Ok guys, im building a rb26/30 and am looking for around 550rwkw in race tune eventually. The heads almost done and consists of custom 272ish cams with 10.5mm lift, bigger springs, ported head, match ported greddy intake with 80mm t.b. The exhaust manifold is a 6boost one and turbo a mr turbo ceramic ball bearing T72 which is similar in size to a gt42.

The bottom end is being built at the moment and is why i need to decide on which oil pump to use so the right size restrictor can be put in. I have done all the things mentioned by Sydnekid to control oil including enlarging the return oil galleries from the head, external drain at the back of the head, H.E sump etc

Ive searched heaps and have heard alot of bad things about n1 pumps failing. I am concerned about it breaking especially when hitting the limiter and DO NOT WANT TO RISK IT BREAKING! Should i just sell the n1 pump and get a JUN pump as they are $1000 on nengun and greenline so $600 more. Or should i stick with the n1 and somehow setup something thats cuts ignition and fuel when low oil is sensed to save the engine incase it breaks?

IMO the biggest problem with nissan oil pumps is teh grive, it fetigues the brittle(hardened)gears, causing them to break, with a crank collar(like what comes with the jun pump) an N1 should be fine. Im sure if anyone fitted a jun pump without a collar, they would have the same problem, possibly worse, as it would require more torque to drive it. Im building a mototr for my gtr, very similar to yours, and using an r33 gtr pump with a proengines collar.

I use the JUN pump, and yes if you use the stock nissan N1 pump they will fail, as they did in my former engine. evrything failed in one time, the gearbox, the oil pump and the main big end bearings. so use the jun pump with a cranck collar.

Just my input...

Was reading a thread about oi pumps on SAU, and it seems that some people on here have had an N1 pump let go as well, and not any(bar maybe 1) JUN pump have failed. Obviously, the N1 is better than stock, but going by what I have read from feedback in this other thread, the N1 can fail past a certain power level. You'd have to search to find out what level.

So JUN > N1, according to stuff read on SAU.

no oil pump on a rb can take the harmonics of the crankshaft at hi revs.

if your buildng up a 30 bottom end and still using the rb30 crank. you will be limmited to 7000rpm.

if you want to rev it more you gonna need an external oil pump set up or a ati harmonic balancer.

also using a standard wieght flywheel will help to.

Thanks for the reply's. I think the jun pump might be the safer option. Also im going to use a rb26 ross harmonic balancer. I was speaking to the maker of the ross balancers and he suggested using the bigger rb26 balancer as the rb30 one is smaller and is only really designed for the rb30's limit of about 6500 i think. I think most of the pulleys are the same except the power steering might be different so might have to modify that.

    • The trigger kit I have is similar to the one in the link below. While going through Facebook, I saw someone else mention a similar issue, and I’m starting to think this could be related to the crank gear itself. I understand these parts are CNC machined, but maybe some earlier versions or individual pieces might have slight inconsistencies—it just doesn’t look right in my case. https://www.facebook.com/share/16an8evZd9/?mibextid=wwXIfr I originally installed the crank gear using the thin OEM washer, but as shown in the attached photo, the timing belt walks very close to the edge. When I tried using a Nitto washer—which is thicker—it actually made the issue worse. The belt walks about 1mm off the front edge, which raises more concern about alignment.   I’ve gone through the full process of elimination:   The tensioner pulley and bolt are brand new and installed correctly. The bolt isn’t bent and is oriented properly. The back of the tensioner and the idler pulley are clean and seated correctly. The idler sits slightly more forward, which I understand is due to its design. I’ve experimented with both tight and loose belt tension, but it makes no difference. As soon as the engine runs, the belt immediately walks forward again—even if I reset it beforehand.     At this point, I’m considering replacing the crank gear with your Race Version 1 (12-tooth), but before purchasing, I wanted to ask:   Are you aware of any alignment issues when using this gear? Would this gear help keep the belt aligned correctly, or could the walking still occur? Does it work with a standard missing-tooth crank and rear washer? Is there any specific crank setup or install procedure required?     For reference, I’m not using a front washer, as the PRP crank gear seems to replace the need for one.   Looking forward to your advice.
    • Yep, looks that way. Never driven an E30 or R31 so I can only imagine
    • Yuh, My new R34 box is sitting on the workshop floor (in its large shipping box, which is a nice thing on its own), along with a front plate to convert to push clutch. There was no way I was interested in rebuilding my existing one. Was only partly interested in the risk of buying a used one. But, if you want a 2nd hander, I can point you to one in/near Melbourne at least. @Komdotkom has one that should be in good enough condition to be usable. I don't think it's in a for sale thread, you'd have to message him. @redzedhas one that definitely needs a rebuild.
    • I used to love going to Amaroo to watch the HQ series go for broke (eventually stopped due to lack of spare parts) and also the Porsche series.  It was so cool to back your car up to nearly the edge of the viewing barrier and party with your friends, having a bbq and alcoholic/non drinks. It was such a family/mates atmosphere
