Air Con Fan Relay

Hi all, I have a R32 GTR. Recemtly I've noticed that my aircon wasnt very cold when the car isnt moving. After a lil poking around I found that the aircon fan doesnt turn on at all. I thought that the fan had died so I tried to hard wire it to the battery to test it and it works fine. I'm assuming I burnt a relay or fuse. Have tried replacing the relays in the relay box on the drivers side of the engine bay but with no luck.

So is there another relay for this fan and if so where abouts.

pretty sure the thermo fan will be triggered via a pressure switch may only work when pressure reachs certain range

it may just be low on gas and need regassing

most nissan fans dont run straght away they need to have elevated hi side pressures for the fan to cut in to get some air flow

i would get you air con checked out before you got replacing relays

The aircon has just been regassed and pressures checked. We had the engine running and aircon on for about 10mins on a 35deg day and the fan never kicked in.

the fan in r32's arnt designed to come in with a/c at all.

they are an engine temp switched only (over 95 deg!!) there is a green plug that goes to a sender in the bottom tank in the radiator. it is possible to wire up via a diode to have it come on with a/c. any good auto elec should be able to do this for you or if your in brisbane i can help you out. they really do suffer from high a/c system pressures if it isnt wired in.

Thanks blur it makes sense now. Any chance you could write up a DIY or draw a diagram of how to install the diode. I'm sure other R32 owners are having the same problems sitting at the traffic lights on hot days

had my a/c in my R33 regassed the other day, and the guy noticed the fan wasn't switching on...He told me it should come on as soon as the A/C is switched on....like you the car was idling with the a/c on and the fan still wasn't kicking in.

He said I should get it wired through a relay, to the compressor, so that it comes on whenever the compressor gets power

Whats the go? is it working like its supposed to at the moment, or should I do what he said?

i was checking my plug last night (as i am getting a fan since the fan was never replaced by a previous owner who had crashed the car).

i had the aircon on, and it took a while for the plug to get power, then if i turned the aircon off it would keep power for a few seconds before turning off. then when you turned the aircon back on it wouldn't come straight back on. it took a little bit to come on. it isn't just controlled by the aircon, but the temp sensor as well.

ok. i started mine from cold (not completely cold, but had been sitting for a few hours) and it was a few mins before mine came on. i had my test light wedged into the clip, and earthed, and i had time to check the water temp sender resistance, and fiddle with a few other things before it came on.

If your A/c was regassed, then it will have the most modern gas. Apparently, that gas requires more cooling of the A/c radiator than the older style gasses. So, even the normal engine fan is not enough to properly cool the A/c gas.

I struck this problem when I ran a thermo fan on the engine - at low speeds, high revs (eg taking off from lights), it sounded like I had an atmo BOV because of the way the A/c gas gets compressed then expands through the radiator. Fixed it by re-installing the engine fan and re-wiring the A/c fan to come on with the A/c (not just the compressor).

I got it regassed expecting it to take R12 having read that the R33's have R12 on SAU...When I got there he said it was the normal R134 or whatever its called....

I'm the first owner in Australia because I imported it myself, so it has never been converted etc. He said as of about 1994 all cars would be R134...maybe not in Japan, but mines a 98 model, so maybe they'd switched over to that as well by then?

Take a while Dezz man for it to activate.

The 33 air con system works much better than the 32. It will activate at the correct temp regardless whether you have your air con on or not so it work a bit like a back up system as well if you happen to run thermal fan and it stuff up or your clutch fan stuff up and water temp raise, it will kicks in.

Though i don't know about after you've installed PFC as for my 32, i had a heating issue a while ago and the air condensor fan won't activate regardless how much water temp get up to, only activate itself when i have air con running, at the correct temp offcourse.

Best is to pull your radiator out, send it to a Radiator place for service every begining of summer, well i do, you'll be supprise how much blockage they get or tap a stand alone switch that activate the condensor fan at your own desire just to be safe but also allow it to activate itself.

i was fiddling round with mine last night and discovered that, as west said, it isn't controlled by the aircon. there is a temp sensor at the bottom of the radiator that controls the fan. however i couldn't get it to come on. the other night i started the car, had it running for about 2 mins, tested the plug and it had power, then the power went off, then it came back on. last night i got the car hot, i took it for a drive, i sat there reving it, but could not get the switch to work. i had the clutch fan roaring its arse off, but couldn't get the switch to change.

its really giving me the shits. does anyone know what temp the switch should activate at?

i think my switch is either dead, or caked in crap and not getting a reading.
