Law On Where Number Plates Should Be Mounted?

Recommended Posts

got pulled over today, on chapel st, on the way to chasers. nothing new, cops had a quick check of the car. my exhaust doesnt clear the 10cm ride height by 0.1mm, cop goes he could fine me for that and canary, but he wont.

then he asked why i hav my plates on the side. i go its visible from 45 deg, so i dont see the problem. he goes yeh ur right..

he let me off and said, fix the clearance and plates should be in the middle. he said that both ''defects'' are marginal..so i guess i got the benefit of the doubt.

There should be no further dispute, this clarifies it perfectly. Take it to court Darren.

But you see, if the coppers wanted to they could raise a whole new issue.

1. Your number plate is cut

2. You car is a post-1996 model car with an aftermarket front bar. According to VicRoads, cars manufactured post 1996 are NOT allowed to have aftermarket body kits as the kits change the crash dynamics of the cars, specifically pedestrian impacts.

I am not sure if you would win either as the number plate is mounted on angle off the perpendicular to the vehicle travel direction. Cops could argue that this causes issues with reading the numberplate off the 45 degree angle.

(I will search for the body kit regulations, but found them a long long time ago)

Either way, if its licence loss, give it a go.

He has not been fined for a modified number plate (Which I believe is a fine they can give you)

Therefore I believe the court can not take that into consideration when hearing him on a visibility of plate fine.

Same goes for the front bar.

Also if you stand up in front of the magistrate and they are convinced you were not intentionally breaking the law and were not aware of the law. They will withdraw the fine and put you on good behaviour thingy. (Can't remember the name of it) It's also worth while to dress nice and explain what a good boy you always are.

Ye, he is lucky though that he has not been charged with that.

So was i (cut numberplate aswell). Just dont take any pics or anything as your defence

All you are contesting is the charge itself. And the fact that a Supp Reg states that its legal, and the info Marcus also posted... just contest the charge itself and nothing more or you'll dig yourself a hole

Sorry, assumed by the fact that you had a series 8 front bar that it was a series 8.

You CAN get extra charges put on you in court, its just much much more difficult for the police officers to do that. Thats why when you get booked you cop as many charges as possible and 1/2 or more get dropped, thats the easiest way for the coppers.

Sorry to dig up old threads guys...

But I got done the other weekend about my side mounted plates. Long story short, I was pretty much 'suggested' to pay this fine by the cop issuing the fine (3 demerit points + $121) by him telling me that he was being 'lenient' on me by not giving me another fine for $185 (can't remember what he said it was for) and another 3 demerit points, which would of seen me lose my license. The more I think about it, and having read this thread/the legal documents attached, I shouldn't have to take this.

Wondering how Daz went with this? Just PM'd him waiting for an answer, anyone else been through this?

I don't mind paying the fine, but the demerit points seem a little unfair considering, if anything, I'm trying to make the plates stand out MORE and not less!

Out of interest, why is your plate side mounted? The 34 skyline has provision for it being centrally mounted and by the look of the bar in your picture (not sure whether it is stock or not), that also looks like it has provision. One of the key points from Ash's post was Daz's bar didnt have that.

Would be interested to hear how Daz went too though. :D

lol i was the actually writing of this law so then i can print on paper and have it in my glub box just incase i get pulled over by this and say here idiot where does it say i cant have it there hahahahahahahhahah be priceless lol

Oh what a load, on my old Bar i had the plate on the side, cops pulled it over trying to find something to get me on and didnt even say anything about the plates!!!!

i think you just got a cop who was having a bad day!!! always fight the law because there is always a chance of you winning (well within reason LOL)

Well my mate actually done it for me, he worked on my car and put the plates there, I thought it looked OK and so I left it there. I've driven past numerous cops and been checked over before, never heard the one about the plates though.

Besides, I dunno how many of you have Custom Mix number plates, but they only come in one standard size (372x132mm) and the cooler on is 600x300mm, so the plates literally block half the cooler. My car never had a SMIC in the first place. Also the cooler piping on the side of the car with the plates blocking it looks messy and the plates hide the mess. If these plates came in slimline like normal plates, I would get them, but alas, you can't.

KIRAS, this cop just wanted to fine me for something, he virtually done a RWC on my car and spent 15 minutes with me and that was all he fined me for. But like I said, 3 demerit points for this is pathetic, maybe I should run a red light and get snapped by a camera doing it to prove my plates are visible? :):ermm:

Lol you would need one hardcore legal team for that case. Trying to get out of one offence as the other should technically not have happened if the first one could occur. Confusing....

    • Update time!  The JZX110 had some maintenance needing to be done, so a lot of the seals with replaced to fix some oil leaks. Also used this opportunity to whack on a front mount that I'd bought some time ago.  I also finally got the rear lip painted and fitted.  I then got the exhaust done. It's just a catback for now. Custom made 3" stainless with a turn down. I could have a tip coming out, but it will require cutting the rear lip and possibly the bumper itself. So far I do like and it's made the car a little more zippy.  Close out with some nice pictures of the cars and a sneak peek of what's next.

    • Just something I found searching for more info on Emotion R, apparently the ECR33 Skyline GTS25t was either originally black, or there were two of them, the black one being the original demo car, then building a white one which was part of the 1997-onwards (to at least 2008!) Cockpit Tatebayashi Tokyo Auto Salon booth demo cars. It appears that Emotion R closed down in 2008 and was declared bankrupt in 2010: http://bank-db.com/hasan/208365. Scan of a magazine with the black R33 from 1996: Wayback machine archived page from May, 2000: https://web.archive.org/web/20000529061027/http://www.emotion-r.co.jp/skyline.html Option magazine with a few photos from the Cockpit Tatebayashi booth at the Auto Salon from various years: 2002: http://www.jdm-option.com/photo/index.php?action=item&category_id=154&image_id=3507 2003: http://www.jdm-option.com/photo/index.php?action=item&category_id=137&image_id=3033 2005: http://www.jdm-option.com/photo/index.php?action=item&category_id=116&image_id=1831 In 2008 Cusco website mentions that the Cockpit Tatebayashi ECR33 was displayed at that year's Tokyo Auto Salon: https://www.cusco.co.jp/event/2008/12/post_735.html As of 2021 it appears that the ECR33 demo car ended up being exported to Florida, USA: https://rmcmiami.com/inventory/1996-nissan-skyline-r33-cockpit-tatebayashi-demo-car-big-te06-turbo-endless-brakes-lsd-450hp/ And finally here's Google streetview of the Emorion R garage in 2023 which is amazingly not only still there, but the showroom is still full of various parts in stock and funishings, etc.: https://maps.app.goo.gl/ttyEAZdZLyzermyT9 Apologies for nerding out a bit. I used to love doing this 20 years ago on SAU and got a bit nostalgic for a moment... 😅
