Maybe we should learn this by heart:)

Now, keep in mind mind that if you are a P plater, you only have 6 demerit points, whereas, if you possess a full licence, you have 12. Also, if you do lose demerit points, it will take you 3 years to regain it/them back.

Demerit Point Offences No. of Points

10 points lost:

Drivers subject to zero BAC with a BAC of between 0.00% and .05%

Drivers subject to .05% BAC with a BAC of .05% but less than .07%

8 points lost:

Exceed speed limit by 45km/h or more (12 month suspension)

6 points lost:

Exceed speed limit by 35km/h or more but less than 45km/h (6 month suspension)

4 points lost:

Exceed speed limit by 25km/h or more but less than 35km/h (1 month suspension)

3 points lost:

Exceed speed limit by 10km/h or more but less than 25km/h

Disobey traffic lights, signs or police directing traffic

Fail to give way or stop

Drive without wearing a helmet (motorcycle), seat belt, or a properly adjusted and fastened seat belt, or with an unrestrained passenger under 16

Drive on wrong side of double lines,or divided highway

Risk colliding with alighting, boarding or waiting tram passengers

Driving contrary to a major defect notice

Careless driving

Using a hand held mobile phone while driving

Driving with an obscured or improperly displayed number plate

2 points lost:

Improper overtaking or passing

Turn or stop without signalling

Turn improperly

Fail to keep left

1 point lost:

Exceed speed limit by less than 10km/h

Driving contrary to a minor defect notice

Fail to dip headlights

Driving at night without headlights and tail lights on

Follow too closely

Now, take a close look at some of those offences, notice how gay some of them are?!?!?! Do you really want to get booked for that kind of crap??? Don't want to lose your licence over something stoopid and small. I got a friend who only had 1 point left and he got dicted cos he only had his park lights on, he forgot to put head lights on full. How gay is that, losing your licence over headlights. Hope this helps

whats a demerit point? :P

Thing is most people are just like me.. speed..get to 10 or 11 or something..drive slowly for 3 years.. get them back.. hoon around for a year or two.. loose most of them again.. go back to driving around slow again. Its pretty stupid really - is it really altering driving behaviour? Nope! only for a while because you have to, not because you think its a good idea or you have "changed your ways". Isn't that whole thing with the demerit point system? I think as i get older i will drive faster.. Imagine being 60 pulled over doing 180 in a 60 zone ..hehehe

btw vick: I think it is 12 points also on your P's though. Where did u here otherwise? I couldn't find any mention of p-platers only having 6. You have 6 in Sydney but we are in melbourne

yes this is true altho while p platers have a max of 12 in 3 years (like everyone else) they cannot get more than 6 in any 12 month period. I dunno if the 6 in 12 months thing has actually come in yet.

You get an option notice. You can either lose the licence for 3 months or keep it and go on a 12 month "good behaviour bond" and not get any points in that period. If you get a point in the 12 months you lose it for 6 months.

If you are on your P's and you lose your license, your P-plate period will be extended. This also has ramificiations for insurance premiums... so its not a great idea.

If you are old like me :P you have the option of having your license suspended for 3 months (greater if more than 15 points incurred).. or continue driving and not receive any demerit points whatsoever for a whole year - near impossible I think under the current revenue raising environment. If you break that year, the default suspension period is doubled :P

The benefit of the suspension is you get all your 12 points back again

There's no difference between demerit points for P-platers or Full licence holders (in Victoria). Everyone has 12 over a 3-year rolling period.

However, if you exceed 6 points you get send a courtesy letter in the mail advising this (no penalty).

I've never heard of a limit of 6 in 12 months, is this new?

Its true, more than 6 points in a year is a loss of some sort if ur on p's...

I recall getting a notice about it when i lost points late last year...

Solution to the problem? move to beautiful queensland where the sun shines and the cops are champions, lol... well, they are better than vic cops anyway! :P

http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/ has everything u need, but some of it is a bit hard to find. Do a search on "demerit points" and it will tell you.

Denham: Exceeding the speed limit by 45km/h or more = 8 points and 12 months (thats what it has listed in victoads anyway):

yep.. i certainly have learnt my lesson. lost all of my 12 points..

once you lost all your 12 points, vicroads will send you a letter to ask you to choose one of these options:

1) Loose your licence for 3 months

2) Be on good behaviour bond for 1 year, and if you get caught speeding within that year, you will loose your licence for 6 months.

Anyway, I picked option 2 and lucky enough didn't get caught speeding for the whole year, after that you will get your 12 points back again :) :) This is another method to get your points back instead of waiting for 3 years :) , although it is a cost factor though :(
