wow this car has taken a massive overhaul. its good to see that you have taken the time to fix it up and look after it. i very almost brought this car when inark had it for sale what must be a bit over a year ago now. i had only just brough my 4door when toffy decided to sell it off again and i was pretty dissapointed i couldnt get it. i to was under the impression that the manual conversion had been done in japan. i gess after reading about the things you have had to do i am kind pleased that i didnt get it as both you and toffy have thrown alot more money at it than i would have been able to. i loved the east bear tail light covers so much that i chased down a set for mine as soon as i got it.

i must say thoe its been good to be able to follow your thred and see everything that has gone on with it.

i am also about to embark on an rb25 conversion into mine as mine started life as a stock auto and i have since blow the auto box.

keep up the good work the car looks tuff. oh and why didnt you flare out the rear guards?

damo

hey mate

rear guards are flared out... just not heaps.. not easy to do on a 4 door :D

trans conversion was done by inark and his mates.. at least thats what ove been told. Anyway all the dodgyness has been fixed now

Where did you get a set of the east bear tail light covers from? i brok both mine on the track... :)

hi simon

yea sorry i didnt mean to put it down its just the fronts are fat as so i didnt look to hard at the rear.

i started asking around on here and someone pointed me in the direction of a 6 month old forsale thread where some had been up for sale. i got them of giffo i think. he had them but then got series 2 four door tail lights which didnt suit the covers. he was going to fit them if they didnt sell but i got them quick smart. i payed a fair coin for them but it think it was worth it. i have been asked since where to get them but i realy dont know. i asked giffo a few times and i think he said there was another forum member that worked for a aus suplyer for east bear but when i have contacted him he said he has not been able to find them in there current stock listing.

well i just done a few quick searches but didnt come up with any other places to get them. drop gaffa a pm and ask him. he did say they were $280 out of japan plus fees and charges so they are expensive. if you are keen to get a set i could get a set made off mine if you wanted? seems there is a fair bit of interest in them.

oh where did you get your half cut from and did you look around much. and how much if you dont mind me asking. im looking around at the moment but it is gona cost me a bucket load in freight to get a half cut from the mainland.

thanks damo

geeze they are expensive hey, spewing mine broke, but i reckon i might just leave the look of the lights and just drive the thing :P

i got my package from Japanese Motorsport in adelaide... $3500 i paid, came with everything, and the motor was mint, the engine bay that it was sitting in was one of the cleanest ive seen! when i got the motor home i went right over everything and there was hardly any dirt on it, seems to be a real genuine low kms motor!

dam thats a whole 1g cheaper than anywhere elce.

do you have some contact details for them mainly an email adress?

well the offers there if you do decide to get some replacements.

www.japanesemotorsport.com

yeah replacements would be good haha... umm you know anyone who can fibreglass well? take a mould of yours and go from there... could sell em off for a fair bit too!

keep up the good work the car looks tuff. oh and why didnt you flare out the rear guards?

damo

athid from vic rolled/flared the guards damo, cost me around 1k for that and the nismo diff in memory :(

looks tuff as now btw simon :)

news flash: just got the 25 running and driveable. Ended up making tailshaft myself at the engineering workshop next door. works a treat.

couple of large issues have popped up tho... my radiator leaks, and the brand new clutch doesnt seem to grip. also my AVCR i just got doesnt work lol.

well if your keen i want to rack your brain about what problems you came across. i have been reading up on this and the 2 main probs i can see is gear box mounts and tail shaft thoe i am also unsure about the speedo side of things either. should only be a few weeks befor i realy get cracking into my conversion.

tail shaft i made my self using the front half of an R33 tailshaft and the front half of the R32 tailshaft, i cut the center bearing section off the r32 bit and then mated it up with the R33 shaft, got the engineering shop next to my work to make me a sleve to sit inside both halfs of the shaft which was a tight yet perfect fit, then i tig welded the two together.

from the centre of the uni joint to the center of the center bearing the shaft needs to be 355mm long.

as for Crossmeber i reused my R32 one, and modifed it, so i have 3 out of 4 bolts holding it in place.

Speedo im yet to figure out :P

  • 4 weeks later...

bit of an update here...

got speedo all sorted, used a navara drive and it all works sweet. Now ive got a major drama with my clutch... after doing prac night at lala it was slipping in gear and while clutching it.. and its brand new! and since then just driving on the street and up hills it slipps like hell. So im pretty annoyed that i have to take the box out again!!

other then that, it slides pretty good with the extra torque... i got myself an AVCR and tried playing with it but i found that raising the boost with the stock ECU was pointless due to rich and retard(ed) mode... but i was still able to pull 4th gear entry's into Turn 1 at mallala which is something i couldnt do with the RB20 (i've got taller diff gearing to stock also) takes a bit of getting used to thats for sure as a normal 3rd gear entry is about 140 kph where as a 4th gear entry is 160 kph... so thats 20km faster for those slow on the uptake... needless to say i looped a couple of times while dealing with the faster speeds.

Next to come is a TSL remap using RB20 ecu, i'll run stock turbo for a while, new clutch and some more suspension work and general maintenance

    • Yeah 4wd (boosted) has a recess in the firewall for the booster, and 2wd is flat - the example in the link shows the flat surface. When you deleted the booster, did you just attach the factory slave cylinder directly to the recess in the firewall with no adaption?
    • Yes, but no. You need to keep the mating surfaces bare (ie the flat faces where the caliper and upright pads touch the dogbone) and also the internal threads will remain bare (unless there are no internal threads - do they use nuts on all the bolts?). So you can slow down obvious external corrosion, but not all of it. Anodising would be required to provide decent protection to the alloy, but I'm not actually sure if you should anodise something that is all about the strength. Anodising does reduce strength significantly. Like, up to 50% on some alloys for high thickness coating.
    • Thanks   does painting on aluminium work or stop them from corroding?
    • 'Sgot nothing to do with them being Japanese. The climate in the north of Japan has similarities to the UK - the cars are made in the knowledge that they have snow and salt, and they rot there. Cars made in the US rot like buggery in the US. British cars have always rotted regardless of the weather. They will rot indoors in a climate controlled bubble! The brackets are not unsafe yet, but they will get that way. They may well corrode where the bolt threads are in contact and the bolts could just jump out without warning.
    • So unsafe would you say now?   little bit of has come off, guess road salt is a nightmare for Japanese car. Mx5 here have a well known issue or rotting
