Tensioner Spring

Hi can someone please explain what the tensioner spring actually does? Is it neccessary to replace the spring when you replace the tensioner bearing?

The spring pushes the tensioner into the belt harder... so it takes up the slack.

Unlikely that you'd need to replace it. On the V6 commodores it's quite handy to take the fan/AC/alternator belt off without undoing anything. ;o)

From memory its just to serve as an auto adjustor before you lock it. Dont bother replacing it, but make sure you replace the stud and bolt that secure both the idler and tensioner bearings.
