OK so i'm really starting to get attention from driving my gtr as a daily while i sort out a new car.

in two years i have not been pulled over untill the other day when i got back from the states.

they breath test me, have a brief look over my car, and then let me go. they were just paddy wagon cops.

then today i get a dirty look from a highway near my house whos doing this no right turn sign and pulling over heeps of people.

i need to get some thing in order so i dont get defected. and give them any reason..

OK i have..

Hks Kansai cage, its only really a half cage but has two bars going towards feet, see photo i dont have the rear seats in either. but belts are still there... is this a problem?

40small.jpg

Gt wing i dont know if they are legal or not?

i'll just post a photo of the engine bay will be easier than listing everything.

34small.jpg

my headlight thing (on the right) i figure thats a problem

peeeeee.jpg

my wheel size is 17x9's i think. with 255 40 17 semis on them.

my exhaust is very quiet. put it needs a pussy. i'm thinking of cutting off one of my mufflers and putting one in. as one muffler has a slight rattle.

if there is anything i have missed please help!

cheers

Im pretty sure to have a half cage you have to remove the rear seats and re-register the car as a 2 seater. On the flipside if your car is a 4 seater it is illegal to remove the rear seat.

other possible reasons for concern:

Carbon bonnet?

Too low?

Headlight

Non adr approved seat?

As you are in NSW uninclosed pod filters

Electronics? ie. computer, boost controller SAFC etc - all illegal

Cage will cause a problem as will the pod filters and your modified headlight (which i love btw). They'll pick on anything and everything if they feel like it or if you fail the attitude test at an RBT.

The trick is to not give them a reason to pull you over in the first place.

Make the car quiet, keep it clean and for god sake get rid of that police-attractor/dinner table on your boot!

Do you have an Engineer's cert for any of the mods?

If not, then they're all defectable. The law states that anything on the car that it wasn't homologated with, or signed off by an engineering signatory, is defectable. There are several "owner verifiable mods" which are your basic swap-outs, like rims, but technically you can get done for quite a few things in there if you don't have an engineering certificate.

The cop would have to be quite an asshole to do you for your aftermarket radiator, but even that is potentially defectable (let alone the "common" bullshit defects like the uncovered pods, aftermarket seats, etc).

Bonnet is the standard one with vent moulded in it. so i'd say thats ok. very little of the reinforcment was removed

now whats the height ment to be? and where is that measured from?

air box is on its way i need to make one tho! are arc boxes legal with the exposed panel filter? becaus i was going to model mine off one of them that i have.

seat i dont really want to change.

wing i will probably remove and leave on only for track work.

most of my electrics is hidden from sight.

What does this have to do with Police 'brutality'?

As has been said, without an engineers sign-off, most of the mods on your car are illegal, most notably the roll cage, GT wing and drag headlight.

By the way, that car looks familiar, what area are you in?

Probably nothing to do with police brutality. just has a catchy ring to it.

yeah i can understand your view, which is why i am here asking about this before a problem happens. seeing what i have to do before i head off to an engineer to get the right paperwork.

ok.

cage should be fine if you are keeping it just get the car re-registered as a 2 seeter. the headlight thing is total illegal. sadly, modifying your factory bonnet (cutting support) has made it defectable too. the seat is defectable too as it can't be tilted to get rear access (but if you reg as 2 seat it may be ok too). the wing is defectable and is the most noticable of all the mods, so I'd get rid of that first.

your attitude to cops often has a major role in defect/no defect.

this is my interior. as you can see it has no rear seat at all, or seat belts, and has a half cage, and a fixed carbon fibre seat and no longer uses a normal retractable seat belt at all (harness only). It also has 3 gauges mounted on the dash (though not on the top) and an aftermarket real with quick release. I have been pulled over in this state and not been questioned about any of it. The officer didn't even make a single mention of any of that stuff. The other big thing I have going for me is standard body (i mean completely, no big front lip, no modified/cut bonnet, no big wing, just R33 GTR wheels).

The other thing I do is if it's going to be a long time between track days is put back the standard seat, and standard seat belt. :O

Hey Richard!

Sweet i will get onto the rego in january when it comes around again!

i'm pretty easy going, and polite to police i dont have a problem or a record or anything like this. if i have done something wrong i admit it!

i still have the original seatbelt and just the harness is always in also. i might have to invest in a standard seat. i will see what the engineer ends up saying about it all. when i do the two seat business..

now my mate did the same thing to his srpinter bonnet. first he has a std bonnet that had no rio.. and then he got another and put the vent in and cut only very small ammount of rio out. and engineer passed that but wouldnt the other.

i think the wing is the one that needs to go while not in use. it is a bit outrageous. but i love it.

Having just been through all this:

Talk to an engineering signatory.

Anything that's nonstandard and isn't owner-approvable (like rims +1", exhaust, suspension without geometry changes)

will be defectable.

Looking at your photos, cage, pods, wing, rims, headlights, perhaps even the steering wheel.

The signatory will tell you what's needed; but in general stuff can't make the emissions worse (pods!); can't decrease the

safety aspects (wing! rims! lights! cage!) and be approved. You could probably cover the pods in a box and get away

with it; and cage/rims/wing as long as they don't decrease safety for the occupants. Headlights I'd say you need

to change.

Regards,

Saliya

any aftermarket bolt on accessories are illegal unless engineered

Your roll cage also needs to be padded around the head area

there are alot of engineers in nsw just look on the rta website and get the vehicle engineered

Everything from wheels to cage to lights to gauages

no headaches thenn

Jason, technically thats not completely correct, as Saliya mentioned there is a list of modification categories that the RTA deems as being able to be 'owner certified'

Granted this applies only to very mild changes, but yes as to the more obvious mods on this particular car, engineering is needed.

Hahaha. i took the wing off lastnite but i do that from time to time anyway.

i have an engineer to go to. next time i see him i will have a chat to him about it all.

cheers for all the info on this. seems like i am not that far up the creek.

andrew, what type of radiator is that? and does the shroud fit back on if needed? and is it any good?

Hey mate,

its greddy/trust, i dont think there is a shroud. but i was thinking of getting an electric thermo anyway apparently i can get them for pretty cheep and decent ones.

and is the radiator any good as in? or is the shroud good? caus i never had a shroud with it

I've seen you lurking in the Stagea Discussion threads.

I've gotta say, cops don't even give you a second glance when you're driving the Stagea. Granted, it won't be anywhere near as fast as the 32, but they can be quick enough to surprise a few unsuspecting "performance car" owners...

Even better, buy a Stagea for daily running and keep the GT-R for the occasional track day thrash!

this is the idea! tow and daily driver car.

i got lots of spare parts to sell before the stagea comes into the picture tho!

    • I doubt you will find such a thing after all this time (and if you do, unless it comes from a wrecker with a guarantee I would have no confidence about the "good, running" part. There are few of these old motors around, and if one is out of the car but apparently OK there is a high chance of issues. You are much better off pulling the engine you have and having it rebuilt. If you have no plans other than running a stock motor, a quick clean, measure, new bearings and rings and a head job is going to be the cheapest way to get you back into a reliable engine
    • Yeah I haven't found anything different between the Fuga/Q70 and Skyline/Q50 hybrid drivetrains. I think its also worth remembering that the engine (VQ35HR) is from a 350z originally; unlike say the Toyota hybrid engines it is not totally tuned for economy, there is still a bit of life/fun in it and the setup goes well with 225+50kw available BTW, FWIW my only qualifications on fuel are that I burn a lot of it. I use the cheapest grade the car is rated for (95) and at times when it was not available have run 94 (E10) without any issue. Same goes for cars I have rated (or tuned) for 98....prices vary a lot in country towns and just last week the cheapest 98 in town was 50c higher than E10, I'm not going to pay more than I have to.
    • Very nice - I also have a 92 GTST and hardly see any others around these days
