Shims Behind Brake Pads - How Important Are They?

How important are the little shims behind the brake pads and what do they actually do? I've lost one when changing the pads and am wondering if I can without 1?

They are just to help stop squealing when braking as far as i know. No big deal to run without them, you just may find the noise annoys you

i don't have them on my '32

and yes, they squeal like a bitch

I just pulled the R33 GTS-t calipers of mine apart and there was the shims from behind the pads, but also a smaller one on one side only. Its not square it tappers off to one end. Just wondering what this is?

I think each pad should have 2 shims?

Make sure you put high temp grease on the back of the pads
