The 116 knock does it happen alot? Have you put bad fuel?

Engine knock can be nothing as the std mic's "can" pickup noise from the surroundings.. or it CAN be very bad...

So...dunno if it keeps happening id take it to get it checked out, otherwise it may be bad fuel or something that changed recently.

hmm, yes ill be sticking to low boost until i get this sorted then i think.

anyway thanks for your insight fellas

cheers!

I will assume that you havent had your car tuned and you hammering around on the base tune.

1. Remove the Power FC and reinstall the factory ECU

2. Book the car in with a reputable tuner to have the Power FC setup correctly and your car properly tuned.

I thought my 92 was bad but 116... When does it do it, mine only knocks that bad in 3rd gear at high rpm with lots of load. At the moment I suspect my stocko fuel pump thats getting replaced with an 040 very soon.

Did you get the PFC tuned or did you just put in and drive away?

have a read of the technical and advanced sections in the power fc faq in my signature, it covers the common causes of knocking and how to correct them. well worth a read and will cover your problem

iv had it in for 2 weeks, i got it tuned by hit man penrith. god help me if i installed the thing.

so im rather concerned with whats going on, and everyone is on xmas break so i cant put it in anywere to get it sorted out.

Matt is a great tuner so perhaps there is something else going on thats causing the knock you are seeing.

Either way, get it checked asap

thanks man im reading through the pfc Faq now hopefully it can shed some light

Basically, just back off.

If its knocking, back off till you have time to see the tuner.

Its not major drama if your sensible about it and dont get up it every chance you can.

You can drive around. Just pay attention to knock levels.

It might be the tune, it might be something else causing it.

Only your tuner/workshop will be able to tell you how/why etc etc.

ive seen many PFCs with highish knock counts that when Datalogged show low counts but with a single high count and as your hand controller stores the max count you wont really know where the problem is so make sure your tuner has datalogit.

An example would be a log that counts many times a second with a count of say 8-120-8-8-8 often with the high number only coming up the one time per run but your hand controller showing this high number making you think it realy has a constant knock,This could be one missed load site with to much timing etc or as often happens some mechanical noise.

Datalogit will pin point it allowing you to find a reason for it.

If the light keeps flashing then its not a one of knock.

:sorcerer: Good point.

datalogits ability to plonk knock on the map and show map tracer view of it with min/avg/max is very handy and will certainly speed up knock debugging. but as per the FAQ it can be done with just the hand controller

Could be a bad batch of fuel.. i had similar problems although my knock levels were in the 70's .. put some octane booster in there if you are really concerned until you can book in a time.

Also get a mate to watch the hand controller when you are driving.. My mate had high knock levels in his car and we found out the levels were fine when he was giving it, the knock levels only jump up when he changes gears, so he just put it don't to some mechanical noise or something.

    • Thanks for your insight, it being basically useless will impact my decision for sure. I thought it may help the engine breath better I guess. But then again, I have also been told that tuning an RB20DE is also not worth it. Exactly, we follow EU Regulations. There is a bit more leeway on older vehicles. My Porsche 924 came without a cat from factory and managed to pass, they still mentioned that I have quite high emissions on it though.
    • My apologies, I stand corrected. Thanks for registering to mention this! And thank you for actually reaching out to the council to clarify. This is the sensible thing to do and the opposite of what I was alluding you were doing. I may have seen too much outrage and hate being fueled on the internet and it has made me a somewhat cynical old man. Sometimes it is easy to forget that there are real people behind websites and accounts. In my defence, CarExpert and CarExplore do read quite similarly at a glance. I shall try and do better in the future. (Please stick around to get the latest scoops on dealing with old Nissan shitboxes )
    • Don't bother. The poor little RB20 doesn't make enough gas flow to challenge the flow capabilities of even the littlest cat, and you won't make any extra power, and all you'll do it soot up your rear bumper. Plus....is Malta not runing under Euro regs?
    • Hey Daniel, sorry to hear that and thanks for posting up for us at a really hard time I only knew SmoothLine through the forums, we never met as we are based in different states, but when he was most active on here he was quite a while back so not many of the current crowd might remember him. I am pretty sure he was active in the Queensland SQU club but that is defunct now too (times are changing and we are all getting older). Farewell SmoothLine!
    • Turns out depending on whether the car was equipped with TCS or not there are different signals coming to the dash, meaning there are different speedo clusters.  Wired in a speedo calibrator box from aliexpress and now works fine.
