As the toppic states i have come into a bit of trouble with my r33 gtst series1. Yesterday after a short drive i realised a loud tapping noise coming from the engine i poped the bonnet and it was even louder. It seems to get louder when you apply more throttle but im no mechanic i got a long handled screwdriver out and listened through the end of it and could hear the tapping coming from this part . The pic attached is one i found doing a search. In Red is the part the noise is coming from and the the Yellow indicates the belt attached to it. Whatever it is it is causing the belt to split from the edges so the question is. What part is it? Is it still safe to drive? and how much to fix it your help would be greatly appreciated thanks guys, cheers.

Hi,

It's your air conditioning compressor.. Best to take it to a radiator shop or an a/c shop..

Thanks,

Scott Roberts.

If the noise is there when the air cond is not on it could be the idler bearing ( seized , dry etc...) , thats the pulley whre the red line meets the yellow (bottom part) . With air cond off check to see it the air cond compressor turns ( it shouldn't ), just the pulley should spin . If it turns the clutch could be stuffed, Anyway if you dont care about air cond , just take the belt off, when you fix the problem then you put the belt back on .

is anyone else worried that the ac compressor is bolted to the block, and the noise could be a spun bearing?

i could be wrong (i hope i am), but get that belt off ASAP so you dont do any more damage if it is a bottom end problem.
