Moving To Adelaide

Hi folks,

Im a regular on the GTR owners site here in the UK and drive an R33 GTR which i have driven for over 2 years now and love it.

Im looking at emegrating to somewhere around the Adelaide area---why--im not really sure to be honest. After reading up and searching the web it seams that Adelaide could be the place for me to settle.

Im trying to find the good areas which you guys would like to live in Adelaide and also the ones which i should avoid.

It doesnt need to be in the city centre--but i do need good local schools for my youngest and university closer by for my oldest daughter.

Do you have any links to local properties for sale in Adelaide to give me an idea as to how far my money would stretch ( aprox 300-500 AUS$ ).

I need an area with good employment oppertunities--does Adelaide offer this?

Lastly tell me something you like about Adelaide which would make me want to settle there..

It will be at least 1 year before i emegrate so plent of time but this is the start of my research....

sorry to the lads that live there (i actually lived in salisbury nth for quiet sum time so i speak from experiance)

i love adelaide because its not too far from everything we have some nice beaches down south and some nice wine country up north both 2 - 2.5 hrs drive.

we also DONT have a gay mardi gra parade

all in all i love adelaide and wont be moving in the near future or distant

we also have the name of "the city of church's" but unfortuanletly alot have been turned into pubs or bridal shops any ways,

Thanks for the reply.Still not sure where we are going to go as yet but quite possible around the Adelaide area if we can find some nice areas.

Is there plenty of job oppertunities around or am i better trying somewhere else?

Whats the tyical price of a 3/4 bedroom house in a nice quiet area?

house prices depend on how close to the city you want to be . we are 35 mins by train to the city .and brought a 7 yr old 4 bedroom house with family room and large garage 60 ft x20 ft on half acre for around 350k. the lifstyle is a lot more laid back and relaxed than melbourne or sydney and also houses are a shit load cheaper .i have lived here all my life and love it . altho i have heard it described as a place for newly weds and nearly deads lol

ps if your a bit of a yuppy norwood might be a good place for ya lots of cafes and 10 mins from the city

You should be able to find a good property in your price range, with nice houses starting around 230 in some OK areas, more in the better areas. I guess the better areas are usually considered to be the Eastern Suburbs, Glenelg and the City.

Another option would be to look at country homesteads (I have just done this), which can be within half an hour of the city by car (at the speed limit). Adelaide is nestled on a plain surrounded by hills, so its not far and the views can be spectacular.

It might be easier to rent for 6 months first and then you can see what’s on the market whilst you are here.

Have you budgeted for another car when you arrive? We have some great roads around here - Twisty hills runs, fast sweeping country roads.

What line of work are you in? It might help in selecting one area over another.

Adelaide is a great place, more like a very large country town.

The weather may take a while to get used to, (heat in summer) but its fantastic. Think Spain or the French Riviera.

Lots to see and do, great wine regions, lots of pubs, affordable living, plenty of sporting and cultural events.

Again--Thanks guys.We will be applying for a full residency shortly which can take 12-18 months.From there we will take a 2 week holiday to have a look around. At that point we will look for rental accom to give us time and find out if Adelaide is right for us. Looking through the real estate agencies to help look at our cost of living and again it seem favourable compared to here in Scotland.We should be moving around July/August next year so hopefully the weather doesnt take to long to get used to as thats out summer months ( 18-25 degrees )

I am a manager in the medical supplie bussiness but did 6 years as a pcb manager in a fast moving production based industry.I also run a small bussiness doing metal polishing ( car parts for show cars etc ) and would be keen to start this up again at some point along with car detailing. The wife is a trained vet nurse but is finishing her science degree ( could go lab technition or go into teaching with an extra year studying ).So we have various ideas on our next jobs.

Which areas surrounding Adelaide would be suited to a nice quiet family life but still good fo the kids. I was thinking one of the newer built areas--so which would you choose within easy driving distance from Adelaide.

I've grown up down south (Moana way) and love it.

The beaches are awesome, the air is clean/fresh, crime rates low/insurance cheaper, big open roads, not cramped up. Plenty of shopping (Collonades & Superbarn complexes) Love it.

Its also a few degree's cooler than in closer to Adelaide.

It is however ~40mins away from the City. BUT 17mins is on the southern expressway so its a nice easy drive.

As I've grown up down south I also know what area's to try and steer clear of..

Christies Downs (housing trust), Hackham West (housing trust) and the not so bad but not good Morphette Vale.

Moana, Moana Heights, Seaford, Pt. Noarlunga South on the west side of commercial road gets my Vote.

I've just finished a Course at Flinders University. Which is ~17mins from the southern Moana Area.

I am currently living with my other half up around finders but I won't live here as within a few years we have lost 2 cats due to snakes, 2 friends I know in the same area; 1 has lost his cat another got their cat to the vet in time and it was ok. So bugger this area.

Morphette Vale is a good suburb but only the new part, a 4 bedroom house will be around 280- 320 and its only 25 mins from the city.

Correct. But they are far more prelevant in the flagstaff hill area due to the Gorge and inland.

If you don't like snakes it really is as simply as living near the beach away from creeks and keep your own garden tidy.

With regards to insurance.. The price difference between Moana and say Flagstaff Hill (the dearer) for myself was almost $200 per year.

Up north has smelly air and is hotter in summer.

Down south is more so a beach bum laid back type life style.

The paths?? No paths through sandhills down Moana way (apart from southport which is crappy anyway). So no snakes.

I used to do surflife saving at Southport for some years through my early to late teens, only saw one snake in the sand hills in all those years but I did see a big arsed Rats and heaps of rabbits on many occasions.

I was comparing Flagstaff Hill to Moana, not Semaphore with rugged sand hills.

But generally speaking... Inland there's more snakes than near a 'tidy' beach such as pt noarlunga south, seaford and moana.

lol at Maslins.. You mean home of the genital piecing. When we used to cruise around on our deadly treadlys we went for a ride down Maslins beach, got the shock of our lives. All old fogies with pierced genitals. :S
