Sorry cubes for once i have to disagree with you, as the rb20 i have delt with, the owner ran no timing cover and broke the half moon/dowel off, we ended up fixing it(after trying gtr cams to no success)by lining up the recess of the cas with where we could see the dowel used to be, and fitting it, it had a course spline, so we just had to make sure it was on the correct one. However if this was the case, and it was fitted out one spline off, there is no way the car would run as the ignition timing would be at a guess 240 degrees out, as i believe the spline is 6 sided.

Interesting, Ive been around a while and every single RB engine I have ever had apart has had a spline drive CAS thats located in position by a "half moon" dowl.

IF the half moon dowl is broken off (a VERY easy thing to do if the CAS is stuck and you hit it with a hammer etc) then the CAS can be put in a spline out or worse.

I had a GTR the other day with the dowl broken off. It ran retarded till put back into its correct position.

6 sided spline would put the timing out approx 60 degrees for every spline its out, and YES it will just run if its retarded by the splines.

I had better pull mine back off and have a better look as I swear mine had no spline just a simple half moon dowl.

I have seen a rb20t exhaust cam that had the dowl sheered off, there was nothing more than a little stub, no spline as such on the exh. cam at all. But again maybe I didn't look hard enough. :S
