaust retest and he checked I had the stock box back in

* EPA threatened me with a $5k fine & court apperance if I get caught again

have you changed the stock box filter, to like i better flowing one, like k&N which are common, most jap companys make panel filters as well as pods if you were after something more big brand. You could also ask the epa about getting a CAI box made up for your pod, most people are getting away with pods like that.

What about Qld does anyone know?

I have been told that they are illegal and I've also been told that they are legal, then again I've been told by my local inspection centre that they have never heard of a Pod filter.

I don't think they now what they are talking about half the time, it all depends on who you get and what they now or what they think they know

Why dont you keep the stock box in there, replace the filter with a k&n. secure the front air intake to it if you dont have one and then direct a similar cold air feed to the other side of the lid that runs to the front of the car. that should improve the throttle response a little bit and the car shouldn't feel all that sluggish with the extra colder air.

I have heard that in VIC you are allowed 1 intake mod, so you can have a pod but it must NOT be made of foam and it must also NOT be an oiled type pod - so any brand fitting this description is ok in Victoria - this info was passed on by fellow members who have spoken directly with the authorities!

btw FMIC [aftermarket] and boost increase are INTAKE mods...

Secoh, its the same as 33 / 34 too in that case - the filter number is actually A360 and they are as common as muck! VN>VR commo is same too I believe, they are readily available throughout Victoria and I assume Oz too. Pulsar N14 / N15 and Pintara TRX are also the same...the list goes on...Nissan even sell them brand new!

Dremen, did you find out why the pod filter was illegal? Was it due to emissions or noise pollution or something else?

Either way, the solution is simple. Get a cold air box from somewhere like UAS or Hills Motorsports (Hills do a much better one than UAS, but costs about double) and put the pod inside that.

The reason why I ask if your defect notice was due to emissions or noise is because a pod in a box still makes a lot of noise so it still might be illegal for noise reasons.

Oh, for anyone that finds the flat filter to flow better than their pod, it was because your pod was sucking in a lot of hot air from your engine bay. I had the same problem, but I got a UAS box and it fixed the power right up again.

tell this to cops and they will go..pppffff yah right and slap you for a fine for being a smart arse. The best thing to do is get it on paper of vicroads with a act number or something that they could check. Then you can tell them what ya think. Lolz :D

I havent spoken to the EPA directly but a couple of the Melbourne guys have and say that 1 intake mod is allowed...*goes and looks for thread* here's one: laws on mods in vic?

Or just call the EPA to get it from the horses mouth!

    • This is a story of my life things, I learned eventually (thanks to someone calling me out) that my enthusiasm for discussing and sharing ideas that it came across as arrogance and I'm like... WTF?!    One thing I'm pretty sure I justifiably pride myself on is knowing that everyone will have things they can teach you, and you're always going to find out that something you think you know turns out wrong - you just don't know what it is until you get there.   Just the bursting enthusiasm that comes with ADHD when you hit something that gives you dopamine dumps can come across like you think everyone else is wrong or don't matter. But yeah, I'm a software engineer by trade and also do tuning in weekends and 100% have long had a reputation for  quickly making connections when resolving problems or forming solutions that I've sometimes had to take people form a long walk from start to end to explain how I ended up where I did when it's seemed "too simple" when I've stated my initial case, and had the "WTF" type reaction when they've realised how much was actually considered haha.   My reward is that I get all the curly problems thrown at me.
    • Wives never seem to find things funny. Especially when they're trying to sleep, and you've found the new funniest thing ever. I've never seen someone be able to get try and be cranky with me, while they're holding back fits of laughter... 😛   Also, I tell mine it's payback anyway. She has BiPolar. So the household can get quite emotionally wild at times 😛
    • I'm not up to date on the latest, but for basic modifications like pod filter, lower springs etc you can get a modification permit at the time of inspection.  For more serious modifications you will need engineering.  Intercoolers used to fall into the mod permit rule but its been a long while since i looked it up.   Either way you will be able to get it registered, just a case of $300 vs $3k .
    • Hi everyone! I’m the new owner of a 1996 R33 GTS-T, I’ve purchased this car over from Queensland and brought it to Western Australia and I’ve found that there is a hole cut out in the engine bay for the FMIC that enters into the wheel well (fender liners are in the boot). For anyone that has had to get their car over the PITS here, will this be a major issue?
    • Yeah I've spotted this one too, whenever it's lotto superdraw week and I'm browsing car sales dot com for my new ride They must be dreaming, maybe it's worth 150k for the link to Brock?
