Whats Going On ? Melbourne Out Of Power?

I was stuck in my office for 20 minutes because all our doors are electrically operated and i forgot about emergency exits. Took me about 10 minutes to work up the balls to cross from some offroad near the corner hotel, across 8 lanes and onto hoddle, scary shit..

power was out in endeavour hills but not in dande north. bro was at home alone and doesnt have a clue bout anything. so when power goes off he calls dad. now when you put my dad and bro together 2+2 usually makes 3.

bro ends up playing around with the mains switches at home under instruction from dad over the phone. didnt work so he was told to put it bak to what it was

anyway i got home, and power was still out, so no air con. after 30 mins i call mum in dande, she says she called a friend of hers and confirms power is still out in the 'hills. now about 6.30 and im literally dripping.

finally got fed up and went to check the mains switches. what do i see but all the switches turned off and even some of the fuses just lying around!! simple replacement and sweet air con was mine to enjoy.

dunno what u were doing but we dont have ripple control in Vic so there is no remote switching of controled load such as hot water and air con, if the fuses were out, some1 took them ok.

In the not to distant future the use of controled loads such as Air Con wil come at a price on these days. Both the elec distribution and retail companies buy electricty at varying prices every 30min according to demand..I had a quick look at the demand price per MWh yesterday and it went though the roof. However the real issue was that one of the interstate suppies used for meet peak demand requirements was taken off line due to the bushfires...

So what can u expect in the future?

Currently u will be on a fixed tariff setup either flat rate or peak off/peak for fixed times during the day. The new systems to be deployed by 2008 will allow more felxability and in reality help these companies make you, the customer, pay for these peak demand times by varying tarriff rates for controlled load especially...in fact you the customer will probably have visability of this and depending on what u signed up for, might even have ur load shed automatically in these situtaions.

In additiont he distribution companies in your area i.e. AGL, SPAusnet, Cipower/POwercore will have the ability to shed you power and esp. controlled loads such as air con remotely under peak times under the banner of network safety. It comming,...just like water saving, the old days are going to end soon.

Yes it was... Footscray power came back at 6pm and my work at Collins st was as cold as ice, i was wearing a jacket in my office. LoL

I work for Powecor and this is the first I've heard of it? 2008 is very soon to get a system like that underway. Maybe only in small areas as a trial. In the late 80's and 90's there were a few zone substations around melboure that had UFA which stands for Urban Feeder Automation where they could control hot water services coming on and off by sending high frequency signals into the powerlines. Anyway, it's all pretty much all been pulled out because it failed dismally. I think one of the problems with the system was that distribution transformers would trap the high frequencies if there were Delta windings. If it's a direct line with no circuit breakers and windings then it's ok like PLC (Powerline carrier) which is used in SPAusnets transmission lines for intertripping. It works very effectively but on the lower scale for every house it's a big job! At the moment I think load shedding will remain how it is and how it worked yesterday, just rotating who is off for how long to reduce the load.

The problem yesterday is that the 330kV feed from the Snowy scheme (NSW) between Dederang Terminal Station and South Morang Terminal Station tripped off because of the fires and they had to wait until CFA would allow them to fix it. Apparently we get up to 30% of our power from snowy on heavily loaded days like yesterday and with that gone... we had to load shed! I do agree that it will probably happen but I don't think it will be that soon.

I thought the power was bought in 5 min intervals?

    • The old manifold was quite under the GTR strut brace.  The new manifold is quite [unknown] the GTR strut brace. The GTR strut brace was needed to clear the bonnet vents. The Old strut brace will almost certainly clear the new manifold, but not the bonnet vents. The old strut brace will almost certainly clear the new manifold, and the new bonnet without vents. But I am hoping the GTR strut brace clears the new manifold :p
    • On the bright side, at least you knew that it happened and remedied before anything happened. A friend of mine just took his Fiat 124 to a shop for an oil change and they didn't tighten the oil filter housing properly. 4.5 quarts spewed out and even after refilling + tightening the cap the engine has a tick now.
    • So, more pain. The FAST manifold is a little larger than the stocker. This is problematic because there really wasn't much clearance to begin with, so going from 'barely enough' well into 'no' is sad based on the external dimensions of the thing, even though where it bolts to the head is the same. Result is the fuel rails sit a good 25mm higher, and this is a bit of an issue with the wiring that runs behind the motor, and the fuel lines, and everything else. When pushing the manifold on, it required a huge amount of force to crush wiring looms to fit it, sensors like the MAP sensor are about 1mm from the firewall, and the FPR just has to bend ABS lines to be forced into place. After some brainstorming and some sad drinking, the loom for some reason ran from the grommet behind the ABS sensor, then to the driver side head, then back to the passenger side head. So all of this was pulled back and stripped, a few wires cut and rejoined, so that the 'branch' was now on the passenger side's head as below: Before you basically couldn't see anything behind the driver head. This is much improved! The MAP sensor is now pointing up (instead of at the firewall) Brackets have been made up for the rail. The rails are for a LS1, the manifold is designed around a LS2 as it's base. Which of course has slightly different bracketry and water pump clearance, hence the mods people need to do. Should be hopefully mounted tonight. I spent money on a new FPR that is slightly more compact than my Turbosmart FPR1200. The gauge has also been moved to the rail. There's also apparently an ORB to AN Union instead of the adapter, because the ~25mm of the current adapter is going to make the difference. Provided this all goes together and arrives today, it'll be the totally not stressful attempt to start it.
    • This seems like a pointless exercise. There is no E30 availability. Ongoing availability of E85 should not be assumed. Flex-fuel is the only sensible approach, so you can use E85 when and where you can get it, 98 when that's al you can get, and anything in between as you fill it up and drain it down. And if that means replacing the pumps, fitting a flex capable sensor/ECU/whatever has to be done to these Renault shitboxen, then.....so be it?
