probably common knowledge but when you undo the bolts from the turbo (particularly the smaller ones subject to heat) instead of just pulling on the spanner to undo the bolts, give them a quick hard jerk (hitting it with you palm has the same effect). This will aid in 'cracking' the 'seal' on the bolt instead of just screwing/shearing the head off by slowly pulling on the spanner.

The front pipe can be pushed back and it just drops down, you don't need to take off the manifold.

Why is taking the turbo off the first thing your doing. If I suspected the turbo but wasn't sure I wouldn't be rushing in and ripping it off.

For start just take the intake pipe off and check for large amounts of shaft play, if not and you still suspect the turbo take the front pipe off get a mirror & light and inspect wether there's any damage to the turbine wheel. If it's a no to both of these and there's no excessive amounts of oil around the turbo or discolouration to the turbine housing the problem may not even be the turbo.
