Hey all just got back...

awsome weekend... the liver and kidneys are struggling after drinking only burbon and coke the whole weekend (apart from 1 bottle of gatarade and a bottle of lemonade :) )

Everyone was punching out some good times which was really good to see...

of the boys that i went down with there was;

of course frysie with a 1:55.22 giving him 2nd in his class and 8th outright

2 mates in SR20 powered 1600's running around the 2:02 mark, both suffering turbo gasket blowouts

a SR20 power Bluebird trx running a 2:10 also with turbo gasket problems

and as a tribute to a good handling package... the winner of the SAU dyno day lowest power (50.7rwkw)

the mighty datto 180b with a 2:16.53 on street tires

all apart from frysie running for the first time at PI

good weekend...

Also thrown in a small selection of pics..

Was another great day at pi. two weeks in a row and the car didnt miss a beat. Was great to see all the guys with the dattos finally out there having some fun. good work to the guys who came down and took some photos. Really happy with my time, and i still think there is another 2 seconds to be had. Lots of slower traffic making the day a little interesting/frustrating. So different to WRX days, so relaxed, yet so strict on strange things... wasnt a fan of the crack down on in car cameras, which i spent ages making up a mount for, only to have them say noone could use cameras at all after the practice!??

Bit of bad luck for one of the Datto girls, rolling her car into an imbankment at the second last turn. Very lucky she had a cage.

Well i'm officially hooked! I had an absolute ball in the underpowered 180b, and surprised myself with how well it was handling in its current spec :P I can't wait to make a few changes and have another go at it.. Every time i went out for some laps i shaved off some more time, i was beginning to work out how hard i could push the road tyres and was gradually working out the best line for most of the corners, but there is improvement to be made all round - I just wish i got some more track time! With that said, i was more than happy with a 2:16 for my first outing for the car, and my first time racing at phillip island..

The best part was that i was already having the time of my life in a 50rwkw datsun, so any changes i make to it from now on should keep making it more fun! i can only go forwards from here :)

Well done Ryan, 1.55 is certainly impressive! You definantly put some higher $$ higher power cars to shame - priceless!

Had a top time. Best Track in the WORLD. FACT. Super Fast, nice scenery, scary and G forces. That banked left coming on the straight and lining up the Group A GIO Bathurst R32 GTR then giving it the button made my day. Will post up the link to vid soon. Big thanks to Troy and Jack for helping me as would not have done it without the help and advice. You can really push your car hard at this track. I now know I need to adjust the shocks harder and can run the car lower as NO BUMPS at all on this super smooth track. She unloaded on turn one with the G forces from super grip and I nearly went sailing in HMAS Zed Boat.

Must organise a BIG Nissan event as next Dat Nissan Nats’ are two years away and up in Qld. Need to get a fleet of GTR’s, GTS-T’s, 200SX and Zed speed boats out at PI for a Big track day?

Times.

I'm IN SO hard, there'll be friction burns on the application form! :)

(nice times b.t.w.)

I'm in for that. someone has to keep john honest....

.

sadly it wont be me!

Better get a BIG boost button or Ben form Race Pace to beat me.

Roy if we orchistrate in advance when there is a day on and or are there SAU organised track days at P I? I am sure we can organise a day and get some zed bait for you guys. Maybe some Silvias also?

John, SAUVIC is not in a position to run a track day at PI, and if it were we wouldn't be able to get a 'no noise limit' day. A PIARC weekend is our best bet, we get the numbers and get the entry forms in, Saturday is practice and familiarisation (heaps of laps!!) and Sunday is timed sprints. Lets get the ball rolling and nominate a date for this to happen.

Here's the calendar: http://www.piarc.com.au/?page=calendar

At this stage looks like either July or November...

That's some impressive lapping there John!! first time there and fastest on the day... there's plenty of grunt in the old zed

I'd be in for PI in November or start of July.. I'm thinking weather wise Nov would be safer.

I think November is perfect. Gives plenty of time for everyone to get sorted if we are going to try and get cars from all over the place.

Plus - I'm busy in July

But I agree that a PIARC weekend is ideal. The 2 days together really help improve times a lot.

But makes for a very busy November. Tassie is still looking a possibility, though the costs are getting pretty high. But if it hits a wall then will be looking at a return to NSW trip.

And Snowie? Busy in July? So you call your involvement busy ?

So Jack is this the Island Magic as it is called? Weekend of 24th Sat practice and Sunday race, and 95db noise limit? If so and can get enough spots for 20 or so cars then this is the go?

Edited by Boosted Zed
Island Magic is actually a race weekend. So ules syou want to go door to door in a class of racing then i dont like your chances. I also think you need a PC licence or a Rally licence to enter.

Yuck and it was sounding so good. Thought there might have been more to this with Sat practice which usually means Race as in bumping guards on the Sunday. Any other event suitable at P I? Don't mention any other tracks.

My car and mainly me have a lot more in it as can handle lots more boost, especially on the button for the straight. Plus have wider rims and tyres for rear coming and need to adjust the shocks firmer as this track is so smooth as so fast I should have realised as it was a bit wobbly. Turn one at the end of the day nearly chucked me off as she unloaded big time. I had the Tein Flex set for Wakefield goat track soft.

Times for the day below.

PIARC do run their own sprints, with a Saturday practice. I normally only know about it when I get a letter in the mail.

Will see if i can find out more regardign dates later this month when we are back down there

I just sent an email to Phillip Island Sprint Secretary asking how we may be able to run a day or fit in with a sprint day etc.

Actually it's Dutton W.A. I'm busy with in July. So yeah I call my involvement busy. :(

However - looking at the PIARC website there is no other PIARC sprint weekends other than July.

    • Update for the sake of closure   Ended up getting the intercooler piping all sorted, new plugs and yellow jacket coils, and she was idling mint until it warmed up while I was bleeding the cooling system. Found the misfire to be localised to cyl 3 by unplugging coilpacks, ran a compression test, that checked out, then decided to get a mate to check if that spark plug was firing out of the motor. Upon cranking it over, with the injectors disconnected, the car actually fired and ran on a couple cylinders and heaps of fuel came out the top of cyl 3 I'd say that injector's either spraying incorrectly or spraying far too much, which is fine as I'm planning on replacing them anyway I'm planning on making about 250kW on flex fuel, and have a set of 1000cc injectors from ozautosport, obviously overkill but I'm planning on building the motor and running more boost further down the line, do you reckon they'd be too big for a smooth idle on 98? Thanks for the replies gents, much appreciated
    • I'm confused. You said you want to "remove the clear coat from most panels" but it sounds like you are actually doing a full respray? Few random things to add -  If you chase the blistered paint with 120 grit, I can almost guarantee you'll chase it down to bare metal (that's fine). But if you paint the car from here, you'll have nice little indents where ever the blistered paint was. The new paint won't magically level out the low areas, you need to fill them. Which leads me to the main point I wanted to add, make sure the whole car is flat before you paint it. All those areas with blistered paint you sanded out, make sure to fill them and triple check they are flat with a block guide coat. I'd also check the whole car is flat with a large block and guide coat but yeah up to you if you want to go that far.
    • 300hp (225kw) is barely outside the standard turbo's range with a bit of extra boost in it (200ish). If you are going to change the turbo you should aim for 250-300kw (330-400hp) to make the expense worthwhile
    • A couple of things, firstly omg that turbo is expensive! $3,000 USD for dinosaur technology is robbery. You could buy a G series turbo and have a good amount of change instead.  If you want a good budget option, have a look here - https://hypergearturbos.com/product/rb25dethighflow/ If you are keen to spend more, have look at the modern turbos, Garrett G series, Borgwarner EFR, etc. Have a look at the RB25 dyno results thread for inspiration.  If you upgrade your turbo to something that will support the 300hp you want and only "probably" have Haltech ECU, your car will only "probably" run. Actually, no it won't run. You are going to need the ECU and injectors at the time you do the turbo upgrade.  No thoughts on "this much boost" as you didn't say how much boost that actually is. Having said that, plenty of unopened RB25's making even more power then what you are chasing.
