Long Drive

hay guys

going to be driving my 34 GTT up to karratha next week which is like 1600km's or there abouts.

I have never done this drive but was wondering what things to do befor i go? or ways to save some fuel.

i will be doing a oil/filter change this week and all the normal checks, but is there any thing else to check?

Fuel consumption will be good because you will be cruising, but I think if you need 98 octane fuel you need to pack the jerry cans like me & Shayde did because I'm sure you won't be able to get it not far out of Perth

Check your tyre pressures & bring along basic tools just in case something becomes a bit loose with the bumpy roads.

at long constant high speeds make sure u pump up your tyres to about 41psi

i just did a defensive driving course and its reccomended 32psi for short low speed trips 41psi for long high speed ones and 36psi for a good all round inbetween

long drives will actually increase the pressure in your tyres without putting any air in them just from heat and friction so if you have 41 psi in them to start with they will end up about 50 psi and u will be wearing out the centre of the tyre from over inflation

nope thatts the common myth, because theyre steel radials theyre made to handle it, they will be flat on the bottom, its if you unde inflate them though they will buckle and the middle will sit off the gound and the shoulders will wear, such as...

That speed added a sort of stablisation in the tyre and that long higher speed drives required a lower pressure...

Visit bp.com.au and check if BP Ultimate is available along the way. That was pretty much mine and Nathan's only concerns with the trip. I found I had best economy when I just with nothing on except for the stereo and with the window down. I tried using just the fan at the start and compared it to having the passenger window down a fraction.. and fan off lost.

Also, if you have a FMIC, you can put aluminium fly wire in front of it like I did. Saves trying to pick bugs out for the rest of your life... and best thing to get bugs off your paint is Windex surface cleaner.

i dont have a real need for 98 as the car is stock besides for cat back, only thing im worried about is the oil temp. in the city it gets to like 90-110degrees which i throught was high ne way.

will do other stuff what ya say thou

should always be running 98 anyways, im pretty sure thats with a 34 anyways, i know 32 was reccomended from factory to use nothing less, i would assume that would be the case with any performance/turbo car ?

not sure, i always run it on 98 in perth any way, i throught they recommended 95 premium? but i am most probly wrong

take some CD's.... Lots. Preferably Phil Colins, perhaps even some Eminem just to mix it up abit lol. Make sure you have enough fuel to drive THROUGH NANUTARRA without stopping, fuel bandits. I think unleaded is like $1.80 something through there.

Fortescue roadhouse is a couple hundred kays up the road and a lil more reasonable price wise.

Pretty sure you cant get ultimate after Coral Bay, but i doubt youll be pulling into there. Carnarvon also has ultimate

98 octane all the time man...its the best for ya car and you will get better kays from the tank...

its nearly a crime to put anything less than 98...

bottles of octane booster like arkon suggested... so if you HAVE to fuel up with 95 then you can bump it up a couple so hopefully its only 97ish...

even then i would put just enough to get to a BP... it hurts my soul to drive on anything less

Ive driven my car to perth and back to Broome. 2200km inland road approx. Definately bring the octane boost, 2 or 3 bottles will do. Most places have premium 95 octane, with a couple 98. I only fuelled up at 4 places on a 1 way trip and that was with 1 jerrycan. From broome 2 years ago, cost me about $380 in fuel and octane boost.

Sandfire, headland, newman, wubin. and then the jerrycan. Im pretty sure thats how it went. Roughly 450kms to a tank, and thats off bp 95 octane with octane boost.

Stick to 100-110km/h as anything over your doing 3000rpm or more (in a SII R33 Sedan 5 Speed anyway).

Do all the oil, water, tyre pressure checks before you leave, and check tyre press at each fuel stop (i did, i got a techhhhhh screw through a tyre at poxy sandfire roadhouse, 300km from anywhere).

good luck and dont stress too much. The RBs handle that trip with ease.
