depending what model Excel it is they have hydrolic lifters and they are not adjustable.

That said lifter noise is fairly common with the Excel.

we got a 94 jackaroo that makes heaps of tappet noise, give it a floggin for 15 minutes and it stop for about a month....try that. lol

Its probably gone the way as both my 2 sisters cars have.

1st sister... bran new ford festiva, thrashes the crap out of it never changes oil or filter, occasionally tops up when the motor starts getting noisy. She's been through 1 motor and 1 gearbox. :S

2nd sister, bought a new new lancer, drives it brisk in and out of traffic like women do. A couple of weekends ago I noticed the motor was noisy, no oil on the dip stick. :S

sounds like my sister, drives 30km's to work with an overheating engine and somehow doesn't notice it. That was one roasted engine. I have never seen an engine that was that easy to turn over by hand even with the plugs in.

my mums last car, excel did the same thing. It started at 17,000kms and was serviced by the book!

my gf has one, i have only used castrol magnatec and mobil synth s 10w-40 both changed 5-7000kms and i have found that the hydraulic lifters are quieter with the mobil synth s oil, but tend to get noisy at the end of the oil change interval again, so try a different oil.

.....and my gay brother. Lend him a car for year with a 5l of oil and first time I drive it after getting it back it's rattling its head off. Only took about 3l of oil to get it back to normal oil level
