never raced my 33gtst, doubt i will.

but i always thought that a SS would beat a 33 gtst on the straight?? both stock

correct me if im wrong.

According to Motor Magazine

Holden VE Commodore SS-V 0-400 in 13.9 seconds

Holden VZ Commodore SS 0-400 in 14.21 seconds

So stock vs stock, the newer SSs are indeed faster than the R33 GTST

I once rode in a LS1 Calais (225kw at fly) and it felt fast, surprisingly so, definitely effortless when compared to my r33. All that torque.

As with most turbo skylines you really need to wind them up in order to get going and can feel quite slow off boost.

Just to qualify my original post, I don't intend on buying one, just being open minded about a model that I have up until now written off.

And skylines use cast iron blocks like that found in 1950's american cars as well. So what are you trying to say? That MacPhearson stuts are bad, they seem to do pretty well on lots of cars.

seeing I brought it up.....I have no problem with it, I drive a HR31 as a weekender, it has macPhearson strust also.........so whats ur point? The point of trying to start an argument is it? ;)

if we want to compare stock for stock the flagship holden gts to nissans flagship car with an engine developed almost 20 years ago... i pitty your soul, as you will now burn in hell for making baby jesus cry, the new skyline gtr is being released this year with a vq35dett and full attessa.

ward top10 engine's something ran every year, which the 6L ls2 does not rate a mention.

Okay lets compared a HSV to a 350Z (the flagship of the Nissan sports car range right now)

Price

HSV Clubsport R8 - $63,000

Nissan 350Z - $63,000

0-400

Nissan 350Z - 14.37s

HSV Clubsport R8 - 14.01s

No track times but I'm sure the R8 would be faster.

Of course the new GTR will be faster than any HSV or Holden but its a totally different range of car.

How can you be sure?

The last R8 was quicker than the 350Z in a straight line, and slower on the track. The 350Z lacks enough straight line urge, but it handles pretty well and can carry a high cornering speed.

That said, 14 flat seems a bit slow for the VE HSV; I thought the SS runs in the 13's.

I wouldn't mind seeing how a HSV R8 stacks up against a Nismo 350Z S-Tune. HSV being the "sporty tuner" arm of Holden these days, in terms of ethos I wouldn't mind seeing how it lines up against Nissan's. The S-Tune doesn't make that much more power than the standard 350Z, but it does cop some brake and suspension upgrades.

How can you be sure?

They are for VZs so I can't be 100% sure of course.

still give me a ford anyday. if i had to buy australian made rwd.

holden have already broken there government agreement, they said they would never go over 300kw.... huh

atleast ford stayed honest with that one, and as if ford couldnt make the power, they just choose not to.

Ah. The DTS, which runs on R-Comps. Quite impressed with the SS' time though. 2 seconds is normally the kind of advantage you'd expect on semi slicks alone, let alone before all the handling and powertrain mods that a Clubsport gets.

My mate has a 350Z that's got swaybars, catback, ECU and R-Comps (maybe pads too) and he runs 1:10. Those mods are little different to what HSV does to a standard Commodore SS, and he's not a pro driver.

That said, the VE should be heaps quicker. A "properly" new platform, and more power. Mind you, I wouldn't mind seeing an E series car line up against the new 380RS.

Although I'm not a hate Commos with passion, its hard to get a car that transports 5 people in comfort and has decent grunt for a decent price. Sure the BMWs etc are better but do you guys realise the ridiculous price tag of those cars with an equivalent motor? I hope the build quality is better in the latest Commos. When I compare my olds 5 year old BMW 5 series to a mates VX Commodore, the Holden is basically falling to bits both mechanically and cosmetically.

Also I find it hard to swallow that your *base* model Commodore is like $35k. Thats huge money for a bread and butter car.

Also hands up for those who reckon the "track stripes" on the new VE is totally ridiculous?

Sure the VE Commonodore is a nice car. My Skyline was a nice car 10 years ago. It still is and has taken GM and FORD 10-15 years to catch up. Now we are comparing a brand new engine with a 20 year old cast iron block design. And which engine is nicer may I ask? :)

I had a drive of a VZ Alloytech executive and it was the shittest car/engine I have ever driven. It felt like it was made in china and performed like a moist towelette. Each to his own. My old man has a really nice 80 series landcruiser with a modified 1HZ diesel that is a great economical truck to cruise in (uses less diesel than my GTS uses fuel) + u can fit 8 passengers not 5 and take them anywhere :D

Hand up! Bunch of wannabe's lol.

But the "base" commo is excelent value. Try and find any other new car in the world with the same kind of specs for that price.

You have to go a european car for the same kind of think. And then you are looking at 70 g's for a base spec merc of beemer.

er, Falcon, 380, Camry?

The Commodore is only as good as those cars.. never forget that.

No review I've read has really said the VE is that far ahead of any of those cars, even despite being the latest.

I would say on the contry most wheels and motor mags rate the commodore higher espicially in terms of build quality, and plastics. In terms of dynamics they say they are excelent but the falcon is pretty good as well.

i think that ad is for HSV GTS not for the Commwhore SS........and you got to admit the new GTS with the magna ride suspension and 300 KW for 75K, is pretty good value for money compared to any V8 BMW, V8 Merc.....

Probably give the M5 or E55 a run for theire money..... :glare:

Personally will never own one thought.......way TOO big

i bet u the bmw's, and merc's will keep their value much better than a commodore. Plus they wont break down that often. Its not that hard to make a fast car, but to make it last is a different story
