New Years Resolutions For Your Car.

Thought i could start a bit of chatter going about with things people are wanting to do to their cars, and if people wanted to chip in with tips or places to get things done, that would be sweet too.

Basically i want to get a few things done this year to her. In somewhat rough order of preference/requiredness here goes.

1. Fix that darned Exhaust leak - Its post turbo (not losing any boost) and its basically put a swarm of bee's in the induction sound, depending on the load/speed you're doing, it can sound anything from god dawned awful (idle) to pretty mean (we wont talk about how fast we're going). (Planned for when it gets her 80,000km service next week).

2. Rebush the whole car / sort its suspension out - pretty much all the rear subframe is shot, i have a slightly woofed lower control arm and the bushes up the front aren't all that pretty either. Problem is its ~$600 worth of bushes, ~$200 of lower control arm and about a day's work (according to Mark at Belco) to shove it all in and make it sit pretty again. The car is drivable, handles ok, but the inside of the rear tyres seem to be wearing somewhat quick (2 deg neg camber O.O). (Late Jan -> Feb)

3. Ditch the Pod, get a good cold air box - i like the suck, i really do, but it DOES get irritating after the 4th or 5th hour on the hume hwy to Melbourne. (Late Jan -> Feb)

4. A Bigger Turbo. I'm 194kw at the wheels, i want more - probably 260-280. And i want to really really feel like we're going places when you drop 2 gears for that Highway overtake. The PFC, FMIC, Fuel Pump etc are all there, just need a bit more ooomph. (Haha, when we get there - Tax Cheque maybe?)

So there is my list - what is everyone else out there dreaming/wanting?

I'd like to get mine resprayed mainly, but I doubt that's going to happen :nyaanyaa:

Power's fine for the moment, though something like an AFC Neo wouldn't go astray.

Other than that, nothing really, got bigger fish to fry

Bigger turbo 3037 but a garrett, attach it to my HKS cast manifold, intake and dump. Aim for 300 but settle for 270.

And I'm not selling unlike some of you other wishy washy types........lol, I'll enjoy the import scene while its going, even if it is in its twilight years.

    • Nah, it's not the reduced knock margin. It is a direct mechanical effect of having to initiate the combustion earlier, while the piston is still rising, which starts to exert combustion pressure on the rising piston earlier, making the rest of the engine work harder to finish driving the piston up to TDC where the combustion pressure stops being a negative and starts being a positive. Your modern engine that only needs ~10° to make MBT doesn't waste the other 10 or so degrees of crank rotation. That's almost all of it. The difference in knock margin might go either way. Remember that modern engines to which you are currently comparing the long tractor engine (the RB) are now running super high compression, direct injection, tricky cam control and maybe even cylinder pressure sensors. You're not comparing apples with other fruit. It's apples and sea weed, or some other evolutionarily primitive vegetation. And remember, squish only really comes into play at the very end of the stroke. It certainly does good things, but it is not the biggest contributor to what's going on. It is quite possibly much less important in 4 valve head than 2 valvers also, because there is so much less squish available to a 4 valve anyway.
    • Food for thought, a longer stroke motor would need less ignition timing vs. a shorter stroke motor requiring more ignition timing.
    • Thanks Duncan, HART is only 10 mins from me (I did my bike license there), it'd be awesome if it ran these types of things.  Sutton Road does look good and they take fewer cars than SMSP which is good.  Surely you have enough land to lay a few million tonnes of concrete and some sprinklers D?
    • I thought an engine that needs more ignition timing to make power is going to result in less power due to reduced knock margin? More time for the combustion to propagate -> more time for it to heat up the rest of the mix to detonation.
    • DCS, war thunder, IL2 - mostly flight sim games.
