$1200 for a new T04E - what are you waiting for.

I think to answer your question properly, it would be necessary to know what the turbo specs are as they can vary a bit.

Have seen a few on both RB20s and RB25s with good results, does depend on exactly what you are looking for in a turbo. what sort of application? Drag, drift, circuit, street?

Would say you will probably get more lag than the stocky.

For $1200, you could fit it and if it is no good, you could probably get your money back selling it second hand if you decided you didnt like it. That is very cheap for new.

EDIT: big advantage over BB turbo - they are rebuildable, disadvantage - more lag.

with that exhaust wheel u will be using it for very high end dragging, otherwise it will be lag city below 5000rpm.

It will be an absolute and i mean an absolute pig on the road.

Good for Drag racing AND THAT IS ALL

Find a smaller .86 or .63 your power will come down lower in the boost range and less laggy then u can make your dump pipe for your new housing

Thats the power upgrade i am going for 2.

U dont need such a big turbo for 250rwkw, u can get a rebuild GCG 450hp low mount which will be slightly less responsive than the stocker.

At that price ($1200) you could buy a new exhaust housing, fittthe turbo, sell your old turbo. It would still be cheaper than a good high flow (2Kish) and you get a few $ back from the selling the stocky.

That is quite a large comp housing, so you probably wouldnt need to run very high boost to achieve your 250rwkw which is always a good thing.

Hey!

im currently running a similar turbo with same comp wheel/turbine/comp housing specs, but i have a 1.00 A/R exhaust housing. its on an RB25DET, and the lag is absolutely huuuge! just to give u an idea, it will hardly spool in first gear, wont even break traction. 2nd gear the wastegate wont open till about 6000RPM! makes about 10psi in 3rd gear by about 5000RPM.

on the other hand, once you're in 3rd gear, hang on!!! its a very scary ride if ur not used to it... i have had quite a few people ride in it who have R33's with 220-230rwkw, and they get quite a shock once it comes on boost.

unreal for a 3L motor revving to 8000+ for drags. My size exhaust housing A/R on the street is useless, because basically it will start powering hard after about 100km/h, and by that stage, u've lost ur license... so i could only imagine what a 1.32 would be like. Honestly, it wouldn't even spool up, not withing a normal rev range anyway.

Im now sourcing a 0.70 turbine housing which is rare, but they're still about.... it should make my current setup very driveable.

on a sidenote, just for comparison, the response of my turbo is in between a trust T78-33D and a T88-34D. so a 1.32 housing would definitely be worse than a T88, which is no good

I have been looking at a similar turbo set up. I can get from rotor works a T04E with a .70 comp cover and 4 inch comp wheel for $1280 and is able to suppurt 280KWKW. That is quite cheap compeared to gcg who want over $2500 for there stage 2 high flow turbo. The only thing that concerns me is how much lag the T04 would have. Does anyone on this site have a gcg turbo fitted to there car? and if so what are they like in there spool up time.

Hi dodge, we have used GCG hi flows on a number of Skylines, R32, R33's and R34's. For the S1, spool up is almost the same as standard, maybe 300 rpm later at most. But we never just bolt the turbo on, the cars always get tuned on the dyno, so the tuning easily offsets most of the lag. S2 is a little more, maybe an additional 500 rpm, but you don't get something for nothing. Bigger turbo = more power = later spool up.

I have no hesitation recommending them, they make their stated horsepower and so far have proved to be very, very reliable.

Please also remember that we don't tune our cars just for the single highest maximum horsepower, we tune for a good spread of power.

Thanks Sydney kid for your response. I have been doing quite a bit of research on GCG turbos and l think GCG is the way to go. They bolt directly to the standard manifold and are able to support a lot of horse power. What l would like to know is what wheels do they use to get that sort of horse power figure?

    • Yeahhhh, the costs have killed me. Spent more than the cost of an engine rebuild and it most mostly servicing and a tune lol.
    • I'm not 100% how the BMW racers do it, but I know from other brands like Merc, moving, and changing the coolers is one of the things. Like getting a transcooler out from infront of the radiator to out near a wheel arch. So some of the stuff you've got crammed in the middle front, spread it out and open up where you can in the bar to get more air in to the sides.
    • Small update for the day... Turns out the intercooler and engine coolant hose kits are anything but complete....I probably should have counted better but it only really covers about half the coolant hoses in the car, it really just covers the visible stuff and pretends everything else doesn't exist (turbo water feed and returns and also heat exchanger lines through the 2 pumps and cooler) .In any case, I'm happier to have half reliable hoses than none, but a bit of a disappointment. Anyway...finger click (and 5 hours).....hoses in place, lots of spring clamps replaced with screw clamps, and engine coolant is on the pressure tester for the night.   Incidentally, upsized header tank is an Inifiniti factory option....not sure I'll ever do prod car racing in this but at least it is legal.
    • Just weld it onto the hot pipe. If you want it right after the turbo, put it right after the turbo. Or rip the comp cover off and drill and tap a hole into it.
    • hahaha glad I can rely on you two to go on a spiral at the drop of a problem! Some quick answers....the ducting is excellent top bottom and sides....everything that gets in goes through the coolers (noting the oil cooler redirects it out again, fair call if it is cooling 120o+) and the heat exchanger for the intercooler also has some scoops to pick up more than it's fair share too. I can't see going down the water spray track....no bueno for formal racing and a big risk for long rally days if you run out (plus I'm not clear if it is allowed there either yet).   Frankly, it must be possible to reliably put 400kw through a standard front end, the BMWs do it so I just need to work it out....I'm starting with reducing blockages in the way and adding some coolant capacity with a bigger header tank, flushing rad and making sure it was filled/bled properly (I didn't do the last coolant change); also taken measurements incase next step is a bigger/higher capacity custom radiator
