Question About Re-importation...

A mate of mine found a car that he is interested in.

But the dilemma is that it's overseas.

The car is an austrlian delivered wrx.

To my knowledge the car hasn't been registered or complied overseas.

He wants to know if he could re-import it here without getting it complianced etc.

If the car was complied overseas, would he be able to re-comply it back in aus?

If it has to get re-complianced here, how much would it cost for this to be done?

Although i am 99% sure the car hasn't been complied overseas, just wanted to know this information incase it has.

I think dotars would be your best bet as for it to come in, irrispective of its previous existance here, it would have to fall under an importation rule or have left on a specific permit to enable it to return (I would have thought). That said there could be a special clause for cars that compete outside of Oz but call Oz home. I saw a Vic plated car at the Gumball in 2005 in London so if it was genuine, it must get back in somehow.

Any more details on the car/location/reason?

If it still has all of the Australian compliance plates and remains ADR/Vicroads/etc. compliant, I can't think of a reason why it couldn't be easily reregistered. In fact, you could probably do it without even saying that it had been out of the country.

Customs/Clearance asked to see my import papers when mine came in which had to include my passport (with evidence that I was eligible to bring the car in). I had a list of things to show them before they released the car.

I should have explained further, in that I meant once it's in the country, if you get a RWC on it, then VicRoads doesn't need to know that it has been O/S.

The main reason he wanted that specific one was because of the price. It was relatively cheap for the same car on carsales etc, and cheap in comparison to redbook valuations.

The car is a MY99 wrx, apparently it's an sti buy we checked and it's not possible, because the car was manufactured in march of 99, and the sti's made in march of 99 are two doors, and this car is a four door.

The car is apparently located in Helinski in Finland.

We have been emailing the owner, and she has been very good at replying etc, but for some reason, I think it's a scam. My mate hopes it isn't but there is always a possibility.

Hopefully this is the case, but doesn't vicroads or anyone have to have approved exportation, and therefore they would already know if the car has been overseas or not.

I am pretty sure blackrex is right, it is already complied so all you need is import approval under one of the dotars schemes (SEVS, 1988 or earlier, personal import or race/rally).

If blackrex is right, and vicroads doesn't need to know if the car has been overseas or not, then why would i still need import approval? or am i thinking about this in the wrong way...

There are alot of scams on the net, from people advertising cars that are not theirs. Most these scams come from Europe, so DO NOT TRANSFER ANY MONEY TILL OWNERSHIP IS PROVEN. The Australian authorities are not interested in chasing up such matters. They give some story of going overseas and taking their car there only to find that they can't rego it, because it is too costly to comply or meet emisions, so they need to send it back to Australia at a really cheap price, rather than crushing it.

Ask for the following items and chase them up

- VIN number

- Previous Rego number, when in Australia

- Previous address where the car was registered to

- Updated photos with a a4 page stating current date and a sentance of your creation.

- Any other relavent info.

My mate was almost con'ed till i told him to do the above and wrote the letter to the seller. The guy replied with BS, saying that Ebay has recommend not to give any paper work till money was transfered, etc. Also mentioned that his money was safe as ebay would refund it if the car didn't show up, etc. We then reported it to ebay, the ad was removed and the user baned.

We figured that there are alot of scams going round the net so just for precautions i made sure that my mate didn't give out his name or adress as the owner suggested.

We already got the VIN number emailed to us, but we are unsure what to do with this.

I have just emailed her in regards to the previous rego plates number etc.

I can't get any more pics because apparently the car is already in a crated shipping container, ready to be shipped.

What other relevant info do you think i should request??

I have asked if she could bring the car into aus, and let me inspect it etc. then i would hand over the cash.

Also, not sure about here but when my car left the UK, I had to apply for permission to export which essentially took care of degrestering etc and ensuring I didnt receive reminders for tax for it.

This was one of the only hiccups in it leaving the UK which is another story.

If that has to be done here then they would be aware. Just something to think about although it looks like Al is right with the Scam unfortunately.

Just thought i'd add that i got a reply to my email,

and suprise suprise the car was "apparently sold"

I asked the previous rego etc. in that email, and when she couldnt come up with an answer, just use an excuse.
