anyone done this trip before??? i live in penrith so i can either go down the m4 to pennant hills rd or go to windsor then up the putty

oh and ill be leaving at about 4 in the morning on boxing day

Pacific highway dude!

more scenic going the coast :(

Get some good sleep and leave a bit early - I drove to Byron Bay couple years back and left at 4am - got a great run!

just dont get too pissed Xmas day :)

go Putty Road, New England Highway (towards Newcastle), Pacific Highway up to about Tea Gardens, then Buckett's Way (towards Gloucester), Thunderbolts Way to Walcha, then New England Highway for the rest.

For a quicker run, head up the F3 and Pacific Highway, then Buckett's / Thunderbolts.

You'll go through some of the best roads you'll find anywhere, and it's about an hour quicker than New England Highway from Sydney to Armidale.

I'd go the coast road though being a truck driver its the only route I'd use and did 5 times a fortnight for years, the road has been upgraded many times which have not been updated yet on whereis imo .but this time of year is always dangerous something ive learnt ,there are alot of morons that use the same roads we do and dont care about other road user's just what they wanna do and to hell with anyone else ,this dosnt just include the speeding motorist there are alot of tourists and holiday makers out there who wanna slow and look at a view or sight see and tend to forget about whats behind them and cause accidents seen it many times my advice is to take your time take plenty rest breaks and drive carefully ,be alert we all want you to get there safely

cheers Peter

P.S sorry for being long winded

awwwww, you're coming to say hi to me

I think the inland way works out about 10kms further or something (I really can't remember, it was ages ago since I worked it out). I just like going coast way, but wouldn't recommend it during the silly season... it gets hella busy!

thanks for all your input... i was talking to a workmate last night about it at the chrissy party an he said that the new england was really rough... is that fixed up now or you still have to dodge potholes and what not??? i dont really care what the view is i just want to get up there... ill look into that buckets/thunderbolts today whereis saysy its about 10 ks more inland so the only thing im worried bout is bottlenecks or an acco

Id seriously go the coast, I do newcastle to brisbane 2-3 times a year, and for the 8 hours its a nice tidy run, do a one stoper at coffs for some lunch an fuel an ull be all set 4hours break another 4 hours, as said the fuzz are out in force on hols on both roads just try an do the right speed an ull be fine.

personally new england is borin and to many kangaroos to deal with at dawn an dusk, let alone the number of trucks.
