hey guys,

Just fitted my universal hks ssqv onto an adaptor that I got made up for me. Having many issues, car idles horrible, up and down like crazy from like 100 to 1000 rpm non stop, engine struggles and vibrates weird, while its doing that black smoke comes out of the exhaust, If i put my hand on the bov where it blows the air out the rev thing stabilizes but as soon as you drive again its doing it all again. I have blocked off the plumback pipe with a bottle cap, is that good enough? It had an O ring that i purchased from US which is too small and doesnt hold it tight so I have put a larger O ring to make it all sit firm yet under mild acceleration you can hear the bov wooshing(leaking air right?)

Since then I have out my stock bov back on and now my car has misfires on high rpm

Can anyone help me with this?

thanks heaps

yer i had the same problem...i just took it off and pout the stocker back on. thing is i noticed that the aftermarket bov didnt properly close when the butterfly was closed, like i revv the motor, it opens but closes slowly but not fully...im assuming its a faulty bov or i have a vaccum leak where I HAVE NO CLUE!!!

yea it seems to leak, but thing is i put the stocker back on and now my car misfores on high rpm when flat out, would it be coz the black smoke covered the plugs and they are no good? or is it coil packs which i doubt could be damaged by playing around with a bov.

2nd one I've seen play up... The valve c*cks sideways and gets jamed open = leak...

You should be able to close and you will hear it pop back into its place. It will work perfectly intil it gets jamed again.

Yeah as other said change plugs, because when the BOV is leaking its the same as intercooler pipe blown off and AFM reads all this Air coming in but its not actually getting into the engine... rich rich mixtures.

yeah i have a genuwine universal hks ssqv bov, im just gonna sell this one and buy a skyline specific hks ssqv which are not meant to have adjustment screw, is that right?

the rich mixtures must have stuffed my plugs, i'll replace the plugs on monday and reset my ecu and see how it goes.

Btw i had the car running with this dodgey bov for about 20 mins blowing black smoke while it was reving like crazy, would it damage my airflow meter by any chance?

wouldnt hurt to clean the afm anyway with some throttle body cleaner its not hard to do. im not sure about the car specific model having no adjustment screw, because all cars vary, like say you might have a standard car and it works fine on it and then you might have the same model car but with 300kw it want hold boost there or it will cause excess flutter/not open on the stanard car. i reckon the best bov you can get it the new greddy type rs it can be plumb back aswell. :P

how do you clean the airflow meter? pull it apart or something?

Why do you say the greddy type rs is the best?

what sound does it make? is it like a unique sound or the usual pccchhh! ?

Better yet, keep your original BOV and eliminate all your problems.

Personally id rather my car run properly then have a full sick phhhs phss whistle whistle where are the chicks? sound.

My car came with a turbo smart plum back bov but if i didnt i wouldnt have bothered spending that much to replace something that already works just fine.

thats true, but once you boost your car the stock bov doesnt hold boost and leak bad, so you have to have something aftermarket on a modded car

Well if you NEED to, go a plum back dude, i havnt had a problem with my bov at all, no idling issues or stalling.

If you have the standard ECU definately go plumb back.

yea thats my plan, either plumback the hks ssqv or get this greddy type RS and plumb it back

the greddy rs you can either plumb back or atmo, better than other bovs that do both.

you clean the afm with throttle body cleaner just spray it let it dry and then spray it again and it takes the dirt off pretty easy!

go to nengun for the greddy type rs they have cheap prices and vechile specific models.

Youll still be able to hear them if you plumb them back as well, so you can get the best of both worlds (that is if you like the noise of a bov)

    • Not that I know from experience, but in theory you'd want your gate spring to be as close to target pressure as possible, so you'd go with the higher gate spring?
    • Before I commit to it as I already have the wastegate off the car, would you change it to the 9psi spring instead of the 12, or whack it back on now and try your suggestion?   Edit: Actually I might just swap the spring and see what the logs say after another few pulls, as we know it's still spiking without the Mac valve in the picture so I need more data without the Mac valve trying to combat the issue.
    • Sounds good Hmm suppose the main thing is, how much do you care about this car? The filler doesn't make for a very good water barrier lol. If there was a tiny little bit of rust forming now, that in 3 to 5 years time becomes obvious under the paint (starts to bubble up), would it bother you?
    • I already have the ability to datalog the voltage... what I can't do is correlate it to what the gauge is showing when I'm looking at the data at a later date. Or something like this. Except getting the oil to 125C+ involves me going 200+kmh at the track so you can imagine this is a little tricky unless I do something like note what the voltage is when I am at the top of 5th gear so I have a point to reference on. Drove car today. O2 still reading richer because hopefully not a leak instead of massive restriction I've introduced. Car really doesn't sound like a LS. It's quite strange. Pulled a bit of fuel out up top. This does potentially explain why my spark plugs looked like the car was running pretty over-rich. If I was tuning it to a ~12.7 which in reality was far richer than that in the past. It will be handy to have the dyno WB to compare my WB to to compare notes that's for sure. At this point I'm happy to just sit in the passenger seat and tune the thing given I've got about 7 million hours on the platform lol.
    • Yeah I understand you have to pay for an updated map or subscription service or something. But I can't even find a current map for Australia. My map is dated 2017, but didn't this car version still sell in Australia until 2021?   Also, just as an aside, the navigation system warns you of traffic incidences ahead.....why would they include that on a map they knew is not receiving live information. I am forever going to be warned of an incident that probably existed for 30 minutes 8 years ago.
