Your not ready for a Turbo Car.

Period. Stop pretending your better then everyone else and except the fact you have too learn how too drive.

I hope your at least referring too 100cc Sprint Karts ? Karting will help your reflexs, thats it. Karting will never prepare you for road use. It actually might be the think that gives you OVERCONFIDENCE and result in you attending a funeral.......

well if i come across that im trying to be better then everyone else sorryi dont mean to be.

btw they were 125cc Rotax

If you want to get one, then get one but here is my advice

Dont skimp on insurance - if it gets stolen, bye bye $15k or whatever you spent on it. Theres nothing more fun than paying off a car you dont own anymore because you decided 3k was too much.

Just remember, you looking at 10 year old cars. Things break. If you cannot find them from a wrecker they have to be brought in through Nissan, via Japan - its not cheap to get parts

Be prepared to open your wallet . On a apprenticeship wage i doubt you would have much money left after insurance, fuel, car repayments, and whatever other bills you have - i could be wrong, but thats the way it goes for most of us. Ive seen guys eating 2min noodles every day because they cant afford to go food shopping.

If its still really what you want, then you will enjoy the skyline world

Good luck

Everyone needs to remember a skyline is only as fast as your right foot.

Take that into consideration and they are quite an easy car to drive.

ye but with that power potential, as if u wouldnt be tempted to feel the power. Its pretty easy to drop your foot too

Don't buy a turbo for a first car, that would be stupid, a non turbo is already putting out 200BHP, more than enough for a first car.

As for insurance, buy comprehensive, i was looking at another thread, someone bought their dream Godzilla (R32 GT-R), it got stolen and now he has a bill to pay with no car.

I went R31 -> R34

Personally I think the R31 makes a great first car.

Car + Rego + Insurance and you'll still have change from $5k. They're unbreakable unless you wrap it around a tree, with enough power to still be scary in the wet.

And you'd still have the fuel bill of a "real" skyline :glare:

I first i thought everyone was over reacting a bit but on second thoughts i agree totally with them. My parents had a big say in my first car which was a 1991 manual celica. (Ofcourse I wanted a 180 or gt4 or skyline) but is was a good car to learn in which i drove for three years before getting my gtst. I was able to do quite a few modifications which kept things interesting, mostly cosmetic, rims, lowered, tint etc etc and even with a relatively low powered car (compared with the gtst) i still managed to stack it in the wet cos i thought i was the worlds best driver... :pirate: god knows what could of happened if it was a gtst and not my 100kw cel. Believe me i know plenty of kids who got quick cars as there first (generally parent funded) and saw a lot of them crashed or written off.

I sold the gtst about a half a year ago and bought a manual 1998 r33 gts25t (I am now 18), it is a awsome car and once again will it will bite you in the ass very badly in the wet if you dont know what your doing. It is resonable cheap to run, gets anywhere from 450-500kms to a full tank depending on how you drive it, and so far has been very reliable.

car get a r32 gts :woot:

Btw that fuel economy is unbeleivable! i'm averaging 300 to 330km per tank, you are very lucky.

i am in the lucky position of having driven a few decent cars in my life and at the age of 29, i can say i have "never" been in an accident...

...but actually, that is bending the truth a little. I in fact put both of my first 2 cars sideways and FORTUNATELY hit nothing but empty roadspace - and no witnesses. The cars were - an automatic 95 Excel and a 93 Swift GTi......

If anyone thinks a young car enthusiast is not going to attempt to push the limits once in a while, you're having a pull. It was easy enough to get these 2 FWD shitboxes into trouble....i hate to think how i would have ended up if i'd had 2.5ltrs of forced induction under my (non)control.

Since then, i've had a 93 GTIR, 98WRX and now 99 GTT, but growing up with affordable, fully insured, underpowered FWDs was the best thing i ever did for my driving sense.

Please dont be another tool who buys a Skyline and doesnt fully insure it. You will not live down the "i told you so's" when it all comes unstuck.

PS: the excel WAS a shitbox, but the swift was prolly the most fun car ive owned to date. Many weekends were spent getting mods done - exhaust work, cold air induction, better tyres, tweaking the adjustable suspension, ignition timing, brake pads, track sprints, drags etc. all to get every last drop of performance out of it. You CAN have a lot of fun with cars you may not have considered.

I totally agree with what everyone has said so far.

Just wanted to add something that no one has covered yet.

And that is owning a turbo/hi-po car desensitises you to G-forces.

You really dont want 0 to 100km/h in 6 seconds to feel "normal"

You dont want taking corners at 70km/h (on the street) to feel "normal"

You know what I mean?

If this is your standard you will get in to trouble very quickly. Inexperience and a hi-po car is very dangerous.

If you want to have some fun, up grade the brakes and syspension on your paseo and learn to drive... Buy your Skyline when you are 21+ looking back from then you will thank yourself lol.

Yea i used to get around about 500km when it was completly stock and if i drove it like a grandma with the occasional bit of boost, now i have a catback and decat pipe and running the "highboost mod" and usual get just over 400km, thats driving to work in the morning, driving home at lunch then driving back to work, then driving home after work everyday, and also giving it the ocasional boost once in a while, so yea its still pretty good on gas but will be even better once i get my power fc tuned, theres actually a few people on this forum that also got the same mileage as me when there cars were stock, it all depends on how you drive it.

youre driving in a toyota paseo... and you think youre ready for a skyline? :)

I don't know why ppl always go on about a skyline being so hard to drive. I bought an R34 gtt with minor mods as my first car when i was 19, drove the hell out of it, and never had a problem, all about knowing the limits spose and being responsible. I think the early Commodoers and Falcons are much worse in the wet.

The 34 is probably one of the easiest cars to drive.

Third Party Property shud set u back around $500. Get a good alarm and enjoy the car while ur young.

I have never insured my R33 GTST, and it has spent 5 years in North West NSW with kangaroo's, rabbit's and foxes. When people say if you cant insure you cant afford the car - well in 5 years @ $4000 a pop (im 23) I have saved myself $20k - and bought a house :miner:

Cheers

yeh but its the reason its called an 'accident' when u crash it, something that u cant predict

been drivin close to a year and i just got myself a r33 gtst series at 18, and i pay 2200 insurance, hoping it'll drop next yr

from previously driving a civic for a year, i now take corners slower than a civic, like a granny as i have read the forum and everyones advice is to be careful of the rear of these cars.

good luck

Hi all. I have a question that relates to this thread.

I am also looking to buy a skyline which will be my second car, Ive had a Ford Laser for 4 years lol. I am looking to buy an R34 GT-T around $30K and then have it insured.

I am 23 have lost my license for 6 months before because of too many demerit points and im on about $42k a year.

Does anyone think I can afford a car like this or is it too much? also would anyone like to estimate how much my insurance would cost?

Thanks.

look man. if you want a Skyline buy a skyline...

if your goin to get 3rd party... dont park it anywhere stupid, always have it locked up at nite in the shed. make sure you got a alarm. and a club lock for when ever you park it.

When you do park it... park it where ever one can see it. in front of the lift of the carpark or front of the door way. Never on the street. if you have to leave it out the front of someones place. park it in there drive.

ive had my line for 6months. on third party. ive had no probs, but i never park it anywhere stupid. plus i only drive it 2-3times a week. i have a run around for work.

Plus on wet days/nites. try not to drive it. drive ya sisters car. or wateva. try not to drive it in the wet. Even no my car is non turbo (gts25) if you come into a round about with abit of speed and hit it... you will diff throw the ass end out in the wet & dry......

just drive and park it sensable and you wont have any probs....

im 18 to and my first car was a 31 with a worked Na engine went very well..... so i kinda started off slower. even no i still think my old 31 is quicker than my car now....

lol ill stop goin on and on and on now.......

Ok i think i have a hard thing to pull off here but im going to try. I'm almost 17 in march and thats when i can get my p's. I want to get a skyline, 180sx, soarer or something nice like that. Problem is insurance, money and my parents. I think i might be able to get money to get a R33 (hopefully) from a loan off my mum. But insurance is going to kill me. I want to at least get third party insurance and i would like to get full comprehensive insurance but its just too exspensive. Do any of you guys know of a good insurer besides justcars that is ideal for a person in my situation. Also i need to figure out what car would be best for me, i really want a turbo but i really havent got much skills in mechanics all i know how to do is change the oil and oil filter on a basic commodore.

Any suggestions on what car i should get and why would be helpful and also good insurers:). Thanks guys.

btw i live in QLD.. so the difference in laws and w/e.

you'r gonna be one of them idiots on the roads that thinks their cool speeding around in a skyline..for sure ull be ripping the shit outta it once you get it..stick with the lil toyota first. ;)

catch.

:) Shiiite!!!!

I can't believe the BS being shoved down this poor kids throat.

A Skyline, whatever type it is, is still only a RWD (or 4WD if you have the $$) car sold to the masses. The vast majority are not much up in the performance stakes or any harder to drive than a lot of other cars out there. It aint an F1 McLaren or some such and the power to weight on most isn't anything exceptional to write home about.

Of course there are exceptions and plenty of them hang on forums like this one. We may all aspire to having the 450+rwhp GTR or such like but not many get there.

If you can't drive around a "round about" in the wet without hanging out the rear I suggest you need to seriously look at how you drive cause it sounds pretty shithouse to me or you have absolutely zero self control and in that case you are just an accident waiting to happen. All I hope is you don't take some other poor sucker out with you.

If the guy wants to hand over his folding stuff and face the issues around insurance and upkeep - its his call.

Personally I think he has sadly underestimated how much a turbo skyline can really cost to keep running as it should be, but for some there is only one way to learn (- and I hope Mum or Dad will help you out occassionally cause you will likely need it.) But that is only my opinion and unfortunately they're like assholes, everyone has got one - some just use them more.

Let the kid live his dream now if he wants to.

Kodak it's your call, you make it.

Just try real hard not to become a statistic or show up as one of those dicks cutting up in public ruining it for the rest of the performance car crew.

Nuff said.

Let the flame begin! :P

I have to slightly agree with this... And guys he did say stock33... not a 250kw 33...I think you can gain experience with the 33! Just keep it on the track and outta the streets!

Though on the note of insurance.... i think u shouldnt get the car if u cant afford the insurance plus repairs and servicing! thats just my opinion.

Think about getting a non turbo then uprading or even a VT commodore/falcon etc.

You have so many years to get a dream car, im talking 30+years... Doesnt hurt to save while ur young and get ur insurance off to a good start.

I respect your decision of asking on the forum and all the best matey!
