:) Now you should go in a car with 2860R's and tell us what you think...

Yes I changed from T517Z's to 2860R's..

Yes I have MUCH more response..

The T517Z's were good for top end, more suited to drag racing, will make good peak power...

No I wouldn't change them for anything.....

No I wouldn't buy HKS items, the price of the Garretts are too good refuse...

:/

Ive been in the same gtr and driven it with the 517's....havent seen the 2860R's in a gtr infromt of me so havent had a chance to see in in action, having said that cant knock the 517's as they seemed to come on nice and early for what they are. I dont doubt they arent as responvice to the 2860, it from the trim size described they would easily.

I dont wanna be made out like a jackass so I thought id have to give another of my 2cents.

Ash, as stated you have been in a car with 2860's thats fine, theres a bit of a difference between sitting in a passenger seat and driving a car, so I cant see why you disregard the 517's so fast...I guess it all depends how you drive the car aswell....

each to their own....anyone wanna give me a ride in a 2860 powered GTR? So I can see what all the fuss and a fuedin is about? :)

peace

Jez

I have dyno sheets to prove the response differences, will try and dig them up...

I have the -5's, you should achieve your desired power target, it all depends on whether its standard motor or rebuilt, cams, boost level etc....

Your exhaust and injectors will restrict you a little....

I'm at around 350rwkws on 20psi...

600cc should see 300awkw,and as far as exhaust i just purchased a 3 1/4 inch full titanium, and ill have stainless dumps and fronts so should be fine id say..

stock motor but will have cam gears...

a mate i no has the same setup but with -7 making 300awkw and he has 550cc injectors...

i wouldn't chose either. for low mount turbos for me it's either HKS GT-SS, HKS GT-2530 or Nissan R34 GTR N1 depending on exactly want you want from the car.

The GT28060R-5's are nearly identical to the HKS GT2530's.

I would personally go the Garrett if i were comparing the two.

Listed are the HKS GTSS specs also which uses the same turbine as the GT2530's but slightly smaller compressor wheel although the GT2530's much like the GT2860R's turbines are usually clipped to increase exhaust flow.

OK I have found the graphs, but my scanner is playing up so here's a rough comparison:

The dyno runs were done on a dyno dynamics dyno in 4th gear (R33 GTR) and in the same mode (non-shootout)..

At 95km/h, the T517Z's were making 85kw, the 2860R's 95kw

At 112km/h, 105kw compared to 140kw

At 128km/h, 155kw compared to 240kw :)

At 145km/h, 255kw compared to 305kw

At 160km/h, 330kw compared to 325kw

At 178km/h, 360kw compared to 350kw

At 194km/h, 365kw compared to 358kw

These figures were taken from a dyno reading AT THE REAR WHEELS.

The same dyno was used.

The car essentially had the same components, same exhaust, cams, ecu etc...

As you can see the T517Z's were no match down low and midrange of the 2860R's is phenomenal..

Though when the T517Z's finally do wake up, they make quite good power..

I prefer higher average power than higher top end power...

Others might like the waiting and then big rush of the turbo spooling at full boost.

The 2860R's have a more progressive power delivery..

From the graph its evident which are more responsive...

Hope that helps...

P.S once the scanner is sorted, I'll post up the graphs...

Just a note...

The GT-SS specs you listed are in fact SR20 Gt-SS specs..

The GTR specific Gt-SS are quite a bit smaller ...much more like R34 N1 or -7 Garretts.

cheers,

Ben

Still Garrett is the better all round option for cost-power

Hey all,

I own the GTR Wheezy drove. I cant agree more with him in the responsive sense. The T517z(atleast for me) is a smooth turbo. I have no problems driving it on the street and track. My experience from this turbo set up has shown me that its perfect if you want various uses from the car.

List of mods...... Twin trust T517z's

Greddy combined front/dump

Blitz Nur spec cat back

Bltz twin pod filters

Greddy profec B boost controller

OS Geikin twin plate clutch

Results from these mods are response with power right through rev range. Havent lost a street drag to date :) Haha, just joking

Catch!!

Well I have already made the choice and gone for the GT2860-5.

Done the drive thing on a car here in the west with -5 well set up and it was very impressive to say the least.

At the price they seem hard to beat.

With any luck I can do a before and after sometime in the new year and post the results.

Reliability mods going in as well - PFC + EBC, timing belt, sump baffle, oil cooler + relocation kit, 700cc inj, adj cam wheels, new custom dumps/front pipes, high flow cat, JB clutch and new gaskets (thanks to a leaking plenum that started this process in the first place). By by $$$$$.

    • People still have Skylines? I thought they're non-existent now.
    • Harness update time have had great fun and learnt so much already so far with this project. I started off making both the ignition and injector sub harnesses in the hope any mistakes i made here aren't as hard to undo and learn from as the main harness.  A cool comparison of the old harness using presumably TXL wire and the new which is using Tezel. Also opted to use DTM plugs to keep the whole setup as neat and tidy as possible and tucked the wiring under the coil bracket to try and keep it all from sticking out too much. Although the injector harness, I'm not overly happy with as I'm still using the rubber boots that are supplied with the type of plugs it just looks ugly and sticks out like a sore thumb with the white identifiers so a slight redesign may be done.   Then it was main harness time and most importantly trying to route it nice and away from the heat it will use the OEM heater hose routing which is no longer present to keep the harness up high and secure. it's amazing how much smaller this harness is able to be compared to the old one. plugged everything into the emtron and with the help of the tuner again attempted to start it up and instantly fired up and running smoothly on all 6 which was a big shock to myself. So still some routing and adjusting to be done for the final fit up and installing a knock sensor harness plug which is in the post all has gone surprisingly well.     The old harness for shits and giggles.
    • They do that at random every now and then, with almost no detectable cause. Mine has done it a couple of times (over 25 years!!). Never worked out why.
    • I don't post on here and have been lurking for some time now. Many of the topics have helped me out more times than i can count. I was racing yesterday (11/9) and blew a front right CV shaft. I have spares so I popped a new one in. A thread i read previously said to check the engine mounts if you blow a front CV. Upon inspection, the front right mount was completely separated from the upper plate. This discovery saved me time and money, because i would have blown another CV if i went back out. Just wanted to thank you guys and wish everyone luck with with their builds. (Now if we could only come up with a solution for my power steering belt flying off after hitting the rev limiter, lol)
    • Either way he still need those style of spacer to go into the manifold because the photo he currently has is not going to work
