i kno power fc are cheaper i owned 1 for a bit, but i want something a bit different like the haltech and where im getting my car done they specoalise is haltechs and will do a goo deal for it

i beam is better for torsonal loads ie.. hitting boost. h beams can be made lighter.

it really depends on what your aiming for. then you got the whole wich brand argument lol.

from the look of it youd be safe to use some cheap china made h or i beams like eagle, scat and some of the sub 1000 a set i beams.

Sts rods may be good. But by the time you crack test them , shot peen them, resize them and get good rod bolts for them are they any cheaper then the entry level rods you can get? Even Argo are cheaper these days as their pricing seems to have responded to the cheaper rods available on the market

Thats provided the Eagle etc rods are in fact better then what Nissan put in the motor.

By the time you 'prep' the std rods you may as well spend a tinny little more and grab a set of forged rods.

All engine builders (that I have spoke to when building mine up) said not to waste the $$ on 'prepping' rods when these days after markets can be picked up for so cheap.

It really is saving minimal cash.

Go for the aftermarket rods. A set of Eagles or similar will only cost you $300 or so more than modifying the standard rods and you have something brand new that hasn't done millions of cycles already and is a better design and stronger than the factory rod to start with. They may need slight machining to set the proper pin and bearing clearances but it will be minor, most aftermarket rods are supplied with the pin and big end bore finished to bottom tolerance to allow adjustments to suit the crank/bearings and piston pin. Don't be scared off by the rods being made in China, a lot of big name companies have either set up over there or have their parts made by chinese factories, it reduces the cost to make the same product.

Just a quick point on testing standard rods.

Some one mentioned having them checked by x-ray rather than MPI (Magnetic Partical Inspection). To be honest its pointless having the x-ray done, its alot more expensive than MPI or DPI testing and unless correct technique is used it will not show up very very small cracks.

I would reconmend DPI (Dye Penatrive Inspection) Testing. This will show up any cracks or flaws and in my opinion is easier to do than MPI.

The rods are soaked in a dye for a few minutes and then cleaned off using water or a cleaner. A developer spray is then used, this will bring out any dye that remains in cracks or flaws and thus you can tell if the rods will be OK!

I was tempted to use standard rods but I think I will spend the extra cash and have new H Beam rods fitted, they are a good price now.
